New HP Desktop w/ Windows 11 Pro, Displayports not working

I just received my new machine, HP Desktop w/ i9-12900, Intel UHD Graphics 770, Windows 11 Pro. At first I thought I had another dud like the Dell (see thread Questions on SSD problem), but it turned out it was the Displayport not working (black screen) and thankfully, HDMI does work. It has dual Displayports and I do eventually want to run dual monitors, so want to Displayports operational. The seller offered some troubleshooting ideas, but so far nothing has worked.
I have updated Windows 11 with all available updates, checked for latest graphics driver for the UHD graphics (it has the recommended driver). No joy. I came across a thread where someone was able to run one monitor HDMI and the other Displayport and then DP would work. I tried that here, no dice (I did also go into 'display' and manually tried to detect 2nd monitor and machine does not see it).

It seems like the kind of thing that is not a hardware issue. Any ideas what to try?

I'm not clear on why you think it's not a hardware issue. If I had just received a new PC and all of its ports were not working right out of the box, I'd return the darned thing.

Mike, the first thing I do after I boot a new PC is plug something I know to be good into each of its ports. Every port on the machine should work OOB.

If you only have the single discrete onboard UHD intel 770 GPU without an additional GPU (ie Nvidia), you can only output from a single port at a time.
Of course you could get a HDMI splitter, but that would only duplicate the video display source.

If you don’t want to buy a GPU, research docking stations/display hubs. HP sells a good one but very expensive, not that it has to be a HP, there are many. But I’d sooner buy a GPU than pay what HP charges.

Ok, I thought since it had dual DP ports it would support 2 monitors. I have no additional graphics card. I guess it was wishful thinking on it not being a hardware issue…. I’m really having poor luck with a new PC. You’re right. I should just return it.

I have dual DP ports on both my office Lenovo desktops, and one monitor running from each of them. No es problemo.

I have to disagree that Intel integrated graphics will run only one monitor. As a norm I run only one monitor with Intel graphics UHD 630, which is equipped with two DisplayPort 1.4 ports. But I have connected and run 2 monitors in the past, one using DP to DP cable, the other DP to HDMI cable.

According to this spec sheet the Intel i9-12900 has 3 outputs-

Did you verify your settings in Intel Graphics Control Panel per the second Intel article I referred you to? You're not using any cable adapters are you?
The computer should have HP Support Assistant installed. Run it to see if there are any drivers or bios updates.

I would start by using the process of elimination
You know the port you've been using all along with your main monitor is good, as is the cable. Move your main monitor to the other port using the same cable. Does it work?
If not, the port is bad. Return the computer for replacement.
If it works continue.
Replace the main monitor with the secondary monitor using same cable and port You've used all along. Does that monitor work? If so, that proves the second monitor is good.
Connect only the second monitor to second port using its own cable. If it doesn't work, the cable you are using with the second monitor is bad. You can verify that by using the cable connected to the second port with the second monitor.

I'm a little confused.

The spec for the XPS 8960 indicates that it has one DisplayPort connector (using the integrated GPU). It also shows a discrete graphics card with 3 DisplayPorts and one HDMI.

"Mike C555" should probably be using only the ports on the discrete graphics card. I wonder what card it is? The manual lists many possible cards, both AMD and nVidia.

Please run the HP UEFI Hardware diagnostics overnight while sleeping > take pictures > post images displaying the tests performed with results

The computer likely has a factory default version.

Download and install the most up to date version:

Power on the computer and repetitively click F2 or F10 > system > extensive > loop until error > the next day if it has made 2 or more loops > click esc > take pictures > post images displaying the tests performed with results

I think we'd be jumping the gun to suggest anything until he PROVES he's got 2 good monitors and 2 good cables. The only way to do that is process of elimination using his known one good DP port. I've learned to always start with the most common things that can cause the problem. But that's just me.

Oops, sorry.

Not only were the specs in "My Computer" rather incomplete, they were for the PC that was returned.

As you remarked above, the UHD 770 iGPU is supposed to be able to support 4 displays at once. One may be eDP (embedded DP). I'm unfamiliar with it, but it sounds like something that may not be of use with an external monitor.

I went the extra mile and got in touch with HP support (almost 2 hours). Tried new firmware, updated BIOS, etc. The Tech finally agreed it was a hardware problem. The cables and monitors used for testing were proven to work on another system. It's time to ship another one back for refund...
Can anyone suggest a good place to buy a similar machine? A place that maybe tests it before it goes out the door? BestBuy is the only brick & mortar store near me and I'm not too impressed with them...

I'm tempted to try it, but just don't have the time right now. I decided to buy direct from HP. This machine seems pretty decent at around the same price as the previous returned machines.
HP Envy Desktop TE01-5100t, i7-14700F, 32 GB DDR4 ram, 1 TB SSD, NVidia 4060 graphics card.

That’s how I got my last HP.

I wonder if you could add a note to the purchase, or call someone and explain your disappointment and ask them to check it out pre shipment. The thing is, if they do, they have a guarantee that it was working before shipment. Not sure I’d want to do that.
