Hard to say since wouldn't a install over an existing install fix that problem. Maybe it is something added to the registry that only a uninstall would delete. It would be more interesting if one could see the logs of what it complains about.

I had a search for Messenger Plus registry entries, but there aren't many.
I'm glad your issue is fixed. It's much better than the official Messenger.

I couldn't even uninstall the official Messenger properly. There are two entries, and one wouldn't uninstall.
I probably could have used Revo Uninstaller to uninstall it completely, but I just restored a system image.

I actually have not used Messenger Plus yet but it seems like almost 2 months ago, someone sent me a message and basically in the official messenger which I was using with the app version before it became a edge browser app showed:


and what is interesting is the security was upgraded before that January 19, 2025 9:42PM GMT -7 message that wasn't shown. Messenger Plus shows the message without the issue. Messenger.com, Facebook.com in the browser also shows the content correctly but the official Messenger app does not as the above is what it still shows like right now. I was trying to see how Messenger Plus compares to the official app in notifications but unfortunately as the author said, only one thing is supposed to show the notifications bubble and the # of unread new messages whether that is messenger.com, Messenger Plus or the Official Messenger app.

As for uninstalling, I have not tried it but this is what Apps -> Installed app in Windows Settings looks like for me:


The first one with the circular icon is the official edge app,
the second one is probably the browser app in chrome,
the third one is the official app that was in use before the current official edge app was used,
the fourth one appears to be another version of the second one

So the 2nd and 4th one, I am not sure if I want to keep them or delete them. Messenger Plus can be uninstalled without messing up the security messages because it's just redirecting the messenger.com part in whatever browser one uses but the official app, if one uninstalls them, no one knows what other client would store the keys for that session of the messenger messages.

Windows Messenger users have been left with a mess. Older computers have more remnants.

I just tried One Messenger and the January 19, 2025 message shows so maybe the official Messenger app also needs a uninstall/reinstall and the problem will be fixed.

There are two official Messenger PWA listings for a reason. The one that shows the file size is the original install but when you uninstall that, the data does not get erased. The other one will ask if you want to uninstall app data in Microsoft Edge or not as I did the install twice within the last 10 minutes. I uninstalled the first, second, and fourth. The second one did prompt and asked about the data but I did not answer it as the prompt disappeared so it's the same as saying no. So I launched the previous official app and it says to upgrade which goes to the store and I installed, it loaded just like normal with all the conversations and not prompting for the PIN for security messages and ofcourse the January 19, 2025 message had the same problem. So this time, I uninstalled the official PWA messenger app and then the 2nd entry which has a icon similar to what's below and I answered to delete the data but what is interesting is it also removed the third one above, the previous official app and then I went to Microsoft Store and install Messenger after searching for it. Messenger started up with Continue as my real name which I clicked and then it loaded the conversations and also asked for the PIN for security messages and the January 19, 2025 message now shows up correctly just like Messenger Plus, facebook.com in the browser, messenger.com, One Messenger.


But that icon for the 2nd listing sure changed as the colors of the Messenger icon is different. So it appears the Messenger data is actually stored in the Edge browser and probably why it said continue as name is because it's using the Facebook/Messenger cookies that are already in Edge itself.
