WD Nas Drive not the same in Windows 11

I've removed the WD MyCloud because of the software security issues, it was referred to as OS 3 and couldn't run 4 or 5.

Don't really suggest you do this, but you could try enabling SMB 1.0 per this tutorial - Enable or Disable SMB1 File Sharing Protocol in Windows. (also work on Win 11).

That "might" solve your issue for Windows 11, but SMB V.1 poses a security risk and isn't suggested to be enabled, but some (older) devices do require it, so...

There seems to be a WD SES driver that you need to install.
But before you do, make sure to create a restore point in case this does not solve your problem.

I just realized that you drives are recognized as "Network" drives and I thought you are hoping to use them as local drives.

You probably need to manually map the drives.

Yeah I just took a read of that, don't think I will try it, looks like I will have to give up on this drive, just a shame as 2TB was handy for backups.
I guess as it is 12 years old maybe I should just buy another drive and be done with it.

The Nas drive is located remotely for security and the ethernet cable runs under the floor, I wonder if a new USB drive can be connected the same way with an Ethernet to USB adapter at both ends?

Be aware that if the "legacy" driver is installed, it will not allow Memory Integrity under Core Isolation to be enabled. Also note that Windows already installs an SES version per this note...

Note: The legacy WD SES Driver date from 2011 or earlier is available for download.
Newer SES Drivers are distributed through Windows Updates and are installed automatically with WD Security, Drive Utilities and Smartware.

And given the age of that drive, it may come down to enabling SMB 1 if you want to use it. But that's just a guess.

@badrobot, I don't think your suggestion was wrong, it's just that software doesn't support enabling Memory Integrity. However given the age of the OP's drive, and issues, it may actually solve the issue. I would just try WD Discovery first and go from there.

Yeah, I took it back. I realized it is a network drive and not a local drive. My bad.
Network discovery is probably disabled on OP's Windows 11 PC.

For location of a drive the limit of USB is 16 feet for a passive cable but probably twice that for an active cable and for Ethernet cables is 100 meters or about 300 feet.

It actually is compatible with that drive as noted in the notes when it mentions these programs "WD Security, Drive Utilities and Smartware". which is also on the drives download page. Additionally, I had it installed with my NAS, but removed it once I found all I needed was WD Discovery.

I raised the question with WD Support and they sent me this....

Networked attached storage devices will not appear in Windows Networking due to:

"SMB1/CIFS Network Browse" function has been disabled on Windows 10 v1709 and higher and Windows 11.
Guest access in SMB2 has been disabled by default in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update version 1709 and higher and Windows 11.

I am not quite sure what all that means but they gave me instructions to remap my shares which I did and can now see my folders and files in Network Locations as I used to in Windows 10

I believe some suggested this but I couldn't access the drives to remap them until WD told me to enter name of storage drive in address line of storage and enter name & password which then showed my 2 drives in network locations ready to be remapped.

I did say you need to map your network drives manually (on reply #27 above).
You see even though it is directly plugged into your PC via USB, it will not be seen as a local drive because your adapter is an ethernet type which is a network connector. It is still being detected as a network drive that you have to map and type in your credentials to access the drive.
