Solved Missing Windows 11 Toolbar after Windows update.

Windows always creates a restore point before installing updates.
I don't know about always. System Restore needs to be turned on and have enough disk space allotted for it. Because I have had it fail me more times then not, I keep it off.

Your prompt for "ms settings" inevitably leads people to lean towards compatibility issues caused by certain theme like tools after updates.

Plan for recovery of 'Lost Taskbar'.

1. A fresh switch on of PC and Login (Not Administrator).
2. Exit (not uninstall) from ZoneAlarm Next Generation.
Not certain how I do this?
3. Ctrl+Alt+Del, select Task Manager, Run New Task.
4. Enter "rstrui.exe"
5. Choose the restore point for the date/time the Windows Update happened.
(Based on the fact that Window always does a Restore before installing updates)
Or should it be a date/time BEFORE the Windows Update date/time?
6. Follow the restore and reboot.
7. If this fails to solve the problem STOP THIS PLAN and update this thread.
8. Check Windows updates and action the ones mentioned early with reboots in between.
9. Carry on with my life doing the things I would rather do than fixing my PC.

Useful Information from this Thread (for me).
U1. Never install a Preview Windows Update.
Not certain how to ignore these, yet action another update which comes after?
U2. How to access the Administrator Login.
U3. Not all system problems solved by SFC and DISM.

I WILL WAIT FOR SOME COMMENTS BEFORE GOING AHEAD.

Unfortunately, no . It sometimes doesn't work as it should and I've seen members
having to do a inplace upgrade to repair what was broken.
Windows always creates a restore point before installing updates. Choose the one that
was created before this update.

OK, so, I'll try my best to explain how I would explain it to a novice (no disrespect intended)
To get to the Restore app go to Settings , System (left side) , scroll down to bottom and click
on About. In the next page you will see System Protection.
First, make sure the Restore app is turned on (It is Off by default)
Turn on if not by choosing (clicking on the C:// drive in screen shot below)
On same popup, click on Configure. A new popup will appear. click on radio button to turn On.
On the bottom of the same popup, adjust the slider to allocate enough space for at least 4 Restore Points.
This is mine: I have a 2TB C: drive for the OS

1709469713755.jpeg

Now, to address your other concerns.
To Exit or Quit your 3rd party security, you should have a icon in the overflow on the taskbar but since the taskbar
is missing, open Task Manager by clicking on CTL / ALT / Delete and choosing Task Manager.
Now, locate the process for your security and right click to end Task.
3. Ctrl+Alt+Del, select Task Manager, Click on (top of app) Run New Task.
4. Enter "rstrui.exe"
That will work since Task Manager is already up and running.

As for never install Preview Updates well, you have to download these as they are not
automatically installed: Simply click on the X to have it disappear.

I have last updated this notebook for the February updates on the 26 of this month. I always Pause the updates
for at least three weeks. This is how I do it but, others are faster than me.
The updates made on that date also has a Restore point created before the updates are installed by Windows.
I suggest you use that one for your restoration point.

I'm sorry, but I am still confused by your example, and would like to thoroughly understand how the system works.
You've highlighted the 2 windows updates in red box as they would have actioned one after the other.
The red arrow points (which restore point to pick) to the later of the two, when I would have thought it should be the earlier of the two if there was a problem after the second one finished.
I'm also not certain why you had the blue arrow there at all.
Apologies if this seems pedantic to you, but I do not want to restore back further than I have to, and make sure that I get this right.

If no one has mentioned it... Ctrl + Esc ...will open the Start Menu.
Correct - No one has mentioned it in this thread.
But - When I do it with my missing TaskBar, the screen goes blank and then returns to the same as before.

Plan for recovery of 'Lost Taskbar'.

1. A fresh switch on of PC and Login (Not Administrator).
2. Ctrl+Alt+Del, select Task Manager.
3. Exit from ZoneAlarm Next Generation, right click and end tasks on 3 entries “ZoneAlarm*”.
4. Choose ‘Run New Task’ and enter "rstrui.exe"
5. Choose the restore point for the date/time the Windows Update happened.
(Based on the fact that Window always does a Restore before installing updates)
6. Follow the restore and reboot.
7. If this fails to solve the problem STOP THIS PLAN and update this thread.
8. Check Windows updates & action those mentioned early with reboots in between.
9. Carry on with my life doing the things I would rather do than fixing my PC.

Useful Information from this Thread (for me).
U1. Never install a ‘Preview Windows Update’.
U2. Delete a ‘Preview Windows Update’ and they will not appear again.
U3. How to access the Administrator Login.
From the Command Line:- “net user administrator /active:yes”.
Swap “yes” to “no” to revert.
U4. Not all system problems solved by SFC and DISM.

I WILL IMPLEMENT THIS PLAN SOON and let you know what happens.

If worse comes to worst, you can always do a Repair Install with an In-Place Upgrade...

An In-Place Upgrade "compares" what is installed on the computer, with the Windows ISO image.
Then, it overwrites any corrupted Windows files, with clean copies from the ISO image.
This is how it "repairs" Windows while allowing you to keep your programs and personal files.

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

DISABLE non-Microsoft:
a) antivirus software
b) firewall software
c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect or AOMEI Backupper Standard
Making a backup is optional, but always a smart move.
Macrium Reflect
AOMEI Backupper Standard (free)

Get the Windows 11 ISO (Option #2), and save it to your desktop...

Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will "look" like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations.
Your drivers, programs and data will be intact.

=====================================================================

It takes about 40 minutes on my computer.
The In-Place upgrade is like SFC and DISM/Restore Health, with... super powers. :-)

OK, now that I have finished eating my Caribou sausage with Maple syrup and Goat cheese, I am
now fueled up enough to try and help further.;-)

I should have been more explicit in my example. As you can see from the blue arrow, it is a much later
date than the others in the red box. That's Windows creating a restore point on a schedule. It does
this before installing well... read it hear: it might be better explained

Yes, you should restore with the earliest possible restore point But, the one that is closest to the actual
Windows update. Meaning, if the update occurred on the 2nd of march then use the closest one to that
date.
No apologies needed.

IF in this case, a backup of this OS then, that would be counter productive as it is broken.
If at all possible, the Recovery of the OEM or original DVD might be a better solution.
