NEWS FLASH, Windows 11 is NOT WIN 10, and WIN 10 is NOT WIN 8.1 etc etc etc
Everyone likes to bitch & moan about a successful enterprise, and complaining about how Windows 11 functions is NO exception.
Less than 20% of revenue received by Microsoft is from its operating systems. The majority of that is gained through corporate and vendor licensing. Only a small percentage of that 20% is actually from personal sales of Windows.
Their business model is NOT about ignoring home users, it is all about what contributes financially to make a cost effective business.
With that in mind, why would Microsoft actually change their operating systems to meet the needs of its personal user base? That would be financial suicide and like what I have said before in another one of my posts, the shareholders would not be happy.
As the financial minority (home users) we have a choice, accept the FREE offering of an upgrade or continue using your original system.
My guess would be if Microsoft all of a sudden stopped free upgrades and personal users had to pay a software license of (I don't know) lets say $200 or more then there would be less complaints and only the genuine who want or need the new operating system for what it is would buy it.
Is it PERFECT, far from it, but neither is real life, and we either accept it for what it is, make do with what has been offered for FREE, or stick with what you had before.
I used only Apple products for 29 years. I switched to Windows with 10 and Android about the same time. Android was the best choice I ever made whereas Windows has been decent and doable but frustrating and hard to recommend to Mac users.
It's frustrating because Microsoft doesn't care to release proper operating systems and most of their users are not only used to this but many (in this thread) actually apologize for it on behalf of a rather successful corporation.
A proper operating system isn't how I or any individual defines it. It's not how 'normal' people vs. 'enthusiasts' define it. When we take in Android, iOS, Mac OS, Chrome OS, the better Linux distros -- the hallmarks of a proper operating system are rather simple --
1. Consistency within the OS. (For instance, if you offer dark mode in the system, it should be offered everywhere.)
2. Hallmark Upgrade Releases should be (pretty much) across the Board (Task Manager should look and feel like Win11)
3. The system recognizes design advances made in competitor operating systems and adopts the smart ones
4. Oh, this should have been first: stability and security
Now, to give MS credit, I am stunned at how stable and secure Windows is. This is everything. I've given up dabbling with Linux because it simply isn't stable. Despite Zorin 16 having a far better operating system look and feel compared to Windows. No stability, no OS.
Since Linux is 4 guys and a chimpanzee but Microsoft is a billion dollar corporation -- there can be no excuse for a half baked operating system.
"The majority of that is gained through corporate and vendor licensing. Only a small percentage of that 20% is actually from personal sales of Windows."
I do not understand how this perspective is relevant to topic. Analogy: Dunkin' Donuts. Suppose Dunkin' Donuts had a HUGE corporate office delivery business. That 80% of their sales are delivered from stores to offices and thatonly
20% is actually from personal sales in stores.
So what? If they make produce proper donuts and coffee -- Dunkinsoft can please both types of customers at the same time. And if the corporate customers are too busy to notice there isn't enough cinnamon on the cinnamon donuts -- bless the personal consumers who noticed this and asked for the right amount.
To me this is that simple.
"As the financial minority (home users) we have a choice, accept the FREE offering of an upgrade or continue using your original system."
It's not free. We pay the OEMs some money for their licenses. And the notion of charging directly for OSes is done.
"Is it PERFECT, far from it, but neither is real life -- "
... whoa whoa whoa. (Sound of trash truck backing up... BEEP BEEP BEEP.) I can't speak for others but I'm not asking for perfection. I'm asking for Microsoft to do what Apple Mac OS, iOS, Android, Chrome OS, and better Linux Distros already do: offer a proper OS at the time of release.
Microsoft could easily steal back a chunk of Mac OS business. Windows 11 simply needs to be finished. I know operating systems evolve over time but what I mean is they need to finish what they started here. Before they introduce the Android Subsystem they should have Windows itself far more polished along the obvious guidelines that the Feedback Hub has provided them. If they don't --
-- it means the Android subsystem will be released as a half-@$$ed mess as well.
