Hi. For some reason my screen keeps flipping. It should be on Landscape. But over the last 4 months that I've had the laptop it's flipped 4 times. Sometimes it's to Portrait Flipped, sometimes to Landscape Flipped. I change it back to Landscape, but I'd like to have it stay permanently there. It's used by my 91-year-old mother and really confuses her.

I do the following to fix it: Right click on desktop>Display Settings>Display Orientation

Thx.

I looked in programs and did a search and didn't see any. Is there anywhere else I should look?

A clean boot is a troubleshooting technique that allows you to get the computer up and running so that you can perform diagnostic tests to determine which elements of the normal boot process are causing problems.

Execute Sfc /scannow command from admin Command Prompt.

Try different user account.

Actually, it is. But we have never used the touch feature so I’ve totally forgotten it exists. Thank you. I’m going to try this, too.

its not a windows issue, its screen rotation. sensor is probably being tripped inadvertently when closing the lid or barely tipping the laptop at any point.

browse to
Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Configuration

all monitors will be listed as subkeys. expand each to 3rd folder (will be named "00"). Inside each "00" key, there is a DWord on the right side named "Rotation". Set them all to desired value:

1 = Landscape
2 = Portrait
3 = Landscape (flipped)
4 = Portrait (flipped)

Restart PC to apply

Since she never closes the lid she’s probably inadvertently tipping it.

Thank you.

Ok, I made it to 00 for the five categories under Configuration. I then expanded the first: and saw Rotation. Here's what it looks like: see attachment. I'm unsure where to put the #1 so I can set each to Landscape (as shown in your post above).

you just double click it to open the DWORD and change the value. it is already set to 1 (Landscape). not sure what "five categories" you're referring to though.

These are the 5 categories I see. Each has a subkey of 00 & an option to click on Rotation and DWORD. When I clicked on DWORD in each of the five it was already on #1. Does this mean they're all already set on Landscape & if so, I'm wondering how this can prevent flipping?

ok good. its set to landscape. now that it is set to the proper orientation by default, browse to:

Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AutoRotation

inside of "AutoRotation" in the right-hand pane, right click an empty area and create a new > DWORD (32-bit) and name it
Code:
Enable
double click "Enable" DWORD and set the value to 0
reboot pc

I made it all the way through. I created a new DWORD (32-bit) and then clicked on Enable. Now my new DWORD (32-bit) shows a value of 0. Is this correct?

yep. that looks correct. after a reboot, Screen Rotation should now be disabled, which (because of the Orientation registry edits you made earlier) will keep it locked in the orientation that you wanted
