I've had to clean up a few clients' computers that got McAfee installed without their interaction that also contained WebAdvisor [but without McAfee at the beginning of the name], difficult to remove. One was from visiting FaceBook and another from visiting YouTube.

Both Norton and McAfee are notorious for putting tentacles everywhere and there's no good reason for their doing that.

I used to be a member of HAL PC (Houston Area League of PC Users) in the late 80s/early 90s.

When both McAfee and Norton were new, I was asked to review them. I started with a totally clean (nothing nasty) computer before installing them one at a time.

Both came up with false positives! Therefore, I've never used either one of them on any computer I own.

I quit Norton when Symantec got involved with it and started removing some programs.

Neil Rubenking at PC Magazine (if you're old enough to remember this, you're beginning to get old) wrote a small program that monitored every single change made to a computer's system during an install. I remember using it when I first installed Norton [whatever it was called back then, say 1987], and I was appalled at what Norton had the gall to do to my Windows folder and my registry. Took forty forevers to wipe the intrusion.

I remember him, got my first computer in '92 and after retiring in late '94 got a job in a computer shop and began building computers with MS-DOS 5 and Windows 3.1 so there is no more "beginning" for me, mostly a "trying to keep up".

Windows 3.1 (well, I think I started with 3.11) was SO amazing, and people like Rubenking and his colleagues at PC Mag and Windows Mag just kept making it better and better. And everything they wrote was under a Megabyte installed. When we were dealing with tiny spinners and 3.5 floppies, size really mattered.

My computer was a Hewitt-Rand and had a 120MB HDD, 1.44MB 3.5" floppy, 1.2MB 5.24" floppy and 8MB RAM. Things started getting better when I could had a parallel-port CD drive and a parallel-port Colorado Memory tape drive for backups. The tape drive had a pass-through data port for the CD.

There is a pretty big space between the Download link for Acrobat Reader; "Included with your download" that has a link to "Install McAfee Security Scan Plus" that's already checked. If you're not paying attention, you get the Reader and Mcafee!

If you click on the first Download link, you're going to get McAfee; however, if you scroll down a bit to see the whole thing, you can uncheck McAfee, then click the Download Acrobat link.

Also, there's a small app called Unchecky that is programmed to uncheck PUPs. I have it installed on all of my computers and it works pretty much as advertised and is free.

Everything you mentioned was discussed and covered before I made that post and yes, I'm fully aware of the other software that could be installed along with Adobe PDF reader.

I also mentioned that I don't use it but I just pointed it out as an option.

The question was meant to indicate why did you have to post that now.
