Snipping tool

This is a minor problem, but very irritating.

Until last update when I took a snip, the snip stayed on the screen for me to save/edit, whatever. Now as soon as I take a snip it disappears, and I have to click the taskbar icon to get it back.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Running 22H2

Yep - it is an annoying issue. I have complained on feedback hub. Nobody has found a fix yet. We do not know if it is a bug or a "redesign".

Same here. It minimizes itself after a snip, quite annoying.

If you can find a Windows 10 system, copy the file C:\Windows\System32\SnippingTool.exe into your Windows 11 C:\Windows\System32 folder and also the file C:\Windows\System32\en-US\SnippingTool.exe.mui into your Windows 11 C:\Windows\System32\en-US folder. Now you have the good old Snipping Tool back. To use it simply create a shortcut to point at C:\Windows\System32\SnippingTool.exe If you have other Windows language, substitute en-US with the appropriate folder, such as el-GR for Greek.

I seriously cannot fathom why users still insist on using Snipping Tool, seriously!
Like..., these are the only markup options available with Snipping Tool!
C'mon man! That's unbelievably poor in today's standards!

Maybe because that's all a lot of people want/need? My own use of clipping tool is pretty minimal so it does me fine. What else do you think should be there? Maybe I'll see something and think, Oh yeah I could do with that.
Back on topic I just tried clipping tool and the clip stayed by the notification area until I clicked away. edit: version 22624.1465

Greenshot is an alternative to Windows Snipping tool if you are interested. Till this issue is fixed it is worth giving a try.

I prefer the old Snipping Tool to save screenshots or parts of the screen as an image over the new Snip & Sketch. This is because all the buttons to start a new snip to save etc are gathered at the left of the window and easy to access. In the new Snip & Sketch the Save button is at the right end of the window making it difficult to see and use when working a 4K with 100% scaling. Which smart guy though of it? Why not have all the buttons together? So I use the older Snipping Tool instead for convenience. As I also use the old Microsoft Paint because I don't like the interface of the new version. If you visit Winaero's site you can download a lot of interesting stuff including old calculator (better appearance than the new ugly calculator app) and classic Windows games.

PS: I just saw what you mean. In new Snip & Sketch if you take a screenshot, you are not returned automatically to the application to save it, you have to click on the icon on the taskbar first. Very inconvenient. In the good old Snipping Tool once you take a screenshot it immediately opens in Snipping Tool to save it. The only benefit of the new Tool is that you can also record your screen, but there are third-party tools for that.

If I use Win+Shift+S it copies to the clipboard only,
if I open ST and use New button, it opens in the editor.

Steps for a screenshot with Snipping Tool:
- Click Start,
- click All apps,
- scroll down to Snipping Tool,
- click on Snipping Tool,
- re-position Snipping Tool window cuz it's half off the screen!
- click New button,
- select region,
- re-position editor window cuz it's also half off the screen!
- markup,
- click Save,
- choose destination,
- re-name it, if necessary,
- click Save
- close Snipping Tool

Steps for a screenshot with the likes of Greenshot or ShareX:
- PrtScn
- markup
- Save

I just snip, open Paint and CTRL-V to edit.

But this extension is useful and can capture areas, windows or the whole page.

To markup a circle in Snipping Tool, I have to click on Ruler, then click on Ruler again to switch to Protractor, and then do my thing!?!?!?

Agree, that's why some of us prefer older tools over the new. We are not just nostalgic, we also want convenience. And yes, we could adapt to new tools, but we don't want to bother with nonsense so we keep using the good old ones we know and trust. Don't tell anyone, but some times I use the good old PaintShop Pro 3.12 from Windows 95/98 to do some easy crops and color replacement it is not that easy to do in Microsoft Paint or even PhotoShop (not too savvy). If an old tool works why throw it away?

Steps I take using the Snipping tool.

1/ Click Icon I have on taskbar.

2/ Drag cursor over area to be snipped.

Job done. No further clicks necessary, the image is auto stored to 'screenshots' folder and also copied to the clipboard should I wish to click it and edit it.

Image already saved to clipboard is available to paste directly into forums such as this.

So three clicks from start to finish to do this.
