Acronis Failing backups since upgrading to True Image 2025

Ohhh i'll try that for sure after the drive is finished with its full format

Do have Malwarebytes Premium

Maybe why failed on PC 2 Gaming Laptop as well last night, no idea how long this full format gonna take for 8TB drive, but will try that as soon as possible

All 3 Household systems do run Malwarebytes Premium

Ah... I didn't know it was a MyBook drive.
Those may have some WD software on them, that could be conflicting with Acronis.

Hopefully, the Clean All and the format will have removed any WD software.

I was under the impression that you just had a regular 8TB drive in an external enclosure.

Their "included software" may be what's causing your issues.
With Acronis you don't need any of that. Acronis itself will protect your backups.

I've seen a lot of external drives and even USB sticks, that come with "included software", that causes various problems with what should be, normal operations.

Will see once it finishes if it does work afterwards or not

i believed i deleted the included software long ago, but never done a clean all or full format on the drive in its life, even after first getting Christmas of 2022

Previously only Quick Formatted the WD My Book 8TB drive

I do have a Second 8TB Drive in Sabrent Enclosure (received from Seagate, from winning a Twitter CES Contest in 2019) As originally i planned on using WD Black 4TB as backup drive, til i was notified i won the Seagate 8TB lol--no i never done a clean All or Full Format on that drive either lol

Yeah... I think the WD software is a bit harder to get rid of.
But the: Clean All command should do it.

Minitool Partition Wizard (free),is a great program to have on your computer. It shows a lot of things that aren't visible in Disk Management. The Minitool installation directory is only 77MB.

If that's just a regular Seagate drive, it probably doesn't come with "included software", so that one should be OK.

But even if it does... the DISKPART Clean All command should take care of that too.

You can add exclusions in Malwarebytes if needed. You can come over to the Malwarebytes forum and I can assist you there with exclusions.

Ok Thank you! Format of The WD My Book 8TB about 30 percent so far, then will test and see if works better lol either on this PC or PC 2 Gaming Laptop, if it does the backup properly again maybe i won't need exclusions.

But if still fails, then will pop over to Malwarebytes Forum, and try Exclusions as next step to try

I'll be glad when everything works proper again lol, all this troubleshooting, and stuff slightly getting on my nerves lol

PC 2 Gaming Laptop did a test while Main Backup drive still in Full Format Process

Closed Malwarebytes 5 Premium

Hooked up 2nd 8TB External in Enclosure (Seagate drive)

started manual backup
Result at end
Backup Completed Successfully

(First time since it updated to latest Acronis version 41393 on July 16th)

Acronis and Malwarebytes, should be compatible.

Maybe i'll experiment with exclusions on PC 1, and test it backing up later with Malwarebytes 5 Premium active, and see if it completes successfully like PC 2 did lol, you would think would be compatible, first time i ever had issue like this

Full format of WD My Book 8TB (about 50 percent)

On July 30 I upgraded 5 of my Acronis True Image (2017 & 2018) perpetual versions to Acronis True Image 2025 Perpetual. This should be the same as a current Acronis True Image Subscription. The biggest difference is that I only get support for 1 year with no updates after that.

The backups are set up this way:
Desktop 1: Backup to USB connected WD Elements 12TB.
Desktop 2: Backup to USB connected Seagate Expansion Desktop 5TB.
Desktop 3: Backup to USB connected Seagate Expansion 2TB.
Laptop 1: Backup over WiFi to WD My Book 6TB (USB connected to Desktop #1).
Laptop 2: Backup to USB connected WD My Book 6TB.

I glad I went back and checked on my backups. They have all been working OK except Desktop 1. The daily backups have been OK but on August 5 both full disk backups failed. I don't know why this happened but I'll try again today ...
Update:
I just checked. For each 2TB SSD it made two more full disk backups right after each other. I don't trust any of the 3 full backups for each drive. Because I am now running out of space on the backup drive I had no choice to delete all of these backup files and start over. I'll post again after this is done.

BTW, I have Malwarebytes Premium (v5.1.7.121) on 4 of these computers

Close Malwarebytes Premium as a test, and see if the backup finishes successfully, so far its did on one of my Secondary Laptop Computers, i haven't gotten to try Desktop 1 yet with the Exclusions for Acronis in Malwarebytes as yet, since the Drive is still doing its full format--WD My Book 8TB (70 percent done lol, might be done before i goto bed)

Been working on this issue since July 31st when i first noticed it, as i typically do my backups usually last day of month lol, or sometimes before Windows update day lol

Hopefully this temporary solution works, i did reply to Acronis support email on the successful finish on PC 2 with Malwarebytes closed as well

The strange this is that both my desktop and laptop have Malwarebytes Premium. My laptop has been backing up OK since July 30. Only my main desktop has had a problem. My main desktop is doing another full backup now of both drives. That won't finish for another few hours. I probably won't be able to check on this until tomorrow. If that fails then I will try again with Malwarebytes disabled.

Sounds good, I wish you good luck in it finishing successfully. I've worked on this issue so much, even clean installed my Windows 10 Gaming Laptop lol, almost was gonna clean install Desktop 1 lol, might still after fully fixed lol eventually

Use it to build the WinRE-based and/or the WinPE-based bootable media, and copy the resulting ISO file onto your Ventoy-formatted flash drive. Problem solved × 4. lol

Yeah maybe i go a little overboard on things

Currently don't have a Ventoy-formatted flash drive (but i can make one i'm sure)

I only typically clean install once a year or when i feel its needed, definitely not too often as i used to lol--used to clean install every 6 months when i was on Windows 10 lol, each time a feature update released lol (when it was twice a year lol )

But will try the bootable media asap here, perhaps even in the morning--as tonight starting to feel exhausted lol, been working on situation since 6:30am yesterday lol, slept a few hours over night, started again this morning

then again everyday been working on this issue since 7/31 lol, remote sessions with Acronis support on 8/1, 8/3, 8/6, and wanted another one scheduled, but can't read the german page, and keeps failing with error lol

This doesn't solve your present conundrum but for future reference should avoid getting into the same or similar situation in future.

If only people weren't so biased they could save themselves a huge amount of aggro, time and money.

Decide exactly what you want to do -- image your system, make data backups, restore your system, recover data etc. I'll assume here you want to copy / restore your system.

So anybody -- even the most biased windows user on the planet can load up any decent live distro of linux -- Mint for example is almost "More windows than Windows" these days and just type in the following command after you've booted it up.

dd if=/dev/ <your source disk> of=/dev<your target disk) status=progress. No formatting / file system creation required -- Not so hard is it.

The only thing you have to know is that instead of disks being displayed as vol C, D, E etc they are displayed as /dev/sda, /dev/sdb etc -- and if there's partitions then under /dev/sdb for example you'll see /dev/sdb1 etc/

To see these just type lsblk

Now that's hardly hard -- have the OS on a small usb thumb drive and you are in business.

For copying and manipulating partitions download the free copy of gparted -- anybody who has used any sort of partition manager on windows will have ZERO problems with the gparted interface. It's all but identical to minitool etc and It can copy partitions, re-size, move, create new UUIDS, add flags such as set partition to bootable etc etc. And it can also attempt data recovery as well although that would be at a "Disk level" -- as data recovery within a corrupted acronis image file won't be possible because of the proprietary nature of the compressed image.

For data backup --that's a whole other issue -- linux can come to the rescue with rsync and its front end gui but that's much more complex so I'd leave that alone if you are a serious Windows user.

What does still work is the old Macrium free (It's still around but not on the Macrium site) and image the disk. You can then mount the image and browse it with file explorer if you just need to restore a file -- this might do in an emergency situation but it's not intended as a data archiving tool. Note also Macrium (the stand alone bootable version) has a command line (winpe/re ) in it too which can be useful as well. This is still working on the latest releases of W11.

Honestly -- when I read of all the problems people have with various bits of backup software not working and state they'd never use Linux in a million years --well I think I've shown that with a small usb stick and a couple of easy commands you can solve most of your disk cloning problems. Even the most bigoted could use this stuff within 15 to 30 mins including downloading the iso and creating via rufus the bootable usb stick.

Nobody for one minute is suggesting you switch OS'es - but when something is broken surely any easy tool that can fix it should be welcome.

Please also whatever backup system you use DO TEST THAT RESTORE works too. Sometimes backup might record as having successfully executed - but then later you try restore and it fails.

I have added the “offending” file Trueiimagehomeservice.exe to Malwarebytes allowed (aka excluded) list. The problem persists. It only goes away if I quit Malwarebytes while I run a successful backup. By the way my rotated backups include internal and usb connected external drives (one of which is Mybook). All drives backup successfully with Malwarebytes temporarily closed. FYI my “upgrade” to ATI 2025 was from Acronis Cyberprotect which backed up with no problem with Malwarebytes running. My guess is that some subtle change in the Acronis file Trueimagehomeservice.exe might be responsible.

Acronis True Image 2025 was still having trouble creating a backup after 4 hours so I stopped it and deleted the backup files again. I then disabled Malwarebytes Premium. I started all the backups again. All the backups finished successfully about 7am this morning.

Later today when I have time I am going to contact Acronis support and open a ticket.
