New Version of ExplorerPatcher

Two programs that "interfere" with explorer.exe in there own ways. Doomed to fail if you ask me like with other programs like openshell, windowblinds, elevenclock etc.
I have had zero problems running Open-Shell 4.4.170 on top of ExplorerPatcher. There used to be a time when @valinet himself was recommending (in the official documentation on GitHub) to use Open-Shell on top of ExplorerPatcher, as back then ExplorerPatcher was causing the Windows 11 Start Menu to go missing, and there simply was no option in ExplorerPatcher that would let you get a Start Menu if ExplorerPatcher was used to bring the Windows 10 taskbar back on Windows 11. (Even the Classic Explorer part of Open-Shell works beautifully on top of ExplorerPatcher, I use it for additional tweaks like, e.g., reducing the line height in the nav pane of File Explorer because that one can't be done by setting compact mode to enabled in File Explorer, and also to stop the little expand/collapse chevrons from fading.)

The same also applies to a program called Battery Mode. It works on top of ExplorerPatcher, and, it works even much better than Windows 11 itself actually. Another excellent example of what does work on top of ExplorerPatcher is TranslucentTB (app available from the Microsoft Store). So no. Definitely not doomed to fail. At least not all of them are, and, a small handful of them are actually even rather precious. Some people keep automatically assuming that all this extra stuff is just for looks. But the real reason why I use Open-Shell to change the color of my clock is because I need my clock to show seconds, and, the moving seconds are a constant distraction to me when the color of the font is too bright compared to the color of the background. Whereas if the background of my taskbar is too bright, then I can no longer read the clock nor can distinguish all the icons I have on my taskbar. So, the reality is that I know stuff about what works versus what doesn't work, and know it only because the computer monkeys at Microsoft have been literally FORCING me to look for workable solutions to problems that THEY create. That's the only truth.

Thanks, @OAT

I'm pretty sure that although EP works with some Insider versions, in the end, only the current version of Windows 11 is supported.
Yep I seem to remember Valinet said he would'nt support insider preview builds of Windows only the current version. So anyone expecting EP to work on insider preview version of window does so at their own risk.

Hi! Following up my previous issue about corrupted Windows 10 UWP tiles, now I'm facing the total disappearance of them after switching from W10 SM -> W11 SM -> W10 SM. This is how it looks:
Every UWP app is gone from app list (on W11 SM is fine)

Tried reinstalling EP, didn't work. Other suggestions welcome

I've got the same issue - and got there the same way: went Win 10 SM -> Win 11 SM -> Win 10 SM, and now have no UWP apps either in the "all programs" list or pinned. They show up fine in the Win 11 SM, however.

Have you had any luck finding a solution? I tried re-registering the apps via PowerShell, but that didn't seem to fix it.

I completely underrstand not supporting Insider builds but EP has been working fine up to build 25247 and it is only builds since where the problem of explorer.exe crashing and nevery getting started has become so noticable. In previous builds I sometimes had to reboot to get the system running OK but every build since explorer.exe just crashes. Whilst I can see that supporing Insider builds has an overhead, these builds potentially become a release build, in which case EP may need a fix anyway.

Tried with a clean setup with my other device: UWP apps are missing entirely on W10 SM. I think 22H2 is the culprit

And if and when one of the many Insider versions becomes general release, I'm sure @valinet will have done what's necessary.

We have to remember that valinet is only one person, working on a totally free app in his spare time for us, and who doesn't nag for donations. I'm also pretty sure there's a required source of income . . . IOW, I'd say he's spread pretty thin . . .

If EP should work on an Insider Build, I'll take it as a bonus.

I don't think you should consider to use Exporer Patcher for all future. The developer (Valinet) has said several times by now "this is it". I am just happy every time it passes another patch Tuesday and EP is still usable.

If you know approximately how EP works and especially if you also have studied the source code you know it may not be feasible to maintain it with the coming Windows releases where Explorer apparantly is changed in a major way.

EP make heavy use of existing functions and code leftovers as the opposite of re-implementing things like Start11 does. So if Microsoft removes such old functions from the existing code base you are pretty much screwed. Such is life.

Sure. I just put it at My homepage packed in a zip-file. The version is 22621.819.52.5 which I set myself to differ it from the official program.

I myself wouldn't use exe-files from someone I don't know but use it if you like. I guarantee it doesn't contain anything else apart from Valinet's own source code but then again, you don't know me.

HI Fredrik. Unfortunately your version didn't help with my windows explorer crashing. I has even removed start 11 and it still exhibit the same behavior. Removing the Tuesday patch did get back everything to work. I be skipping this update and hopefully February patch Tuesday and EP might work together again. Thanks for help.

I didn't actually think it would help either but you asked for it, so...
Good luck with everything!

Can I tag along here with a problem with UWP icons? (or should I make separate thread?)

Using the Windows 10 Start Menu, and it began with that some UWP icons where just squares.

Figured out that a change of display Scale from now 125% to something else they started showing, but changing back they disappeared again. So something is up with the cache here I believe.

I've tried some stuff, general Windows 10 Start Menu repair related, and now all UWP are gone from Start Menu.

The repair stuff I've found searching refer to a folder not found on Windows 11. "%localappdata%\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.Search_cw5n1h2txyewy".

So does anyone have any creative ways to rebuild the the summoned "Windows 10 Start Menu" och Windows 11? :-)

As you say - up until before version 22621.1105 the Win10 Start menu could be repaired by executing:

Powershell:
Get-AppXPackage | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

Not anymore so I am trying to accept using the native Win11 Start menu instead.

Thank you for the swift reply.
As mentioned, that oneliner didn't make any changes to the missing icons. Rather expected as I've got a later version than where it worked. Don't know what I expected ;-)

I had en idea to restore a default Windows 10 Start Menu Layout, %localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\ LayoutModification.xml and DefaultLayouts.xml, and go from there; rebuilding/re-initializing as in start from scratch. Could this be a plausible way?

And just a curious question, anyone know where the Microsoft.Windows.Search_cw5n1h2txyewy went? The Windows 10 Start Menu obviously cache the UWP icons but I can figure out where.
Could it be here: %localappdata%\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.StartMenuExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy ? In there I got TileCache_100, 125, 150 files.

When I messed around in there, moving the files to temp folder, restarting explorer and the StartMenuExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy I lost all UWP icons... :-) I think they all went away when I moved the StartUnifiedTileModelCache.dat...

I can't wrap my head around the Windows 11 menu and taskbar behavior, it's worthless for productivity and usage.

Brgs,

Tried with a clean setup with my other device: UWP apps are missing entirely on W10 SM. I think 22H2 is the culprit
Aargh I was afraid this might be the case. That's a massive bummer. The W11 SM is so bad it's annoying. I've tried using Stardock's Start11 but it's far less polished than the W10 one.

One other thing I hadn't yet got around to trying was to delete the StartMenuExperienceHost app (ie all content in C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.StartMenuExperienceHost*), then run sfc /scannow. But the simple file explorer delete didn't work as the files were all supposedly in use or otherwise protected so I was going to try in an elevated PowerShell window. But given @Marocco2's experience it might just be that EP can't come to our rescue with 22H2 any more.

I highly doubt it might fix. I've got an idea tho. If we can restore 21H1 files like the 10SM github repo was trying to do, there is a chance it could work (although a single sfc /scannow would restore proper dlls)

So, either 22H2 or...

I walked backward through my doings to see if maybe I did something to the system. The only thing I can think of is this, which affects anything related to UWP apps.

Have a "habit" of manually compressing large folder to save some disk space, like this:

Code:
compact.exe /C /EXE:LZX /i /s:"%1"

Where %1 is a folder as argument.
The results are amazing and you don't suffer save compression write performance degrade as the folder isn't flagged for compression, and stuff saved back are not compressed. Have a bunch of folders which I from time to time compress like this through a script.

Last compression round I did I noticed the C:\Program Files\WindowsApps was HUGE and added it to my script of folder to be compressed. Don't really remember but it could be after this the UWP icons started turning into empty squares...

In my world compressed file should be totally transparent to the system as it's managed at a lower level. But maybe not. Also checked a newly installed Windows 11 if there was any NTFS file streams info on the files, but not. Just a hunch to see if anything got lost during compression.

I've now uncompressed the WindowsApps folder and continue to see if there is a way to recreate/repair the icons. Also experimenting on a newly installed 11 22H2 to see if a can recreate the problem.

Yes, I think this was rushed out the door by a design team and I can't comprehend how something that so severely caps the possibility to work with many open apps at the same time.
Me personally have the taskbar on the left edge of the screen, a taskbar which covers the bottom of and widescreen, 38", make absolutely no sense! The other which is a "must have" is to not group rubbish together! Hovering over an icon and choosing from multiple Windows is a very bad design choice.
But using a Surface Pro 8 and to get any kind of working (for humans that is) touch interface Windows 11 is a must sadly. I would have stayed on 10 if the touch interface hadn't been so extremely bad there. Here 11 has a way more to offer in functionality and easy of use.

And... don't get me started on the cluster f-ck it is to try to manage in an enterprise environment where you want control over the end users start/launch experience... NUTS 🥜 !

Shazam!!! I've got a newly installed 11 here which I'm on my way to abuse with the compact thingy to see if the 10 menu go bonkers. I'll get back.

Just finnished the install... Editing post here. The 10 menu is just full och arrows and no way complete just after installing explorepatcher... something is really fishy here.

More edit.
After installing explorerpatcher (also tried pre-release) it looks like this:
Skärmbild 2023-01-17 220630.png
Pretty borken.

So maybe the days are numbered for a working 10 menu in 11... 😢 don't have more time to put into this right now. But we've got some more info anyway.

Just a thought, haven't had the possibility to dig on this. Wonder if this has anything to do with the DefaultLayout.xml or anything how it initializes stuff from that. And then you got the registry... HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CloudStore\Store\Cache\DefaultAccount\$de${543ce156-da48-4fde-9dd9-0202dd7ccc2d}$start.tilegrid$windows.data.curatedtilecollection.tilecollection\Current

I did a quick test. Renaming the key "Current" to "Current-borken". Logged out and in again. I get a super-default Startmenu and the UWP icons are back but empty squares. So...
Renaming/deleteing the above key I use to get customer prepped (autopilot-endpoint) machines to pick up the LayoutModification.xml for a customized Start Menu on Windows 10.

Me personally have the taskbar on the left edge of the screen, a taskbar which covers the bottom of and widescreen, 38", make absolutely no sense!
A horizontal taskbar at the bottom of the screen makes all the perfect sense in the world if you're looking at the kind of information that is naturally inclined to be structured horizontally wide. If the width of columns in a table is too narrow, textual data gets truncated, often with an ellipsis symbol character (dot dot dot) at the end to indicate that text is too long to be able to fit within the borders of the cell. Viewing, editing and writing long lines of code is yet another example of why I need (professionally) the full width of the widescreen. There can be many situations where various elements are best presented side by side such that a horizontal scrollbar has negative impacts on productivity more dominantly than vertical scrolling. I use a 55 inch 4K (3840×2160) LED TV for my primary display. My taskbar height is just 46 pixels, the Windows 10 taskbar (placed horizontally at the bottom) is the only choice. Setting my taskbar to auto hide is not even an option for me to be able to consider, the System Tray icons all need to stay visible WITHOUT exceptions as long as I am not in fullscreen mode.
The other which is a "must have" is to not group rubbish together! Hovering over an icon and choosing from multiple Windows is a very bad design choice.
My taskbar icons are set to Always combine, and, the only thing that I have pinned to my taskbar is File Explorer. I do not need to hover my mouse to bring up the preview thumbnails, just a simple left-click will do that equally fine, but I also use the Simple Window Switcher feature and the Alt + "key above Tab" key combination of it.
But using a Surface Pro 8 and to get any kind of working (for humans that is) touch interface Windows 11 is a must sadly. I would have stayed on 10 if the touch interface hadn't been so extremely bad there. Here 11 has a way more to offer in functionality and easy of use.
I use a Logitech G402 Hyperion Fury, my previous mouse was a Logitech MX518. Touch devices running on Windows are a traditional fiasco.

That's part of the reason I became an Enterprise Java software developer (EJB 2.1 specialist), as opposed to going for Microsoft .NET, almost 17 years ago.
