Why does windows use almost all the ram?

I have 32GB and it is using 28gb with 2 browsers open using 7GB between them (chrome and canary)

What else do you have running ?

Google is taking way more than I have ever seen it.
How many extensions in either / both ?
Do you need both at the same time?
Are you running updated browsers ?

Have you cleaned out your PC lately (temp / cache)
When was the last time you ran a malware scan
and which one do you use (if any)

190 open tabs but I set them to idle when inactive. Canary and Chrome are up to date, no malware,
Cleaned up sys files and now only 2.5GB used by both browsers and 22GB total - still seems too high!

One reason why I use Firefox Portable (and use multiple instances of it, under Sandboxie-Plus) is because Chrome is an absolute memory hog. Edge is on my computer only because I'm too lazy to remove it and maybe one day I might bump into some website that's been developed by someone who is even much lazier than me so it poops on itself in Firefox.

FF doesn't handle many tabs as well as Chrome visually and the mem usage is about the same. I tried both. I'll just buy another 32GB if I notice any slowdown. Saw some hard page faults in resmon but they had no effect on performance.

Simple Tab Groups addon for Firefox is better.

My test results are very different from yours, especially about slowdowns and this becomes even more problematic for Chrome when doing multitasking. Edge consumes the least amount of memory by far, but I still don't use it because it's such a complete and utter FAIL on so many other levels TBH.

Next thread you'll be posting is, "why is Chrome consuming all 64GB of RAM? I have 350 tabs open. I think I'll upgrade to 128GB."

Chrome will use all RAM available for caching. No matter how much you have. Actually the more you have the more Windows will gladly hand over upon request.

You'd be better off looking at your browsing behaviour and pages that are problematic rather than upgrade our worry why you have high RAM usage. RAM is there to be used, not to brag how much exists or is free.

You are probably right. I tend to forget links I save in bookmarks so I leave the tabs open. I used to have 2 Edge windows with another 150 tabs or so. In any case, I'm not experiencing any slowdowns.

Right after a clean boot Windows is using almost 18GB - still not sure why. No mem hogs in my startup

Could not agree more, 130 open tabs is absolute lunacy! I have anymore than 5 or 6 open and it starts to hurt my head, Bookmark bar or a speed dial. Like those people who have 4842309434 random folders/files etc all over the desktop.

Desktop is totally clean lol

We all think and process differently. I have a lot of interests that I am active with daily. If I put them in bookmarks they are too hard to find or I'll forget them. I've cut back from 4 browser windows and 300+ tabs!

This! I use the bookmark bar daily! I don't know how many bookmarks I have, but I have folders for a lot of them. .. And I only have like 3-4 tabs open at once. . . 130 tabs open? WTH. . . He tryin to fry his computer? lol jk . . but seriously, there's really no reason for that many tabs to be open at once.

Put it this way, Daily, a maybe access the same 5-8 websites, Everything else..i have hands to type in, why save something or keep it open if im only gonna need it in 6 months ago, Pointless. My best guess is people are lazy xD!

Do you have your browsers and all of their tabs open automatically when you start from
from a complete shut down?

Do you have any malware suites running? If so, pls tell us which one. I didn't see any
from the task manager screen you posted.

From a standing start , open task manager and click on the Performance tab then the Memory tab.
Post a screen of that pls as asked by @TairikuOkami.

Could you also post the Startup tab in Task Manager.

I sometimes work with large numbers of open pages in my browser, but I'll manage then by creating groups or collections. That way I don't necessarily need to have them all open at the same time, but I can rapidly and easy open an entire group.
