Windows 11 versions 23H3 and 22H2 will now be gradually updated to version 24H2

I have one machine that I've been keeping on 23H2.
Today the 24H2 update has changed from being optional to being mandatory.

24H2 came up for me yesterday but did give me the option to download and install. I paused updates!

Same. When MS FINALLY release a STABLE version which resolves ALL problems and EVERYONE can use it without any of the current bugs, then I will update.

I think it's this update that brings up the 24H2 update

Yesterday Windows Update said 24H2 was available, but it was optional and I was free to ignore it and could check for and get other updates without 24H2 installing.



. Today it's no longer optional. I cannot get any further updates until I have downloaded and installed it.

Thanks. After a recent system restore to remove a printer driver (long story - on another thread), it removed KB5051989 which was installed yesterday (the one pasted above).

After running Windows update again, it installed KB5051989 again and straight after the 24H2 option to download and install came back again. Thank you for pointing out it installs on it's own if you ignore it (I have updates turned off now).

But I think it's KB5051989 that triggers the 24H2 download. Because that has happened twice now. So suggests to me if you don't install KB5051989 you won't get the 24H2 update forced on you.

But as you say that means not doing any more Windows updates!

Seems like kind of a moot point to keep struggling to avoid 24H2 for a few more remaining days. Might as well accept it, try it out, and see what if any bugs develop so you can learn to deal with them now. You may not even have any issues. Except for the silly upside down explorer menu (said to be fixed in latest Beta update but not) my 24H2 RP and Beta builds are running pretty smoothly now without issues.

I've tried to update three times (different releases), tried every possible solution suggested, yet 24H2 keeps breaking my audio and bluetooth... therefore, no thanks. Even a tech expert (and programmer) who is one of my best friends told me it's best to stay on 23H2 until the major bugs related to 24H2 get ironed out and resolved. If I have to update just to have no audio (this is my major beef), then I will gladly "avoid" 24H2. No offence, eh.

I have an identical laptop to my main one and touchpad wasn't working with 24H2 installed. That was a few weeks ago now. If I try installing on my main laptop, I'd do a system image first and then clean install 24H2 to test it. But I think I'll wait a few more weeks. Have updated paused for 5 weeks.

I am not struggling to avoid 24H2, I already had it on two out of my three supported devices. But this last one is my Hyper-V host machine, I wanted to wait until I was sure that 24H2 was stable before updating. I had intended to try 24H2 on it anyway after the latest Patch Tuesday updates, so I've let Window Update go ahead and install it....

I'm with ya. Been using GRC's In Control for about 2 years now, with no problems so far. You still get all the regular updates, but it's designed only to block the version update, only.

MS may have a right to update, but I also have a right to block it at any time I want to. I paid for it, ya see. Regardless of what their TOS says, which is unenforceable, anyway.

Eventually I'll update to 24H2 when they get their sh*t together over it, but that isn't right now given all the complaints I've been seeing about it in these forums.

Just a note, 2 Desktops and 3 Notebooks update on Patch Tuesday to Version 24H2 Build 26100.3194, no issues seen yet.

I would say your one of the exceptions not the rule though as most Windows 11 users are running 24H2 now without major issues and you already know that you have an issue. Now I'll admit my upgrades to 24H2 on two machines weren't all smooth as well. One machine for a while had the desktop slideshow constantly breaking anytime I rebooted or put it to sleep and I had to manually restart it every time. Then one day out of the blue it was magically fixed like an update of some kind was snuck into it without my knowledge lol. I guess that would be considered a trivial issue however.

Now the other machine was a serious issue. Anytime I upgraded it to 24H2 the file explorer would instantly crash when I right clicked on any file or folder. I ended up restoring my 23H2 build three times on that machine. Finally after scouring the internet I found a Powershell command line prompt to fix the file explorer right click crashing issue that I believe disabled development mode in any or all apps and after installing 24H2 yet again and running that command line I was good to go and have had no issues since.

In any event I hope you guys with known issues find your fixes be it newer drivers, resets, or updates of some kind. Good luck to you all.
