Need to upgrade wife's PC to allow Windows 11

I'm curious. Has anyone ever had a significant issue with 11 installed on unsupported hardware?

I recall claims of a performance loss if Core Isolation is enabled on some older systems, but its use is not mandatory.

I admit that I don't understand the security issues.

As long as the user has SSD, the hardware does not matter, it will run just fine, even on a calculator.

Windows 11 is pretty secure by default, even with every security feature disabled, Defender included.
Security might be a concern for enterprise users with Bitlocker and such, but easily fixed using 3rd party.

Don't think that someone from Microsoft oversees the Microsoft support forum? An independent advisors is not going to say anything that Microsoft doesn't allow. That is also true on this forum. That is what moderators are for.

I seem to recall some bona fide MS employees quoted as hinting that installs on unsupported hardware might not receive updates in the future.

As far as I know, that was mostly sowing FUD. Unsupported machines have been receiving updates, without additional hacking.

I'm not current on the 24H2 issue, though. I haven't paid much attention, as the hardware it affects is old. Much older than the newest hardware that wasn't blessed for the original 11 release.

I'm using it on this unit whilst I type. Win 11 is not officially supported on this 6th. gen Intel processor chip. Yes, I am having some issues. Turbo boost refuses to work but my CPU is overclocked anyway so I'm already running at .8 GHz more than what the chip does out of the box. I use Kaspersky for security and that end of things seems to work just fine.

Lest someone say that my O.C. is unstable I have tried this at stock clock speeds and I have issues with Paint, IRST, TBT3, and various sorts of software. Apart from this most web pages such as this forum work fine. Fortunately I'm not chained to just one OS on this rig. Windows 7 still works well. One of my pet peeves about Win 11 is that they removed computer management from the Computer icon. How dumb is that? Now I have to go to my start up menu to access it or use some other method. Anyone know the key command?

To be fair the one thing I do like about Win 11 is that I rarely ever get BSOD errors so there is a silver lining here. I also have Win 11 on my laptop where the hardware is supported. I don't use Core Isolation on any of my devices so I really can't say much about that.

Microsoft only said that computers with unsupported hardware might not get updates some time in the future.

On the TenForums there is a thread about "Windows 10 on unsupported hardware". That was very active for the first few years after Windows 10 was released in 2015. I think it around 2019 when people started posting that their old unsupported hardware stopped getting semi-yearly updates to Windows 10. Some people that had to do a clean install of Windows 10 on an old computer had to get the ISO for Windows 10 before about 2019 in order to get it to install.

Just like Windows 10 there may come a time when some people with Windows 11 on unsupported hardware may stop getting feature updates. Windows 11 has been out for less than 3 years so we may still have time before that happens.

BTW, I have an old laptop that was bought in mid 2006 and came with Windows XP Tablet Edition. It currently has Windows 10 22H2 on it. It seems to be getting some updates even though occasionally some fail. I guess that I am just lucky that Windows 10 works at all.

Computer Management can still be accessed by right-clicking on This PC. Like many other functions it is not on the default list. This is true with many other dialogs in Windows 11. Many people have complained about this.

To get to Computer Management:

Right-click on This PC

Select Show more options

Select Manage

I suppose I should have been more specific. I did know about the "show more options" method, but why? Why, the extra digging for something that used to be so readily accessible in the appropriate designation? Computer is well, Computer. The "manage" option should be readily accessible just as it always was and making one dig deeper for something so directly related to the "computer" icon is no convenience at all. No, it is annoying. I may as well access Computer from the start menu if that should be the case and sadly that is precisely the case. This is hardly an improvement, rather it is an extra annoyance IMO.

The point of adding this comment is to highlight the problem I frequently find and that is that ways of doing the same thing frequently change While I rely on you guys for help, I also do try and help myself by Googling for answers. What I find is that often the steps recommended, although supposedly for my version of Windows and the app in question, frequently are no longer available. I can usually find my ways round this, and if I can't there is always this great forum, but why keep changing things?

Thank you, that explains it. I prefer my personalised home screen - photos I have taken over the decades! They change every minute and serve as a constant reminder of all the places we have visited. A bit more interesting than the Window's ones.

However my point re frequent alterations to ways of doing things still stands!

And I still plan on buying my wife a new computer for Christmas!

My old present W10 machine, non W11 compatible, machine will be placed on a shelf next to the old W7 machine. I am on the verge of 84, will replace it with a mini PC with W11 pro [maybe W12] on it, most likely in early 2025. Will be able to use same monitors, mouse, KB etc. My W11 machine uses a 43" TV for monitor, makes things easy to see.

Desktop "personalization" has been around for decades. Under certain circumstances I can see the practicality for it. More recently a legitimate licensed version of Windows is required to access this option.

@Sigurd I am so with you on this. I am a "if it ain't broke don't fix it" kind of fellow. Admittedly, I did not mind the change in nomenclature from 'My Computer' to 'This PC' as this move reflected a more accurate description; but then they had to make me dig for something so basic as computer management via that particular icon that it was quicker for me to access Management from the start menu instead. IMO that's not an improvement — that's an inconvenience. There is nothing practical about this change. Originally I could manage my drives or my devices separately from a drop down menu simply by clicking on that icon and now I have to dig for it. How annoying.

Remember to run those old girls from time-to-time for old time's sake. Give them some practical offline work if you can or, if you have no use for them fix them up for your grand kids or for someone less fortunate who could use a computer. I find the use of a KVM switch to be a very handy thing indeed. I'm hard core anti-obsoletion. My Win 7 runs fine on this Win7/11 unit and Kaspersky does an excellent job of providing the security I need. Apart from this I have not forgotten that there's always LINUX.

NO! ??? The biggest Security Issue with MS Windows, is MS!!! When they deliberately put spyware into their OS's, then THEY are the security problem.

The way that I secure any copy of Windows, is to first make sure that all things like Cortana and WUDO are permanently disabled.
Then I permanently disable Auto Updates. Then I might install a few Performance Tweaks, and do some custom tuning, just like on my car.
From there on, it's smooth sailing. No freezes or BSOD's, , , EVER!!!
Then I come to a forum, (this one or some other one) and read all the myriad assortment of problems people are having after getting an MS UPdate. Arggg!

There are other reputable companies, producing Windows clones, minus all the MS BS, but just mentioning them (here) can get you in trouble.
Carol Shelby made a Modified version of the Ford Mustang, and I don't think he ever got in trouble for it. Eh?

Seems like a great way to go. I've always found that with a second physical computer, it gives you time to get used to the new, make sure that you have things in both places and it gives you a backup method if one of those computers starts to act up for any reason.

Also, over time I think we all use our computers differently, so a new machine is a clean slate. You can organize and setup the way you want. You don't have years of cruft and applications still on the machine you don't use. You have newer and faster components. And you would expect a longer lifespan with new equipment versus older equipment that could fail at any point.

Hope she enjoys her new setup.
