Insider Windows 11 Insider Canary Build 25947.1000 (23H2) - Sept. 7

UPDATE 9/13:

 Windows Blogs:

Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 25947 to the Canary Channel.

REMINDER: As builds released to the Canary Channel are “hot off the presses,” we will offer limited documentation for builds flighted to the Canary Channel including documenting only the most significant and highly impactful known issues. Please note that we will not publish a blog post for every flight – only when new features are available in a build.

Fixes for known issues

  • Fixed a high hitting ctfmon.exe crash in recent flights, which may have impacted the ability to type for some Insiders.
  • Fixed a few issues impacting explorer.exe reliability, including fixing an issue which could cause File Explorer to crash when navigating to Gallery.
  • Fixed an issue which was causing explorer.exe to not work in safe mode.
  • Did some work to help improve the performance when switching between different pages in Task Manager.
  • Fixed the issue causing some Insiders to see an unexpected pop up asking you to “Select an app to open this ‘ms-screenclip’ link” after the latest Snipping Tool app update.

Known issues

  • Some popular games may not work correctly on the most recent Insider Preview builds in the Canary Channel. Please be sure to submit feedback in Feedback Hub on any issues you see with playing games on these builds.

Microsoft Store Update

Windows Insiders in all channels running version 22308.1401.x.x of the Microsoft Store and higher will see the following improvement rolling out:

New Game Pass page: Explore and subscribe to PC Game Pass or Game Pass Ultimate through our new dedicated page. With the new experience, you can learn about Game Pass benefits, such as exclusive games, deals, free perks, EA Play, and more. It’s also easier to discover, jump in, and play your next favorite game, including Day One games, new games on Game Pass, Bethesda games, and more.

New Game Pass page in the Microsoft Store.
New Game Pass page in the Microsoft Store.

FEEDBACK: Please file feedback in Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Microsoft Store.

For developers

You can download the latest Windows Insider SDK at aka.ms/windowsinsidersdk.

SDK NuGet packages are now also flighting at NuGet Gallery | WindowsSDK which include:
These NuGet packages provide more granular access to the SDK and better integration in CI/CD pipelines.

SDK flights are now published for both the Canary and Dev Channels, so be sure to choose the right version for your Insider Channel.

Remember to use adaptive code when targeting new APIs to make sure your app runs on all customer machines, particularly when building against the Dev Channel SDK. Feature detection is recommended over OS version checks, as OS version checks are unreliable and will not work as expected in all cases.

About the Canary Channel

The Canary Channel is the place to preview platform changes that require longer-lead time before getting released to customers. Some examples of this include major changes to the Windows kernel, new APIs, etc. Builds that we release to the Canary Channel should not be seen as matched to any specific release of Windows and some of the changes we try out in the Canary Channel will never ship, and others could show up in future Windows releases when they’re ready.

The builds that will be flighted to the Canary Channel are “hot off the presses,” flighting very soon after they are built, which means very little validation and documentation will be done before they are offered to Insiders. These builds could include major issues that could result in not being able to use your PC correctly or even in some rare cases require you to reinstall Windows. We will offer limited documentation for the Canary Channel, but we will not publish a blog post for every flight – only when new features are available in a build.

Our Canary Channel won’t receive daily builds; however, we may ramp up releasing builds more frequently in the future.

The desktop watermark you see at the lower right corner of your desktop is normal for these pre-release builds.

Several times, with internet on and off, also tried build 25941 and 25931 using the iso downloaded from Microsoft.
Same issue every time, it gets stuck at windows logo, then when i reset it rolls back.
You may have to do a clean install. If there is anything you don't want to lose, I suggest you do a backup first.

Do you mean you are going to do a clean install of Dev?
Or restore a backup of some older non-Canary builds that let you switch to Dev?

There are other things broken, and yes, the one you are referring to has been going on from 25905, and they still could not fix it. 😂😜🤷‍♂️
Updates fine on any other build, but not Canary. 😵‍💫

I'm out of the loop for some time and tried to upgrade from 25193 --> 25947 but it freezes after restart then rolls back.

"Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0xC1900101"
"The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation"

I don't know if my build is too old or because my system is unsupported, no TPM stuff..
Usually, we get that error when there are some external drives connected.
Disconnect everything external and just leave the keyboard and mouse and try again.
I just did one upgrade from Windows 10 19045.3393 to Canary 25947.1000 on an old Legacy Bios unsupported Laptop, no TPM, no Secure Boot, and completed the upgrade without any issues.
Clearly, I had to use some known hacks to bypass the blocks for the unsupported device, but it is up and running now at 25947.1000. 😉🤷‍♂️

Tedious work to reinstall everything you had.
I try to avoid that as much as I can, by keeping image backups of my systems to restore in case I need to go back to a previous version. 😉

It's okay, the work is not that tedious, it's just a simple copy and paste of program files.

Regarding the system image backup to restore, it's impossible to use this technique to go back to the DEV channel or I would need a backup that dates from May 11, 2022, that's a bit far for a backup

lol, for me it is the difference between 10-20minutes vs 2-3months installing, and configuring things until all is working as expected again.

lol, for me it is the difference between 10-20minutes vs 2-3months installing, and configuring things until all is working as expected again.
Not only that -- you have to install any updates to products you had, perhaps find drivers, old serial / license files etc etc.

Re-installing everything is a total pain. That's why I always keep several versions of Windows builds -- STD, CANARY, DEV and BETA. If for any reason I need to do a fresh / clean install on DEV/CANARY/BETA it's easy enough to clone the STD edition and upgrade to the relevant build from there. Using vhdx files simplifies the whole thing too - from backups to moving systems or even creating a load of VM's for "destructive and virus testing".

Been lucky so far as I haven't had to clean install anything for quite a while now. Running the whole non STD windows builds on a nice fast 2TB NVME ssd type of external device via USBC connection is perfectly fast enough whether on a decent desktop or a laptop (and it's portable between the systems too).

I recommend these fast nvme chips -- even as externals they are often faster than the classic 2.5 inch SSD models. Do though ensure when fitting into the enclosure the heat sinks are properly fitted. The decent enclosures - about 7 to 8 cm long and 2 - 3 cm wide have an extra metal heatsink too so although these devices run hotter than classic SSDs it's not a problem.

Cheers
jimbo

You have a different problem, what do you use to watch the video? Media player or some other App? What is the display adapter and driver? 🤷‍♂️
