Should I upgrade Win-11 with 22H2 ?

Hi,

I am getting a workstation from Dell with Win-11 for Workstation & they are going to configure everything in factory before shipping & then come to my place & install it because they say I have ordered " ProDeploy " which I didn't but it showed up later in quote. I had asked only for onsite basic installation to make sure that everything is running because last Workstation I had ordered 2 months ago didn't work despite Dell's 7 technicians & engineers worked on it online & in person for two months but couldn't make it work & finally they took it back. I am not running any business & this system is for my personal use.

But they are asking me not to get Win-11 with 22H2 update because they say it is unstable so they are advising me to go for Win-11 without 22H2.

(1) So my question is, if that is true & what kind of problems you guys are having with Update 22H2 ?
(2) Am I going to miss out on any new features in 22H2 & what they are.
(3) If I insist on Win-11 with 22H2 & if any problem whether hardware or software arises soon or in future they will blame me & say " We had warned You "

Please advise.

Far as on my system I'm not having a problem with latest updates. It is stable for me

That sounds to me like nonsense. I have a Dell XPS 9510 i9 OLED you see listed in "My Computer" below. It is running 22H2 22621.608 and I'm experiencing no problems. A new feature I really like is the newly designed Task Manager with Dark Mode as I use Task Manager a lot.

Windows 11 OS updates voiding a Dell Warranty is complete bull-

(2) Not really.
(3) Probably. They are feeding you a line of B.S. already - why would they not continue with it?

They are not saying it will Void Warranty.
They are advising me not to install 22H2. Just the Win-11 without 22H2. They say it makes the system unstable.
I don't know what that really means.
But I really would like to know if you day trade or use tick charts and what trading software or more than one do you use for charting purpose and have you had any problems with 22H2 update ?

Here's the problem. Windows by itself is fairly stable. You might get little issues, here or there, but nothing really major.

The "problems" come from companies like DELL and Microsoft, adding a lot of JUNK to the operating system.
But even that is fairly easy to deal with if you use backup software.

Rules for a happy computer...

1. Have a large amount of "storage", internal and external.
2. As soon as the Pro Deployment crew is finished... MAKE A FULL BACKUP, and the bootable rescue media.

Once you have full backups, and a way to restore them whether Windows will boot or not... everything is fine.
For a situation like "day trading", I would keep your Windows installation... small.
The smaller it is, the "faster" that you can restore from a backup.

Again... stable isn't really the issue. Backups are the holy grail in computing.

And... I don't really mean... jail. I mean... "problems".

It may not be nonsense, depending on the exact hardware in the machine being ordered.

The safest way to get 22H2 is to start with 21H2, then wait for Windows Update to offer the upgrade to 22H2. It will only be offered to machines on which it will be stable, for those that may have issues there will be a Safeguard Hold in place until the issues are resolved by Microsoft and/or their OEM partners.

This may be the reason sean is being advised to avoid 22H2 for now.

Intel and Microsoft have found incompatibility issues with certain versions of drivers for Intel Smart Sound Technology (Intel SST) on Intel 11th Gen Core processors and Windows 11. Windows 11 devices with the affected Intel SST driver might receive an error with a blue screen. The affected driver will be named Intel® Smart Sound Technology (Intel® SST) Audio Controller under System Devices in Device Manager and have the file name IntcAudioBus.sys and a file version of 10.29.0.5152 or 10.30.0.5152. Only devices with both an Intel 11th Gen Core processors and an Intel SST driver version of 10.29.0.5152 or 10.30.0.5152 are affected by this issue.

I have no issues with 22H2, but both my supported devices for Win11 got their 22H2 upgrade through Windows Update.

There's not a lot of difference. The main new 22H2 features are the ability to create groups on Start, and the return of click-and-drag to the Taskbar.

I've used Dell computers for more than 20 years and I've never heard of a warning like that from Dell. I would never buy a computer that came with a warning like that.

I've traded for a living for more than 20 years. I'm a short-term trader and the vast majority of my trades would be considered "day trades". My broker is Interactive Brokers and the trading platform I use is Interactive Brokers Trader Workstation. I trade only a few stocks that I know very well and I only trade one stock at a time. Trader Workstation also runs on my backup computer and I also run IBKR Mobile on my Android Pixel 6 Pro. I enter trades only with bracket orders where my entry is on a buy-stop and all stops are in place the moment the order is placed.

22H2 22621.608 runs on both my computers and I've not had any problems. I'm not a member of the Insider Program and I do not run beta software.

My backup system:
1. OneDrive - I keep all my data and photos in local OneDrive with a real-time mirror in cloud 1TB OneDrive.
2. Microsoft File History kept on portable Samsung 2TB T7 SSD's.
3. Macrium Reflect full drive images.

So far seeing no issues with 22H2 RTM, got it on Dell Vostro 5890 Desktop, HP Pavilion 590 Desktop and Dell Vostro 3400 Notebook. Both Dells are Pro and the HP is Home. Build is 22621.608 and offered through Windows Update.

3. Wide the drive clean and do a clean install of Windows 11 yourself! Set it up the way you want it!

Then I will have to add another step.

4. Make sure you backup the drivers first. It being a DELL, it might have 1 or 2 weird drivers.

The Dell engineers are a step ahead here. When you log in to Dell Support or run Dell Support Assist, Dell recognizes your computer and automagically updates all drivers.

Unless ofc, Win 11 doesn't happen to have your LAN/wireless driver.
I mean it takes one command and about 15 seconds, to backup all your drivers. Not exactly hard work.

pnputil /export-driver * "C:\Users\<user name>\Desktop\My Drivers"

Ofc, you need to make that My Drivers folder. That could get rough.
There's no reason to even risk the outside chance of a driver issue.

Fair enough. In all the years and hundreds of times I've done clean installs, I've never had Windows not recognize my router. But I suppose it could happen.

But I've also heard many... "but it's the LAN (or wireless), driver that's missing", over the years.
It's no big deal. I'm just one of those folks that only takes chances when I'm forced to.

The most common situation is if you have nvme drives requiring IRST drivers.

For some bizarre reason, this is not included as part of the standard MS drivers, and you cannot see the nvme drive when booting to a usb installation drive. You can add the driver at installation time, or inject driver into install.wim file and even boot.wim.

It is always a good plan to export drivers from an existing installation if possible, before doing a clean install.

Load an Image: WIM; Ghost; ISO; or ImageAssist

This doesn't sound to me like advice that would come from Dell. It appears to me that Dell has contracted someone to install their computer. If it were me, I would call Dell support and see if they are aware of what is going on.
