Because we can. If I experience a major problem with a new build I can always use a Macrium image to go back to a more stable build. My two main complaints about the Canary builds is that MS should have warned us early enough to drop out before a clean install was our only option and my second complaint is spending all that time to update to a new build that doesn't really offer us anything that most of us will use.

Why do you think MS created the Insider Program? They want to hear about our real world experiences, be it positive and/or negative. IMHO, the ones who keep quiet about any insider problems they are having shouldn't be in the Insider Program. Silence isn't always golden.

I could not agree more with @cereberus. Not only is it a mess, but I would need to do a clean install of Windows 11 to change to the dev channel. When I first installed Windows on my dual boot system (after a bad system crash due to a bad kernel), I chose a beta iso, and the dev channel was greyed out (aargh). But MS was happy to allow me to install Canary. Makes no sense whatsoever.

Anyway seems to be installing OK. Just install as a VM and leave running in the background so you don't have to spend any time on locking up machine on installing it. Why people would put these builds on to their only machine not as a VM is beyond me as these are TEST builds. People griping about these builds costing them time on their main machine shouldn't IMHO be using them.

Hi Jimbo,
You are offering some valuable advice as far as running insider builds in a virtual machine atmosphere. Of course and this statement is purely mine is that you have to have a powerful enough computer to do so, unless I'm missing something.

I upgraded two VMware WS 17 VM's to this version. Taking snapshots and will suspend. All VMs are on RAID 0 device with 1.82 TB disk space. It has survived a terrible crash of my desktop machine which was running Windows. I don't really care but it is a bit of fun.

Can I make a hypothesis that Canary channel focus more on kernel changes whereas Dev is for features? Why couldn't they implement features for Canary along with kernel changes as current kernel updates are quite promising.

That is a reasonable hypothesis. However, there is no way of knowing. Which channel do you speculate will be used for Windows 12 development or perhaps something new?

After 5 full years in Dev (now Canary), I cleanly re-installed the current Dev build of Win Pro FWS on my main system.
All my programs, apps, and tweaks had been saved in advance but the process still took a good 8 hours.
Canary & Release are now on VMs along with XeroLinux, all within a network consisting of 3 machines, running
Win 10 & Win 11 respectively.
I am surprised there were no issues, and after 48 hours all is well.
But patience (don't have much of that) and care (can be sloppy because of rushing) are a must for this lengthy process.

OK. I just noticed that the Canary build from June 14 is 23H2 vs the Dev build from June 22 is 22H2. Does this mean anything at all. Curious mind want to know. In any event I don't want to make an NTFS partition on my remaining SSD with Manjaro. I can;t justify it.
