Installation and Upgrade Repair Install Windows 11 with an In-place Upgrade

This tutorial will show you how to do a repair install of Windows 11 by performing an in-place upgrade without losing anything.

If you need to repair or create a new recovery partition or having problems with the Windows 11 operating system on your PC, and the usual solutions will not fix it, you can do a repair install of Windows 11 by performing an in-place upgrade without losing anything.

You will keep all accounts, apps, and personal data.

You must be signed in as an administrator to perform a repair install of Windows 11.

You will only be able to perform a repair install of Windows 11 from within Windows 11. You will not be able to perform a repair install at boot or in Safe Mode.

You will need at least 20 GB of free space on the Windows drive to perform an in-place upgrade.


When you perform a repair install (in-place upgrade), the previous version of Windows in the Windows.old folder (up to 10 days after upgrade) will automatically get replaced by the current Windows. It is recommended to create a system image first if you would like to be able to go back to current previous Windows before it gets replaced.

Option One

Repair Install Windows 11 via Windows Update


This will download and install a repair version of the OS. This operation reinstalls the OS that you have and will not remove any files, settings, or apps.

1 Open Settings (Win+I).

2 Click/tap on System on the left side, and click/tap on Recovery on the right side. (see screenshot below)

3 Click/tap on the Reinstall now button for "Fix problems using Windows Update". (see screenshot below)

4 Click/tap on OK to confirm. (see screenshot below)

5 Windows Update will now open and automatically start downloading and installing the repair version of your Windows 11. (see screenshot below)

6 When Windows Update has finished, click/tap on Restart now when prompted to perform the repair install. (see screenshot below)

7 When the repair install of Windows 11 has finished, you can dismiss the lock screen and sign in to Windows 11. (see screenshots below)

8 You will now be on your desktop in Windows 11. (see screenshot below)

Option Two

Repair Install Windows 11 using ISO or USB Installation Media


1 Disable or uninstall any 3rd party AV or security program you have installed first to prevent it from interfering with the repair install of Windows 11. You can enable or reinstall it again after Windows 11 has finished installing.

It may be required to use the removal tool from the AV program developer to fully remove it.


2 If the Windows drive is encrypted by BitLocker or Device Encryption, then you will need to either suspend or turn off Device Encryption or BitLocker for the Windows drive before doing a repair install. Once installation has finished, you can resume or turn on BitLocker or Device Encryption again.

If a device doesn't initially qualify for device encryption, but then a change is made that causes the device to qualify (for example, by turning on Secure Boot), device encryption enables BitLocker automatically as soon as it detects it.


3 Do the step below depending on how you want to install Windows 11.
  • step 4: To Repair Install Windows 11 with an ISO file
  • step 5: To Repair Install Windows 11 with USB Installation Media

The Windows 11 installation media (ISO or USB) must be the same edition, same version, and same or higher build as the currently installed Windows 11.

The Windows 11 installation media (ISO or USB) must be for the same language as your currently installed Windows 11.


4 To Repair Install Windows 11 with an ISO file

A) If you have not already, you will need to download a Windows 11 ISO file.​

B) Mount the ISO file, and go to step 6 below.​

5 To Repair Install Windows 11 with USB Installation Media

This does not have to be a bootable USB.


A) Connect and open the Windows 11 USB, and go to step 6 below. (see screenshot below)​

6 Run the setup.exe file to start Windows 11 Setup. (see screenshot below)

7 If prompted by UAC, click/tap on Yes. (see screenshot below)

8 Windows 11 Setup will now start preparing. (see screenshot below)

9 Click/tap on the Change how Setup downloads updates link. (see screenshot below)

You can check or uncheck (default) I want to help make the installation better depending on what you want. This will send setup info to Microsoft to help improve.

10 Select (dot) Not right now for "Get updates, drivers and optional features". (see screenshot below)

Choosing to "download updates, drivers and optional features" will only add unnecessary overhead during the repair install, and could cause the repair install to stall if there was an issue.

You can check for updates via Windows Update after the repair install has finished to avoid this.

11 Windows 11 Setup will now start getting things ready. (see screenshots below)

12 Click/tap on Accept for the license terms. (see screenshot below)

13 Windows 11 Setup will now check to make sure you're ready to install and have enough space. (see screenshots below)

14 Click/tap on the Change what to keep link. (see left screenshot below)

After doing step 15, click/tap on Install when ready to start the repair install of Windows 11. (see right screenshot below)

15 Select (dot) Keep personal files and apps, and click/tap on Next. (see left screenshot below)

If you only have Nothing available to select, then the installation media is not the same version or language as what you currently have installed.

When you click/tap on Next, you will go back to step 13. When you get to step 14 again, click/tap on Install when ready to start the repair install of Windows 11. (see right screenshot below)


If wanted, you can close the Windows 11 Setup window at this point to safely cancel the repair install before it starts. It will be too late after this step.

16 Windows 11 Setup will now start the repair install of Windows 11. (see screenshot below)

Your PC will restart several times. This might take a while.

17 When the repair install of Windows 11 has finished, you can dismiss the lock screen and sign in to Windows 11. (see screenshots below)

Many thanks for your tutorial. The half year old PC of my wife suddenly had great problems (very long time delays when switching off and on, each around 3-5 minutes, bit much when you are used to 15-20 secs). This happened about 2 weeks ago, probably after an update. I tried everything I could find on the web. Even a clean install which caused me to lose the Office that was installed. But that was fixed with the seller.
I was ready to bring the PC to a shop to fix when I found your tutorial. With some trepidation I followed the cookbook and used the option with a USB-flash stick.
There was one restart. This took over 6 minutes but then it came back on.
And since then the PC works perfect again. You are brilliant and I will treasure the bookmark of your link!!:-)

After a few days of proper operation of the PC I got a message that there was something in need of fixing in Windows defender. All items were ticked except something with local protection. I was vulnerable and this required a restart. I did from that screen and all the old problems came back. Switching on and off took 5-10 minutes. Presumably it was the update. So I repeated your cookbook but did not notice step 10 ( skip updates, drivers and oprional features). The repair therefore took ages and problem not solved. Only when I followed your exact instructions it went much quicker and now the PC works fine. Iplaced the contents of the USB stick in a folder on the D-drive and repaired it from there. Worked fine.

But I dread the moment that mister MS asks me to start an update again. Almost sure it will create the same problem.

Any tips?

Hello Hans, :alien:

I would recommend to keep an updated system image.

This way if an update or something messes up the system, you can quickly restore the system image and pause updates to wait and try the next update.

Sorry if this is a question whose answer is more obvious than I realize but:

I am trying to get another system back working without losing what has already been installed (apps, data, links between). My original install on that system used Kari's method of putting the user files on a different drive (in my case, C: for OS, H: for user data). Will this repair (nondestructive) install understand where things are currently located without intervention?

It will not affect them on "H", and shouldn't break the links to them.

I found out that, during Step 16, before the computer restarts itself, physically unplugging all USB cables from the computer's USB ports can (depending on hardware specifics it would seem) potentially help to prevent the in-place upgrade from failing to complete. If you forgot to unplug them and it fails to complete because of that, then it will revert the changes so you can try again after that─this time remembering to unplug. I had this happen to me twice on my laptop so far, and, the USB-unplugging was what got the in-place upgrade to finally complete itself successfully each time after all.

As did I. It took two attempts to get it right, but I got it working Memorial Day in the afternoon and have been busily reinstalling my creative content to get my studio back in working order! Thanks!

I have carried out this upgrade process a few times in the past. I tried today, three times, and each time all appears to be progressing as usual but at the end of the 'blue screen' phase when I expect the setup screens I get this:

I have not seen this before and I have carried out chkdsk, scannow and DISM processes without any improvement. Can anyone suggest what might be causing this?

If you have a 3rd party antivirus or security program installed, you may need to temporarily disable or uninstall it first. They can sometimes interfere with the install.

If the above it not an issue, you might try downloading a new ISO in case it may be corrupted.

Thanks @Brink. I should have mentioned that after the first faiure I uninstalled my AV software but no improvement, I'm afraid.

For a failed in place upgrade repair > open a new thread for troubleshooting > indicate the computer problems and plan to run scripts to collect files for troubleshooting

Alternatives are reset save files, backup files and clean install, custom install, etc.

I wonder how that works?

If they download the ISO first, then do the IPU (In-Place Upgrade)... that would be great.

If they do the IPU "while" downloading the ISO... I can see where that might be problematic.

I guess they could also run a compare, then only download what needs replaced. That seems workable.



I just worry about folks with a less than stellar internet connection, doing an IPU via Windows Update.
But I definitely like the fact that they're building the IPU into Windows. THAT is a great idea.
It will make it a whole lot easier on the "tutorial guy". :-)

They should just have a button in settings called: FIX ME :D

Exact details were not given, but I suspect it's very similar to using an ISO but within an update instead.

I just tried that option.

It first downloaded Windows 11 Insider Preview 25905.1000 (rs_prerelease) (repair version)

Note that I was already at 25905.1000 (rs_prerelease).

It also attempted to install a dozen or so Defender updates, even though I was already up to date. Those all showed "Error encountered".

The (repair version) install finished with an "Update failed" and then Windows Update was stuck in a loop of "Retry all" and "Updates failed".

Rebooting did not clear the problem. Maybe not ready for prime time. I'd stick with repairing from the ISO for now.

An additional use for an in place upgrade repair is to create a new Windows recovery partition.

For example:
a) a missing Windows recovery partition
b) a reagentc /disable that does not respond to reagentc /enable

If the repair is successful there may be reduced free space within the primary partition for the new recovery partition.
