Attached are my cheat notes on this topic. I tested all these methods a few days ago and they are all working in 24H2.

I don't mean to sound dumb but I don't see the attachment in your post. Where can I find it?

Thanks

Just wondering why Windows users insist on removing the MS account requirement - the same users likely have an Apple or Google account for their phones /tablets 🤔

MS account for MS OS isn't the same thing as having an Apple or Google account. A large part of it essentially comes down to genuine administrative privileges. You have more control over popups, advertising, security, and keeping your OS free of unwanted clutter. Not everyone wants cloud privileges. Not everyone wants Co-Pilot to inundate their apps. Not everyone wants One Drive. It's easier to get away from these sorts of things with a local account. And, should you happen to need any of them later, you can secure them with a separate account that isn't contingent on your current operating system.

I have no objection to using an MS account - I just like to start off with a local account so that all of my systems have a common account name, a common user folder name, etc. and then I configure the MS account afterward (if I intend to use one).

Also, since I have more than 10 machines, I have to use more than one MS account because Store Apps can only be installed on 10 machines using the same account (at least that is true for paid apps). But even though I have more than one MS account, ALL my machines have a common local user account making LAN connectivity easier.

I also have several machines devoted purely to testing and these have absolutely zero need of a Microsoft account. Same holds true often for my test VMs.

Just wondering why Windows users insist on removing the MS account requirement - the same users likely have an Apple or Google account for their phones /tablets 🤔
For me it's not the MS acct that is the issue. It's having to use that MS acct credentials to sign in to your system. I have my MS account on my daily driver. I need it for Office 365 and maybe a few other things. However I don't need to use it to sign in as mine is set up with a local acct.

Even on iPhones, you're not required to have an Apple ID or email account, and you would think that due to their even more closed environment that that would be a more likely place to require one.

MS has even out-done Apple in this regards.

“It’s not the customer’s job to know what they want” - Steve Jobs

IMO this is over-simplistic. Often the client knows precisely what they want and what they need. Having one's wants and needs dictated to them by some aggressive marketing scheme is tantamount to tyranny. There are precious few who are strangers to being told what their needs are when precious little could be further from the truth. This is not to say that the wants and needs of a public demographic cannot be identified and targeted, but fads will fade while needs tend to last a life time.

Personally, this is why I think a skeleton version of the Windows OS should exist. Modules could be purchased from the Microsoft Store or "Windows Store" and some of these could even be "try ons". Windows already does this with Office. By my choosing to use a local account I have more control of choosing what things I want and eliminating things I don't want.

The bypassnro command is not something all users know about much less know how to use, but the removal of such to force customers to establish their OS to the extent that they can't even operate a Windows OS without a Microsoft account is nothing short of insolent exploitation. IF Microsoft were truly interested in what their customers want they might wish to take a closer look at all the third party software out there that is so staggeringly popular. Rufus would be on that list. Surely someone in HQ is well aware of the reasons why Rufus (among others) is so popular. Anyway, that's just my take on it.

People like their options. To discourage users from installing local accounts on their PCs in this manner is a bit too heavy handed IMO.

Absolutely. The people on this thread looking at workarounds like bypassnro, are a tiny minority that wouldn't break Microsoft's bank if they didn't want to participate in Microsoft's revenue schemes. This is nothing more than a bend-over, absolute control petty move on their part.

People like their options. To discourage users from installing local accounts on their PCs in this manner is a bit too heavy handed IMO.

There are plenty of scenarios out there where you can't log into an account, especially for small businesses, say 5-20 people where they're too small to have a separate, expensive IT department. And even if that weren't the case, I still should have a choice, anyway.

I value having a local account too. But for a moment let's play 'Devil's Advocate'.

Why do MS insist that we should all sign in with an MS account (at least, for the 1st account on a new PC)?

One plausible justification for Microsoft's position on this is 'Security'. In the name of security all new installs now come with Device Encryption enabled by default, and that becomes full Bitlocker encryption once you sign in with an MS account. The average user is probably totally unaware of all this.

By insisting you use a Microsoft account MS are ensuring that you will never loose that Bitlocker key, it will be safely stored in your MS account.

You are free to create as many local accounts as you like, once set up. You can even delete that initial MS account (make sure you make another local account an administrator before doing so) and only use local accounts from now on. But you will still have that Bitlocker key recorded in your MS account if you ever need it.

Me, I think Bitlocker is overkill for a home PC. I set mine up with local accounts and my first act on signing in is to turn off device encryption ;)

Turns out, I'm averse to being told what to do.
Me too :D

To be fair, this non-feature was introduced to the beta testers of Windows Insider. Still it behooves me to ask why they even bothered. If it is limited to Windows Insider I'm fine with that. There are also reasons I don't do Windows Insider anymore, but I digress. There are some who feel that this really isn't that big a deal because there are third party programs like Rufus around to deal with the the matter. I should like to point out that when one follows the progression it becomes increasingly obvious that exploits of this nature amount to a step-by-step monopolization that is contrary to the spirit of free enterprise and liberty. TPM is one such example. Step-by-step this progression is practically one step away from completely monopolizing one's hardware so that it can only use Windows and nothing else. The boiled frog analogy applies here. I'm opposed to it. My hardware is my property. I will decide what I can or cannot install on my PC and if this means saying goodbye to Windows then so be it.
There are plenty of scenarios out there where you can't log into an account, especially for small businesses, say 5-20 people where they're too small to have a separate, expensive IT department
My wife works in an environment much like the one you describe above. They do lab testing for oil field operations. What misery Windows has already caused them is too extensive to go into here and several times I've had to step in and alleviate some of the issues that were generated by callous and heavy-handed exploits on the part of Microsoft. For security reasons I refrain from going into the details but this nonsense needs to stop. I'm not alone in this view. Are you familiar with this individual?
