Windows 11 Annoyances

Personally, I'm really liking Win 11 with the exception of 2 highly visible GUI bugs still in the final product. There are other things that are annoyances in the design decisions , but they are not flat out bugs at least.

My major annoyance is that MS is NOT listening to their users as they claim. Why would anyone using a PC want to go into settings to change a simple thing that was able to be changed in Windows 95 with a single click. The Desk Top Context Menu is another step backwards. Windows 11 however at this stage is very stable and faster that Windows 10. There could be a reason that they are doing this.
we had a new system implemeted at work recently and it was totally inefficient, when I ask why they did that, they said """"""" has been testing it for months and now its good to go, seems our "yes man" has been testing it and its good to go.

With any updated version of Windows it's taken a few days to get things sorted as I like and a bit more time to get used to it. So I feel we have to allow for that (if we haven't already). Yes, I'd rather some things were different but it's useable for me.
But I am reminded of a thought I had some years ago that a new Windows is like encountering an FBI style security officer who smiles nicely and tells you he'll help you all he can while subtly guiding you further and further away from what you're asking for.

Hi,
Only issues seem to be the obnoxious security requirements
And the default mobile mac device setup/ trashed start menu/ silly context menus

Otherwise need the same alterations as win-10 needs so

Best part so far is no sfc corrupt files after a inplace upgrade wonder if it's just broken lol :lmao:

What "highly visible GUI bugs" are you talking about?
1) Open File Explorer. Click in the search box toward the upper right. Now right-click in that same box. A flyout will open. Move your pointer over the flyout but don't click it. Keep moving the pointer until it exists the flyout. Congratulations, you have just locked File Explorer. As a fix, ALT-TAB or WinKey-TAB away from File explorer and then back again. Select an option from the flyout menu. File Explorer is now accessible again.

2) Logoff and back on to Windows, or restart. Click on Start. Now click on either your user name or on the power button. Note that neither one responds. Instead, the search box at the top of start simply flashes once. After that first time, clicking on user name or power button is fine. This only happens the very first time after you logon before you click on anything else in start. If you clicked on anything else in start first, it will be just fine.

EDIT: For issue #1, once you ALT-TAB or WinKey-Tab back to file explorer, make sure to click on the flyout. If you slide the pointer over and back out, you will lock it again. As an alternative, it seems to unlock itself after a few minutes :)

My apologies if any of this information is redundant.

  • In Explorer, I am accustomed to right click a file and hit M to rename the file. Admittedly, I have had third party programs which amended context menu items that broke that feature. Would much rather remove those third party items. Now It's still there but it's hidden behind the Shift+F10 to invoke the classic menu, so That's a big annoyance for me. If you do a double click with a pause inbetween on default settings, you can rename your file, but I am using the single click to open an item setting in Folder Options. (EDIT: now I am seeing you can press F2 while the file is selected or while the new context menu is up in order to rename the file, so that's cool, I'll just have to remember.)
  • In Explorer, when renaming a file with the same filename but with different capitalization, the filename reverts to the original capitalization. To workaround, you can change a character and then change it back with the desired changes to capitalization.
  • From Explorer, dragging a file to hover over the explorer icon on the taskbar used to show the currently open Explorer windows and allow the user to choose which one to bring to front before dropping the file. Now you get a "NO" icon. You're gonna have to use your keyboard to show the Desktop while dragging.
  • In a browser, dragging a downloaded item (or an image on a page) to the 'show desktop' area in the bottom right corner used to show the desktop and allow you to drop the file on the desktop. Now you get a "NO" icon. You can use the keyboard to Alt-Tab while dragging.
  • In Chrome, when dragging a tab to separate it from the parent window, we used to not be able to snap a single tab as a new window, which we now can. Previous behaviour was the separated tab would always maximize. However, if you have the snap preview feature enabled and then choose another window as the opposing snap side, then the tab you separated becomes maximized behind the paired snapped window. Edge does appear to be able to drag out, separate, and snap as expected.
  • I can't click the volume icon in the systray and scroll in place to adjust volume, I have to hover over the seek bar to use scroll.

I have some annoyances that persist I think from the beginning of time with Windows integrated utilities having outdated cursor behaviour that is inconsistent with the usual expectations or protocols in Windows:

  • Inability to side scroll by holding shift while scrolling the mouse wheel. In Windows apps such as Paint there is simply no response. Ctrl+scroll, on the other hand, adjusts the zoom as expected. In the Services console, Shift+scrollup instead highlights the item under the cursor and invokes the properties window for that item.
  • In notepad (maybe others), triple click should highlight the entire row, it does nothing. The second click highlights the random "word" and the third click unhighlights and inserts the text cursor at the position of the mouse cursor. Double click does not follow the same rules of punctuation or spacing marking the end or beginning of a highlighted word. For example, you can double click an email address in Notepad and select the whole thing, whereas the highlighted section would typically stop short of the "@" and/or "." characters. This inconsistent behaviour can be exasperating when copying and pasting between Notepad and any other environment. (EDIT: also the down directional key fails to move the cursor to the end of the line if the cursor is already somewhere in the last line.)

I got the spinning circle. I think File Explorer is looking for something. I unlocked it by right clicking on the icon on the Taskbar then clicking on Close all Windows.

Well I was able to reproduce the first issue. Weird.

Couldn't reproduce the second despite several attempts.

At any rate, I get your point now, and yeah, Microsoft needs to fix those.

Well I was able to reproduce the first issue. Weird.

Couldn't reproduce the second despite several attempts.

At any rate, I get your point now, and yeah, Microsoft needs to fix those.

Interesting that you could not reproduce the second issue. Happens to me on about 10 different machines. I have not encountered a single machine where it does not happen. I'd be curious what the difference is. Maybe some setting that I set on all my systems.

Per your instructions: restart the computer, open start, click either profile name, or power button. I did that and I couldn't reproduce the issue. Certainly followed your Explore instructions.

Dru2, I have no doubt that you did exactly what I stated. Hope my last comment didn't give impression otherwise. I was merely curious where the difference is. Maybe something like a display driver or some specific setting that I make to all my machines.

But I'm glad you did not encounter it. That gives me some incentive to try messing with settings to see if I can narrow it down to something :)

When I open a menu (right click) on a folder in pictures, sometimes it will disappear, and I have to keep repeating until it stays on. I don't like the fact I have open options to rename a folder, that should be in the first pane.

You have one-click open set, correct?

There is a workaround (besides gong to double-click).

Change the mouseHoverTime from 400 to 100 or 50:

This has been fixed in the dev channel. Who knows when it will make it to the official release.
