Windows 11 versions 23H3 and 22H2 will now be gradually updated to version 24H2

 Windows Message Center:

Current status as of January 16, 2025

Windows 11, version 24H2, also known as the Windows 11 2024 Update, is now available.

We have reached a new stage in the phased rollout of version 24H2. Eligible devices running Home and Pro editions of Windows 11, versions 23H2 and 22H2 will be gradually updated to version 24H2. This automatic update targets only devices that are not managed by IT departments. Users can choose the time to restart their device or postpone the update.

If you don’t want to wait for the automatic update, check if the update is available to you. Select  Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. If your device is ready for the update, you’ll see the option to  Download and install version 24H2.

For Copilot+ PC devices, new features will continue rolling out in phases to select devices and markets in the Windows Insider community. Note that availability may differ based on the various silicon platforms.

We will regularly share more information on the Windows 11 2024 Update rollout on this page.

For those who wish to remain on their current OS and not upgrade to 24H2, I would like to recommend GRCs InControl.

I've been using it for several weeks and I'm still on 23H2 -- I even received the latest Patch Tuesday update for 23H2 with no issues.

Thanks, but I wouldn’t use it on the grounds that most of everything this site says is bull crap and just plain rubbish. And on those grounds, I think I’ll stick with WAU Manager

GRC InControl says:

First it was “Never10”
It began before Windows 10. Microsoft decided that it knew what was best for each of its users. So every Windows user was forced to move to Windows 10, whether or not it was best for them. But no one thing is best for everyone. So back then Never10 was created to return power and control to where it should be: in the hands of individual Windows users.

Now it's “InControl”
For many years, Microsoft led the world to believe that Windows 10 would be the final version of Windows. That sounded good to people who just wanted to use Windows to get their work done. Then Microsoft decided that they would create “feature release” updates to give Windows an evolving set of features. Many people just wanted Microsoft to leave Windows alone and fix its bugs. But once again, Microsoft believed that it knew best. So these twice-a-year feature updates became mandatory (even when they caused some users serious problems).

Windows 11
When Microsoft announced Windows 11, they said they had never implied that Windows 10 would be the last version of Windows. Okay, whatever. But now history is beginning to repeat itself and many people are wishing that they could have some control over these often unwanted changes to their system.

What bull crap? Steve Gibson (who's in charge of GRC and does a weekly podcast "Security Now" that has been running since 2005) is a very knowledgeable person when it comes to computer security. His website is a trove of info and freeware products that are very trusted.

If you say so. That whole section of text is just anti establishment written by this guy who can’t fathom that a business has the right to operate as it chooses to.
Microsoft decided that it knew what was best for each of its users? No, Microsoft decides what is best for it’s software. What company wants to be responsible for 4 different versions of its software, financially, it is a no brainer. So yes, people have been gently prepared for an end of service for a long time.
The comment regarding Windows 10 being the last OS is debatable as it is my understanding that there has been strong argument that Jerry Nixon may of been out of line making the statement. And even if the statement was sanctioned by Microsoft, God forbid a company ever chose to change its mind.

Many people just wanted Microsoft to leave Windows alone

lol

But now history is beginning to repeat itself and many people are wishing that they could have some control over these often unwanted changes to their system.

There are very few things I have come across in this forum that have been unable to be manipulated.

It’s nothing against you or your choice of software, its simply that the guys paragraphs above are nothing but a whingefest and it simply gives me diarrhoea. It doesn’t take much to turn me off something and I make no apologies for being an a-hole.

For all I know the software is awesome, i’ll never know.

Just my opinion.

Today I was automatically updated to 23H2 24H2 26100.2894 without given an option to decline. After turning on my VM, I walked away for 1 hr. (I usually wait 25~30 minutes to let my computer do background maintenance, et cetera) Upon returning I noticed 5.023 GB had been downloaded and the install was at 67% complete.

I had been avoiding 23H2, especially after reading posts within this forum. I typically wait until absolutely required to update to new MS OS versions and usually wait for XX.2 for macOS version upgrades (e.g. 15.0 to 15.2). I am never interested it rushing to get the newest features in any software.

The end of life for 22H2 was October 8 last year. Not updating would be a risk that I would never take.
We’re given security updates by Microsoft for a reason, staying on 22H2 denies you this.

I am never interested it rushing to get the newest features in any software.

Hardly new.

In my opinion, it’s 24H2 that is worth avoiding.

Yes, I made a similar typo another person did. I meant I was updated to 24H2 as displayed in my spec section.

I use WAU Manager. I don’t like being forced to do anything. Mummy still tries shoving oatmeal down my throat when I visit her, I am 60yo
I say “MUM, BACKOFF or I’ll throw a tantrum”

Just wanted to give you a sneak peak into my personal life.

WAU Manager and WUMT do the same thing then?

I have updates paused until 22 February. Hope any glitches are sorted by then. Although in a couple of weeks I might try clean installing it after doing an image and see what happens. But on one machine, the touchpad wasn't working properly.

I have 23H2 and ran auto updates for a long time until one day I shut them off because everything seems to be running great and I'm terrified that one more change will cause a giant issue. From here on I want to read and understand every update before I install, and do it one at a time so if something happens then I know what to undo.

Blindly installing everything MS sends down the line onto a working system never seemed like good policy to me. I feel like it's always a balancing act between those wanting to hurt me and those wanting to help me. Both are really scary lol
