Windows 11 24H2 re-upgrade from 23H2

Are you using a “Release Preview” Windows 11?
As mentioned, I use the "Check for update" feature to re-upgrade the 23h2 to 24h2 and apparently , it gives me the "preview version" for some reasons. Right now , the system is installing the "repair" version of 24H2, I have no idea what version I am getting until it is done.

I'm not sure how it's even possible to get 26100.1 now, all the standard ways to upgrade from 23H2 to 24H2 would have given you a much higher build than that. What did you use to do the upgrade?

Whatever, an in-place repair upgrade with an ISO from Microsoft should get you back on track. Tutorial link in post #19.
As mentioned, I use the "check for update" feature in Start -> Windows Update, it just started downloading and installing . I didn't use any ISO, etc. The first time I had 24H2 , it was all automatic, I didn't even have a choice to refuse the upgrade.

That might have been a good piece of information to tell us right from the start?

Follow Bree’s instructions. Good luck.

Sorry please ignore the followings which I posted previously, for some reasons, after deinstalled KB5055523 and restarted the system, th Windows 11 24h2 reversed back to 2600. 1

I will keep your suggestion in mind for future problems (I am sure they will happen again). I manage to get it upgraded to 24H2 26100.3775 using Start -> System -> Recovery -> Fix problems using Windows Update. This time it installs the latest version. I also got my lock screen weather back but I still not able to download / install any other KB updates (except KB5054979 and KB5055523) by clicking the Windows update -> checking for updates . It just says "you're up to date" .

I am going to uninstall KB5055523 which causes the scrolling function to disappear from the windows list for an application on the taskbar. I need that function as I open a large number of windows for some applications . Microsoft thinks this is a good revamp , I beg to differ. I do not know if removing KB5055523 will remove the "weather and such" from the lock screen yet.

Thank you for all the suggestions from everyone. I am sure that they will be useful in future "adventures" with Windows.

The problem is without pausing Windows Update, Windows will detect you're behind on the current update and re-install KB5055523 (.3775) for you.

If KB5055523 is NOT installed, it doesn’t exist in your system therefore can not be blamed for your system showing 2600.1.
This issue obviously existed before KB5055523 was applied.
KB5055523 Actually fixed the problem but you’re not happy because of Alt Tab Scrolling (I think?)
Use the keyboard arrow keys, does that work?

Removing KB5055523 reverts you from .3775 to .1. This is expected, because you didn't use an ISO image which would had a previous Monthly Update to fall back on. Download and install the March 2025 update on this PC:

1. Download these two files:
https://catalog.sf.dl.delivery.mp.m..._6cb3ffc5c4d652793dc71705248426eecdacdfd0.msu

https://catalog.sf.dl.delivery.mp.m..._6cb3ffc5c4d652793dc71705248426eecdacdfd0.msu

2. Rename the files without the "_6cb3ffc5c4d652793dc71705248426eecdacdfd" at the end.

3. Open a CMD window as Admin:
Code:
DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:\path\to\file\Windows11.0-KB5053598-x64.msu

I am trying to avoid using ctrl-alt-TAB, the number of windows is large , I have to look scroll through all the images of the windows on the screen every time I I need to find a window I need, more cumbersome than just looking a list of window titles; also I wish I had octopus tenacles to press several keys simultaneously.

Just yesterday I had to run the stand alone 24H2 repair from the Catalogue because KB5055523 would not install on my Windows 11 ready X299 board. The process of updating appeared to have disabled PTT in my system BIOS because the repair check stated that my system did not have TPM2. Yup... That again. After re-enabling TPM2 the update installed and I managed to get caught up on all the updates afterwards. Not sure if the problem here is related to TPM2 but I suppose it wouldn't hurt to check. Yes, it was a long and arduous process.

Meanwhile, on ye olde X99 board sporting 23H2, I've lost my weather on lock screen and notifications so I just disabled them. I can get them directly from my browser. I don't need the hassle and that opague notification screen jumping in front of my work every time I so much as bump my mouse gets annoying anyway. Weather is also removed from my task bar and life on this rig is so much easier now.

After a lenthy install, I get 24H2 26100.1742 (don't know why I didn't get the latest build)

Upon looking at this

It looks like it is an early build and found out about update KB5055523 (the one that initiated my nightmare) is Build 26100.3775.

I will stick with 24H2 26100.1742 for now since it also gives me back my "weather and such" widget on the lock screen. I live at a place where weather is actually the most interesting thing.

I use this link to download the Windows 24h2 ISO for x64 computer

Download Windows 11
After a lenthy install, I get 24H2 26100.1742 (don't know why I didn't get the latest build)

Microsoft only updates their ISO’s at certain periods.

If performing a “Clean Install” using a 24H2 ISO from Microsoft, by the time the install finishes, you should have the latest build which is downloaded and applied during the “Clean Install” process.

On the following page you will find a few options.

Option One

Download Latest Windows 11 64-bit ISO using Media Creation Tool

This will be for a Windows 11 Version 24H2 build 26100.2033 ISO file with install.esd.

Option Two

Download Windows 11 64-bit or ARM64 ISO Download from Microsoft

This will be for a Windows 11 Version 24H2 build 26100.1742 ISO file with install.wim.

(I believe this may have been the first ISO release of Windows 11 24H2 from Microsoft. Or perhaps the first Cumulative Update for 24H2.)

The rest of the options are not for you, if you are wanting a “Release” version of Windows 11 24H2

Correct. 26100.1742 was the build for the initial October 2024 launch of 24H2 for PCs with intel/AMD processors.
The very first public release of 24H2 in June 2024 was only for Copilot+ PCs with Snapdragon X processors.
Release Date: 6/15/2024
Version: OS Build 26100.863

Important:
Windows 11, version 24H2 is targeting Copilot+ PCs devices and devices that were previously using Windows Insider 24H2 builds.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

Removing KB5055523 reverts you from .3775 to .1. This is expected, because you didn't use an ISO image which would had a previous Monthly Update to fall back on. Download and install the March 2025 update on this PC:

1. Download these two files:
https://catalog.sf.dl.delivery.mp.m..._6cb3ffc5c4d652793dc71705248426eecdacdfd0.msu

https://catalog.sf.dl.delivery.mp.m..._6cb3ffc5c4d652793dc71705248426eecdacdfd0.msu

2. Rename the files without the "_6cb3ffc5c4d652793dc71705248426eecdacdfd" at the end.

3. Open a CMD window as Admin:
Code:
DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:\path\to\file\Windows11.0-KB5053598-x64.msu
I also used Microsoft Update Catalog to download KB5055523 as a standalone install backup. Currently , I am keeping KB5055523 update from "Check for updates" (I did use an utility to keep KB5055523 from being installed, I am still not happy with not able to scroll through the open windows list for an application , I have to use Ctrl-Alt-Esc to browse through each windows image on the desktop, more cumbersome than just looking at a list). This update also messed with settings for other applications (e.g. soundcard , redirecting output to speakers , muted volume for Sound Mixer , affecting browser sound output , etc) . I also have to re-download language packs for IME, etc.

Glad to hear that worked out for you, my fellow 7/11 friend. Sorry to learn you had additional repairs to make after ward. I merely shared what I did and also suggested it might be worth looking into. I confess, I didn't bother to run DISM but I rather doubt it would have mattered because it was Windows Update that removed the failed update and it was Windows that kept on insisting that it be repaired (or clearly I wouldn't be getting anymore updates). The repair, which also kept failing, stated that I couldn't go through with the update because my Windows 11 ready system board didn't have TPM2. BUT... The Windows "solution" to this failed update problem was to default the BIOS and this is what reset my PTT settings to turn off TPM2. Once TPM2 was re-enabled my PC took the repair without issue. Alas, despite all this I lost all my driver updates and all my restore points. Blah! CO-PILOT is back and I'm back to square one.

But, hey! 🤪 - I got my Windows Update back! lol
