Okay, I am totally confused here. I got an email talking about the Windows 11 Update-- Windows 11 24H2
My question is does this automatically update by itself. Is it going to change anything, or will I lose any files etc?
It also went on to say this is mandatory now, which led me to believe something might be changed. I just recently
got used to Windows 11 and I am not even crazy about. If it were up to me I would still be using Windows XP lol.
Thanks for any help pertaining to this.

the update to Windows 11 24H2 will take place via Windows update and will install leaving all your data and files in place.
thats if your computer is compatible which it looks like it is.
to be on the safe side i would backup your data you want to keep just in case something untoward happens.

best of luck, Steve ..

2 Desktops and 1 Notebook, no issues with the 24H2 version upgrade. 2 new Notebooks, no issue with the install. But then I'm not a gamer and tend to not use many third-party add-ins as I need to see what my clients see. One thing that did surprise me on the Home editions was the automatic activation of Bitlocker drive encryption and not asking for a key nor providing one, was under the impression that was only for Pro but available if desired for Home.

I still have a desktop XP machine and the DVD to re-install it. I have a couple of magnetic mount antennas and use the case as a storage device for them. Other than that, it just collects dust. I actually find that my SubNote laptop, with Windows 3.1, to be more useful. It has several useful (to me) programs written in "C" that work great with my radios.

Everyone always expects the worse from an update. Remember in Y2K, when everyone thought that the computer world was going to collapse. Well, everyone except me. I was a Unix Administrator at the time and I saw all the talk as complete BS. All of the management staff was all over me, looking for assurances that they wouldn't lose the Solitaire app on their computers (it was good in meetings). But after a week of working in Y2K, I found out that the only thing that was not Y2K compatible was me. A week into Y2K, while at work, my appendix knocked me to the ground. Took care of that issue that evening (hospital and surgeon), but then found out that, I had "cancer of the appendix". Yes, that is a real thing, which prompted a little exploration by another surgeon. Since then, I'm cancer free. All that's left is a big scar that loops around my belly button. So maybe it was a good thing.

But I digress. Back to Windows 11. I have been using Windows 11 since December 2021. Windows 11 24H2 since December 5 of last year. And I have had five 24H2 updates since then. I have never had an issue with an update. Has MS done something that I didn't like? Absolutely. But with continued updates, most everything has been worked out. MS does learn over time.

For me, 24H2 just showed up in my update window in early December 2024. I had not read anything really bad about it, so I just installed it and rebooted. It's been working fine ever since. All of the programs that I have are still usable. Absolutely nothing had been deleted or changed. I have Cygwin64 installed, so that I still have a Unix/Linux connection and still run MS Office 2007. I also have DOSBox installed, so I can still use some old DOS programs (GWBasic). Anything that MS has installed, that I don't like (Edge), I either remove it or ignore it.

I use a Windows 10 desktop connected to my radios. I would update it to Windows 11, but it is not compatible. I'll just use it as is until the updates run out. Then I will probably replace it with a mini, with Windows 11.

IMHO, don't be afraid of progress. I have been working with computers since I graduated High School (1967) and I am always ready for the next new thing. Some people jump into the future. Others are dragged.

I do have a question about the automatic activation of Bitlocker drive encryption on Home editions. I run W11 Home and do not use Bitlocker. It was not activated during any of my updates. Is there something happening that I don't know about?
