It tends to grow in particular after a Windows update. After the usual clean up of system files for the native boot OS I boot to the PC's main OS, mount the vhdx, then defragment it. After that I can compact it using Diskpart. Here I have shrunk this dynamic vhdx from 36GB to 28GB, that's about the size of the used space in this vhdx.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

Re R-Drive Image, i have it as a backup (excuse the pun) to Macrium Reflect, it takes a daily full backup.
It's a simple to use, no fuss and reliable back up program.
If Macrium V8 ever becomes redundant i will happily keep using R-Drive.

This morning R-Drive took 6 mins to do C Drive a backup - 33.1 GB.
The last Macrium Image took 4 mins 2 days ago of C Drive - 35.4 GB

I don’t get the obsession in here with backup times. You can continue working through a backup.
Some people commenting seem to use their computers for nothing but testing backup software… so what’s to backup? 😄

Any number of times I've neglected to make my nightly two images until just before shutting down for the night. If that's the case, waiting for the two images to be made can make an irritating dent in my sleeping time! :weary::sleepy:

So it’s important to you to check that it’s completed successfully? I get that.
Can you not predict a time you’ll be shutting down and start the backup prior?

The comment was more an observation of unrelated posts in other threads.

For your edification:

I follow the widely embraced 3-2-1 backup strategy.

3 copies of my data
2 different backup technologies
1 copy must always be offsite

I'm self-employed, work from home, and my data is vitally important to me.

Every evening I make two Macrium Reflect images on two 4TB Samsung Portable SSD's each containing 7 rotating daily images. The SSD's are only connected for the short time it takes to make an image which is currently averaging only 5 minutes. I make the images while I am working in the evening.

I work entirely from my local 1 Terabyte C: Drive and all my data and photos are kept in my OneDrive folder. I'm a Microsoft 365 subscriber which includes 1 Terabyte of OneDrive cloud storage. I have OneDrive set to mirror my local OneDrive folder, thus I always have all my work backed up throughout the day in real-time as I work. This is very important to me. I don't ever want to lose anything I'm working on.

That's it. 3-2-1. Three separate copies of my data using Two different technologies. One copy is always offsite in cloud OneDrive and updated in real-time.

I’ve read your formula many times. A man after my own backed up heart.

I simply have 6 external and 4 internal drives dedicated to backups and default user folder locations, SSD and HDD’s I have backups for backups.

Although I do backup using software, at worst, I’d have to reinstall Windows. Everything else is more than secure.

Unless one of your data backups is always offsite, your backup strategy is not "more than secure".

I have a hub with 3 500GB SSD’s. It gets unplugged or switched off every time I backup or when retiring. Easily accessed as it’s next to my keyboard. That’s as off site as I’ll ever get.

No. They aren’t fire proof, but they are theft proof. You’d have to see me to know why. And this house couldn’t be entered with a Blowtorch and Bulldozer. I rarely (and I mean rarely) leave the house and If I do, my son is here. He’s twice as big as I am.
I also work from home but mostly what I do is made possible by being online.

Understood. My home is protected by Smith & Wesson and I'm a dead shot at the practice range. Seriously, if your data is important to you, at least consider keeping a spare backup SSD in the car and/or a bank box. BTW, all my SSD drives are protected by BitLocker, just in case they were to be lost or stolen.

I had a leaver action 30-30. I gave it up when Australia did an amnesty for guns in 1996 and asked that all guns be submitted to the Govt.. I also gave them a sawn off shotgun, an automatic shotgun and 2 double barrels. A 22, a 303 WWII etc

You’re right. I could take better care. I have been toying with the idea of OneDrive. I’ve read many of your posts. They are, if nothing else, convincing, Gary.

But as for Backup software like Macrium. I did start paying a subscription last year but canceled it over Hasleo.

Another idea I was going to investigate. I have a couple of servers, one in the United States and one in Sydney, Australia. I was going to look into a program that could auto copy Hasleo/other backups to the server/s. I could do it manually via FTP… pretty fast really.

I feel as if I’m being schooled lol

As for OneDrive, I was curious whether Microsoft has a data center in Australia. Copilot says that Microsoft has several data centers in Australia. They currently operate data centers in Sydney, Melbourne, and Canberra. Microsoft has announced plans to expand their data center footprints in Australia, increasing the number of sites from 20 to 29 over the next two years.

For me the real value of OneDrive is that it is a real-time mirror of everything that I'm doing with my data and photos in real-time. I can't lose anything I'm working on at any time throughout the day.
