I gave it to the kids because they're gamers. But man, all the butchery and and blood shed and tears! I think I must have eliminated half the OS each time I installed it. Who wants to have to do that just to have an OS they feel comfortable using? I kept it off my work station.

I have win10 on a tablet because I wanted the biggest tablet I could find with windows on it instead of android, and that's how it worked out. The tablet really only has one purpose: to show people videos, such as a veterinarian of a sick pet or trailcam footage to a hunter buddy, so I haven't really used it much. But there were a lot less things I had to fix on it.

My first encounter with win10 was after already setting up 3 win11 home laptops.

My friend made a sequential tutorial for setting up win11, from getting around the local account problem to deleting defender, and it's like 20 folders on google drive with all the apps and instructions. Even following the notes it takes all dang day.

And I'm not done yet. I'm still rummaging around online for answers.

I got tablets for the girls with Android on them. It was bad enough to have to do all that surgery to give each of them Windows 10 just so they could keep playing their games on their desk tops. Of course, I had to give them all the modified versions of Win 11 because their PCs are older than mine. The one desk top I own that was supposed to be Win11 ready crashed so horribly not even Microsoft could help me get my OS back again. Fortunately I had backups for Windows 10 but what a pain! I still haven't bothered to try to put Win11 back on that unit despite Windows stating that the hardware will support Win11. MS roll back utterly failed. I had better success installing Win11 on unsupported hardware.

I wish you the best on your search for answers. There are programs for tweaking Win 11 but then you would be at the mercy of a third party program and you likely won't get all of what you seek or, you might get more than you hoped for. I like using Rufus for installing Win11 on units that don't support Win11. Still, it's funny how none of the ladies here use Win11 on their PCs even though they have it. I gave my Win11 touch screen laptop to my 17 year old and she doesn't mind using it for school, but she games on her desktop and she studies with her laptop. Even she tells me she misses Windows 7.

I wish I had a windows phone, really. Android utterly refuses to multitask. But for kids android is probably best.

How do you crash so bad that you can't get your OS back?

I tried upgrading from Win 10 to Win 11. lol :winkt:

Should have done a fresh install. That's what I get for trusting MS.

Oh, so you can't go back to 10, but 11 won't work? I would do the fresh install anyway. If you upgrade a modified OS it probably won't upgrade right.

Likely not but yes, in this case, with a genuine Win 10 OS (completely legit) it failed to upgrade and would not let me roll back to 10. I had to install 10 on that build because it really hated 8.1. The system board was built for Win 10. I tried to dodge that but I was getting all sorts of warnings from the OS that Win 8 was not supported on the new platform.

It's straining my memory but I think I had trouble upgrading 95 to 98 and was told by a friend at the time to always do a fresh install. I stuck to that all through the years. I customize my OS so much that I'd expect problems if the upgrade routine doesn't know what to do in response to a change I made.

Yeah, I knew better but it wasn't my main so I thought I'd take a risk. I'm getting lazy in my old age. Plus I kept getting reminders that it was ready for the upgrade. I thought, "Why not give it a try?" I mean... What could possibly go wrong?? :winkt:

After thinking about it, there should be a warning to repair your 10 before upgrading to 11 if you've made any changes to the OS. How is anyone supposed to know that without first getting burned?

I'm not even updating win11. I have 23H2 and that's where it's gonna have to stay lol. I have explorer patcher, open shell, shut up 10, winaerotweaker, and who know what all that's made lots of changes that microsoft doesn't expect.

What's all the fuss!? So you desire to have the clean, simplicity of a W7-ish UI, with everything running flawlessly within the Win32 environment, with no SDK, Widgets, Gadgets and Goblins cruft..., what's wrong with that???

And..., everything running behind the horsepower of Windows 11!!!

I still have my Windows phones. I just can't remember where I put them. I dropped one of them and thought I had shattered the screen. There was a stand in a local mall that replaced phone screens. I took it to them to see about getting it fixed. The price to replace it was more than replacing the phone. I did get lucky, it was the screen protector and not the screen.

also Chris Titus toolbox seems really good for less tech people as you get a simple GUI to work from. To be able to turn of the most of telemetry.. also set updates to either security only or disable it, and also easy to change back.. It is also a good tool to debloat the system, so it runs a bit smoother with less processes in the background.

I stated earlier that I don't mind people knowing who I am. I do mind unauthorized people having access to my sensitive information. That's why TPM is such a ruse. I used to be able to run other operating systems in multiple boot configurations simply by selecting "other OS" in my BIOS. That's not so easy to do anymore.

I see you chating about Privacy... my take on this this about Privacy
it all is 50 shades of gray.. everything from you might want to hide from the government.(which is more or less impossible depending on the countries in question).... to you don't want facebook to know your contact-list,

Privacy is not a myth.. but you can't both have the cake and eat it too.. you have to make some hard choices.. Smartphone.. Yeah it works if you have a degoogled phone... Accounts and services at google, microsoft, amazon, apple, facebook.. that is not an option.... Snapchat, tiktok etc. similar to those is not an option either. (read the user agreement and privacy and data collection).. and if you see they collect more then you like... Then dont use it!!!

Running windows.. It's doable if you know the system so you know what to disable and what to literally rip out from the filesystem so some services never can start/be reactivated.. and also how to handle firewall rules and sinkholes.

To be online.. is doable if you only avoiding sharing your data with the big five mention above.. but again you have to avoid the services the big five offer and you need to know what data to block.

Privacy is not black and white...... It is nothing about having something to hide...... It is about having the choice of choosing what data i want to share with whom...... That should be the users decision not the big tech companies.

Here is a fun story.. that was in the swedish news... EU tries to pass a bill on being able to read encrypted apps etc on everyone's devices.. even non criminal.. (client side scanning) just to get hold of criminals.. and some politicians here thinks it is a really good thing and using the argument.... If you dont have anything to hide, then you dont have to worry.
So this is the fun part... The journalist asked all those politicians if he could read their latest SMS..... and they all said no, they are private. *LOL*
