Windows 11 Annoyances

The problem lies in so-called Social Media. FB, Twitter, and all these other sites all lumped under the category of SM are mis-categorized. They are not media sites, not even media aggregation sites.

They are sites where anyone can post just about anything and someone somewhere will believe it to be true.

Unfortunately, true media sites bought into the SM scene and started posting their actual media posts directly to these SM sites. And then lots of people learned that, if you have a decent, official looking website, with links that work, you, too, can be a 'media' outlet. And thus was fake news born.

I'll stop there before this ventures into one of the forbidden conversation topics - it's only relevant because too many people actually go to Twitter, FaceBook, Reddit, and other SM sites for their daily dose of news, and get taken in by the fake stuff that is posted right alongside the real stuff. And to make matters worse, all these bloggers and vloggers have to be / would rather be first in making a post / video instead of taking time to actually verify information before posting - IOW, rather than be right.

Real, true information is getting harder and harder to discern from cruft, mis-truths and flat-out lies, these days. People would rather have the information 2 seconds after someone says it, even if it is wrong, than have to wait 5 minutes for verification.

/End Rant
Totally agree, SM with these faceless (see the irony re: FaceBook?) wokes has done more harm than good. It did open my eyes to how many stupid people there are in this world though... but yeah, it's for a different forum to discuss - just my 2 bitcoins.

Yes my mistake i should have said natively. With each new version of Windows we seem to lose as much as we gain. For me im not seeing much gain to Win 11.
Hi there
the real gain will be from Ms -- as they will eventually insist on some sort of TPM keys and encryption making piracy all but impossible. That's a way off yet but it's bound to be in the Ms mindset. However with so many LEGAL ways of getting W10 and W11 for FREE I wonder if the Windows piracy thing is a bit overdone. Ms Office piracy is another ballgame of course and of much more concern to Ms - partly why they introduced Office/365.

Those who buy really cheap keys for Office 2019 -- it's pot luck now or "Caveat Emptor" as some of those keys are not for retail and Ms has tightened up a lot on the activation procedure -- even to the extent some some legit copies are getting Nag warnings about License after recent updates.

Cheers

Well when and if that ever happens i think i will have got rid of Windows all together and gone wholly to linux. I fear MS is going down the route of Apple with the whole control freakery which is why i left Apple, well that and their stupid prices which are not justified.

Just need third party developers to support linux more and then that will really cut into MS standing and profits. Dont really need MS Office as there are viable free alternatives.

Hi there

Can't argue against the Linux environment -- but remember that Windows at least is a centralised platform.

Linux while hugely successdful especially in Open Source areas has problems with a multitude of different Distros. Mostly they work the same but that's not always certain.

Windows will always be successful providing Ms doesn't get too greedy.

My preferred solution is to load up a small Linux HOST and then run Windows Virtual Machines on it.

These days with "passthru" etc Virtual machines can run nearly 98% as good as the original on Host hardware -- the difference will be for most people almost undectable.

Cheers
jimbo

As Fabler2 has shown, the icon is there - along with icons for Cut, Copy, Rename and Share.

Five commands on one line, it's actually a more efficient use of space once you get used to it.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Dev, Beta, and RP 24H2 as native boot vhdx.

Wish "delete" would be on the first page of a right-click rather than under "More options".
As Fabler2 has shown, the icon is there - along with icons for Cut, Copy, Rename and Share.

Five commands on one line, it's actually a more efficient use of space once you get used to it.

It's actually somewhat confusing at first seeing we were all brought with having "Delete" right there on a right click. I'd imagine lots of folks are just as confused until they discover by exploration (me), accident or someone points out that Cut, Copy, Rename, Delete, and Share are now icons on the first page.

It's just another reminder of why people should explore any new OS to learn what's new and changed.

Another couple of irritations (and I'm sure there will be more, the further I dig...)

1: STILL no way of easily adjusting the font-size for things like desktop-icons or in Windows Explorer.
2: The settings app is now much more 'crowded' and nowhere near as easy, or pleasant, to use as in Windows 10.
3: The notification-area is now far less configurable - how the heck do you get it to show all icons?!
4: STILL no window-snapping to screen-edges.
5: The changing of the cut/copy/past/delete to icons on the right-click context-menus is a minor pain in the arse.

Cheers,

Mike.

For font size check Accessibility - Text size that might help.

I like the Settings app. Easier to navigate for me.

In notification area just drag all the hidden items down. ( Taskbar icons set to the left)

Snapping works for me or use the maximum icon top right.

I've got used to the right click icons in the context menu.

Personally, I'm finding W11 quite OK. I upgraded(?) from created media, keeping files and settings. I was pleasantly surprised that it kept Vivaldi as my default browser. But a bit disappointed that the new OS didn't seem that much different.

As I expected I am annoyed that the taskbar can't be moved. Tried the registry hack, it worked but I reverted because the taskbar looked ugly at the top and too big. I don't like it at the bottom but it's look is less troubling there. I'm still hoping we might get the option to resize it and I can put it at the top where (for me) it belongs.
I don't particularly like the new start menu but can live with it - deleted the stuff I didn't want there and added what I did want. It's OK. The other thing I felt I needed to do was the fix the new context menu. Too many things that I use often were hidden so I had to deal with that with a registry fix.

What bothers me about it is having to resort to registry hacks to do things that could have been left as options. MS knew these were going to be issues for many. Otherwise I feel it looks in some respects better but in others like it was designed to be attractive to young children, not grown ups. But I can live with it as long as performance is as I'd expect.

I have a 4K screen on this machine - I wouldn't want W11 on even a full HD screen as it stands because of the task bar. I was waiting for W11 before making this machine my main use device - now I'm torn. My current one won't get W11 (AMD processor but far from being old and fine for most needs) and I wouldn't like W11 on that right now.

(Just venting my feelings about it. Hope in future I can make a more positive contribution here!)

Same here, i have it on my laptop just to keep up with development, but there is no way at present its going on my desktop which also has 2 x 4k screens and is running just how i want it with Win 10. I can see very little in Win 11 at present to interest me.
