PC dies when idle for a few hours. Cannot boot into Windows 11


The OP has two threads going about this issue at once. See post #17 above.
ZBOOK over in BSOD has given him a pretty comprehensive list of tests to perform and he is going through and doing them now.
I'm leaving it alone for now as I don't want to confuse the issue . He has already received all of your (very good) suggestions and seems to be following through with those too. We will all know more once those tests are run, then I might weigh in.

I just had a problem with my PC this week. It struggles to boot up, and when it does everything is "molasses". One click will take for god knows how long.
First thing I did was to re-seat everything... RAM (even re-seated all 4 RAM sticks one at a time), GPU and all power connectors (and while I have everything disconnected, I replaced the CMOS battery). Nothing changed.
Flashed the BIOS. Nothing.
Updated GPU driver. Nothing
Then I disconnected my data drive and boot it up with just the OS drive and voila! It booted up in seconds. The culprit was a dying spinner data drive (it's actually dead and inaccessible) and replaced it.
And while I was in the middle of it all, I did some dusting and other minor maintenance stuffs.
Everything is good now.
Just sharing this in case any of this applies to the OP. All that is needed is patience in taking out the hardware stage by stage while doing a process of elimination.

I would have likely suspected a faulty hard drive myself if OP had not already pointed out that they were using an SSD. (Not that SSDs can't generate errors.) Another frequently overlooked issue is connections. Sometimes a connection is only partially connected and this can result in inconsistent performance. Sorry to hear about your spinner. I don't know if OP is using a spinner or not in addition to their SSD but this is certainly a worthy consideration.

The OPs system spec shows 2 spinners.

That is an easy test GARoss. If your OS is on the new NVMe then just turn off the PC, disconnect the power cables from those two spinning HDDs, and start up. Leave the PC running and see if the problem occurs again.

Doesn't matter if it is a mechanical SATA hard disk or an SSD. If either is damaged and cannot be properly detected, the computer will wait for a very long time until it finally identifies it or gives up. Replace the faulty disk. Backup any data, if possible, before you lose them forever.

Correct. It doesn't matter if the drive is defective. That much has already been determined. It's my understanding that the system drive has already been replaced however and I was just wondering if any auxiliary drives or secondary drives might be generating an issue. Evidently TVeblen was wondering the same thing.

If he has many drives, disconnect them all except the Windows drive and boot. Then shutdown, connect one more drive and boot again. If connecting any drive makes the computer wait for too long, then check its health, it might be faulty. If after connecting all drives the computer boots at normal speed, then no drive has any issue. If the computer freezes any other time I would then suspect the PSU.

I also want to mention that it is important to disconnect the power cable when testing these things. If the drive is failing with an electrical defect it will still fault if just the data cable is disconnected. Without power the data cable is off anyway, so no need to disconnect that too. (But I do so anyway!)

100% Agree. Data cable can't run with zero juice so no need. At least in theory. But... in rare cases stuff happens so probably better to disconnect both. I'm thinking you'd have to have some pretty funky wiring for a drive to cause a system failure with the power disconnected.

    I own too many laptops: A Dell touch screen with Windows 11 and 6 others (not counting the other four laptops I bought for this household.) Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.
I would also disconnect the data cable, just in case it sends some current and damage the disk. Also the computer may try to identify the disk if it detects its presence and delay boot.

    Legacy MBR installation, no TPM, no Secure Boot, no WDDM 2.0 graphics drivers, no SSE4.2, cannot get more unsupported ;) This is only my test laptop. I had installed Windows 11 here before upgrading my main PC. For my main PC I use everyday see my 2nd system specs.

I would think if that happened there's other problems going on. Perhaps a PSU issue as you mentioned earlier, or, something wrong with the port. The port needs a signal to make that handshake with the rest of the system and if there's no power to the drive there's no signal to be had. Still, it doesn't hurt to 'err on the side of caution' as they say. A good idea to make sure one knows exactly which data cable belongs to which drive. I like tagging the data cables when i do things like that just to be on the safe side.
