What's New in Hardware?

Feel free to share. PC builders love new and exciting hardware.

Not saying I'll be buying this but this is interesting.

a) too many folks want their face on youtube. Ego boost. Be very careful what you buy in to...
b) still waiting for something significantly faster than my i9-1300K. Nothing on the new socket yet which is more than surprising to me.
c) also still sitting on my 3060Ti. There are new faster ones out but they are still problematic (bleeding edge still bleeding...) , and require a lottery win.

I made a video on YouTube some years back showing people how to remove the AVG bug from their Internet Explorer. It started to go viral and YouTube approached me for monetization. I turned them down. They approached me again. I turned them down again.

There really are some people in this world who don't believe cash is king. I greatly value my liberty and my freedom of expression and acknowledge that my brothers are entitled to the same. I have a YouTube channel but it is hardly for me to share my overwhelmingly handsome features with others simply to gloat on YouTube. It is a non-monetized, amateur, information how-to channel. I left the viral channel that YouTube wanted me to monetize and made a new one called Dumpster Diver's PC Reclamation. Nothing on that channel has gone viral and I don't suspect anything ever will.

Apart from all of this I still like to watch and learn what's new and what is coming to the domestic end user market. I don't do PC repairs for others as much as I used to and I've left off repairing lap tops because of my age and my eyes but I still like to keep abreast of what is out there.

krism there is wisdom in your words. We must all be very careful what we buy into. I'm grateful that there are people who have sooo much moolah that they are able to buy the leading bleeding-edge hardware so that in a few years time I will be able to purchase the same for 4 or 5 times less the cost.

Today, as I type this, I have an RTX 3070 sitting on my dining room table in a sealed box. This GFX card is already overkill for nearly all my PCs save one and you already know it's old, like me. Personally, I would never buy any of this bleeding-edge new hardware on release unless it was insanely affordable. We both know that isn't likely to happen. For nearly a decade I have waited to see Intel or AMD or someone move past the 5GHz mark in CPUs in a manner that is safe and practical for the end user. Well, they've finally done it but it sure took them long enough.

There are now CPUs that can clock to 6GHz but they certainly have their issues. I rather doubt that I will ever own one but who knows? It doesn't bother me to buy used because tried and tested works for me just fine. Rarely do I ever find myself having to return a used product that has been advertised as fully functional. It never hurts to learn what is coming down stream. Personally, I think it's going to be a while before you find anything that can run circles around your i9 processor chip but that's just me. I'm still running NVMe gen 3 lol.

I totally love that sort of thing. I call it "Making it Count". Just ordered some used Crucial RAM for my next build to experiment with. If it works well (and Crucial usually does) I'll be getting more.

DDR5 ?

nope. This is old school. DDR4 on an X299 system board. It will likely be moved later to my X99 platform as I would prefer to use my old Corsair Dominator matched set of 8X16GB on that build.

So, umm... What's new?

I feel like we are on the edge of a resurgence of what they used to call a "NetBook". These are very small PCs but very capable. The old ones were not so capable.

The latest Intel CPUs that consume only 6 watts can actually run Windows really well especially when paired with DDR5 RAM.

A friend just got the Chuwi MiniBook X N100 and I'm stunned at just how well it runs. In fact, I was impressed enough that I will soon be placing an order for one.

Below is a review of the unit he got, but there are a number of others out there.

This particular unit has a 10.5 inch screen, 12 GB DDR5, a 512GB NVMe, a 1920 x 1200 IPS touchscreen, and WiFi 6. Ports are a little light with 2 USB-C ports and a 3.5mm socket.

Ironically, the same company has an 8 inch screen unit with basically the same specs except that it adds 2 USB-A ports and a micro SD card slot.

Chuwi keeps popping up all over the place these days it seems. I remember when my girls brought home these Chromebooks from the school during the whole Covid thing and they were horrendous. I felt so bad for them that I purchased all three daughters some real laptops and sent the GOOGLE abominations back to the school. Since then a techie friend of mine showed me this wee thing of a netbook that literally just screamed. He had altered the storage drive (which I believe was some sort of SD card) but the thing was amazingly fast and responsive and used next to nothing for power. I recall wondering why Chromebooks weren't made like that. Wish I could remember the name of the thing he was using. He could detach the monitor from the keyboard and use it like a tablet. How cool is that?

What's New in Hardware?

Unclear processors with AI, DDR5 CUDIMM RAM, new NVME PCIe 5.0 drives with second generation controllers not much better than the old devices, power supplies that can't move to the new standard, vidocards that don't need PCIe 5.0. Otherwise, everything is good.
Maybe OLED monitors are already mast have.

That Silverstone makes quality components is nothing new. That you can get them at affordable prices would be news. lol I have a real die hard Sliverstone USB3 type "A", "C", and charging port with card reader/fan controller and digital numeric display for voltage output. It simply refuses to die. Wasn't cheap when I bought it though.
