Awesome. I have one M.2 gen5 port but gen5 disks are still expensive, Ive just bought another gen4 2TB drive to replace last gen3 of 500GB and will use it mainly for backups. I'm SATA free couple of years now, (darn those cables, I hate them) now 3 NVMe on MB and one in PCIe adapter, For main windows just 1TB because I keep data on other disks, just programs/games on C:, M.2, best invention after hot water and sliced bread. Comparing to number of disks I had just couple of years ago, my case is now missing about 20 cables.

I don't have any Gen 5 at all. Gen 4 is fast enough for this old dawg. Even my work stations don't sport Gen 4 but admittedly, I'll use RamDisk from time-to-time. You remind me of myself around 20 years ago when I could finally say goodbye to IDE ribbon cables and trust me when I say those things were a veritable nightmare. Generally, unclipping a SATA cable is a whole lot easier than removing a card. In my opinion SATA makes trouble shooting drives and ports a whole lot easier. M.2 not so easy. Now some very creative inventions have been implemented to get around that teeny-tiny leetle screw that holds the M.2 stick in place, but even with these, on a well-populated system board, they rarely beat the advantage of unclipping a SATA cable. SATA can be hot plugged both externally and internally. The idea of eliminating my hot swap sleds makes me shudder. I suppose I could settle for my toaster (if I had to) but even my out-dated toaster only has SATA connectivity. I have to use an adapter with M.2/NVMe if I want to access it externally instead of on board. So I would conclude that both have their advantages and disadvantages. Five years from now Gen 5 will be mediocre and I'll still be running my klunky old Gen3 and complaining about TBMT. lol

I converted all 3 of leftover SATA SSDs with USB3 gen 2 adapters but SATA are dead end and too slow. There are USB adapters for M.2 drives too, I have 2 and would never use classic dongle again Prices are also practically same for M.2 and 2.5".

Five years from now they'll still be selling SATA drives. It really is about user preference. I just got this thumb drive yesterday. Had no idea that the envelope had blown off my front door step and got caught in my fence two days beforehand. Was ready to call Amazon because it was reported as delivered. Perhaps card readers will make a come back with M keys. Would be nice to have a slot built into the front of my PC for this.

There are card readers for case fronts but there are about 120 types of storage cards, At one time I had a match box full of them, now only in the phone and camera. Too easy to misplace, lose or crush.
There are even hot plug USB to M.2 adapters, no need to dig thru case, With USB3.2 gen 2 they are as fast as built in, USB4 which is twice as fast is also built in some MBs.

M.2 SSDs also come in small sizes not much larger than full size SD card

I got this Gen.5 SSD with a special discount on the usual online shop, just 20 Euro more than a good Gen. 4, I use it for the OS and some frequently used folders. I don't know if I would or would not notice any difference Vs a Ge.4 but what i can say is that loading huge LR catalogs is a breeze and also working with both LR and photoshop open doesn't slow down the process at all. I have almost 20 years (150.000+) of digital photos and SATA HD are from my old system. I don't know how Alice felt when she got to Wonderland but I think I feel like she did.

I don't know if this is the right place but as I am talking about my new system i want to ask and add something i just found in Asus site on my MB details and support: AMD NPU driver 32.0.203.242 released on 2025/02/25 I cannot find that driver number anywhere, should I download it? It seems CountMike

I keep mine in a keyboard roll-out drawer that I installed under my desk. Admittedly I must have well over four dozen of these little dongles of various architecture and design. I know about the adapters and I'm getting a good collection of those as well. This is why I thought having a front panel reader that included NVMe might be handy. I suppose I'm getting lazy in my old age. At least my latest NVMe adapter no longer requires me to use that pesky little screw. Amazon.ca
