Are you happy with Windows 11

Coming from win7 I found win11 to be nothing but work and frustration. The list of annoyances and "why the heck did they change that?" is endless. I'd advise you to give it careful thought if you feel win7 is sufficient and pay particular attention to those who are critical rather than a fan of 11. You'll always learn more from the 1 star reviews than the 5s.

The reasons I upgraded are 2-fold:
1) My pc is so new that I doubt drivers could be found for win7.
2) Win7 will be antiquated so I may as well get the transition over with.

The hope is this pc I've built will last the rest of my life. Once I get it set up and comfy then I can "not fix it if it ain't broke" for a long long time. But I've been pursuing that goal since March, which may give you an idea of what you're in for.

Here's an example. I'm sure you're aware how easy it is to automatically rename moved files to a folder where the files have the same name in win7. Win11 made that much more complicated. I'm intending to start a thread asking for a solution to this.

Win7: Click "Do this for the next 2 conflicts", then click "Move, but keep both files". Easy!

Why did they do that? I couldn't even guess.

Why aren't others complaining? Maybe most just play games instead of using a pc productively. That's why I say pay attention to the criticism and forget the praise.

In win7 it was easy to set a global icon view but with 11 you have to pay attention when it says "will apply to folders of this type"



You have to set a default view for each folder type, which isn't enforced faithfully, especially if the folder contains a mix of videos and documents, so you'll end up with win11 doing what it wants, with no regard for what you want.



And I discovered a new bug while constructing this post. When I rename a file on my win11 desktop, the icon jumps across the screen to some default position on the far left. Why would anyone want to play hide and seek with their icons?

The annoyances literally never end.

Oh, there's plenty of bugs, I just find a way to circumvent them or, I pay them no attention.

The reason why others aren't complaining is because, for reasons that should be completely obvious, all the others are waa-aaaa-aaaaaaay too busy enjoying magnificent free open source tweaks on their Windows 11.

When windows 11 came out, i was considering taking win 11.
after that installed it i had really no problems so far and i like it very much even on a older pc.
now I'm using for a long time i like it very much even with using android apps.
Evangely it 100% times then win 8/10 never really like that one.
cause of Sam Broadcaster DJ Program ( payed ) that runs only on windows and other stuff i will stay by windows.
i tried also Linux but nah not for me.

Lots of people on reddit don't know it either. I searched the net for hours and the best advice I found was to use a copy app or some hack that allowed the boxes to be checked by default.

This is what I have been going through since March. Little by little I find a solution, but the problems never seem to end.

I'm a long time linux user and it's still my preferred OS, mainly for it's simplicity, I do find windows a bit overly "busy". So back in '21, I decided on buying a refurbished windows 10 computer. I now have an "inherited" 10 gen intel windows 11 computer and my old refurb is running Mint 22 as my file/media server.

Windows 11 24H2 has been ok even though I find little difference to windows 10, but I have noticed wee gremlins here and there. Nothing major, but they are there nonetheless , in all their shadowy glory. But I, for the most part, just ignore them.

If you buy a new computer, or better still a refurbished one, then why not delegate your old one to playing around with linux? That's what's nice about "old-obsolete-destined for land fill" computers - they make crackin' good linux machines.

My short answer is : not impressed. Never was and likely never will be. With respect to the whole TPM thing I still think it was a kick in the teeth and a blatant unecessary munny grab. The Consortium has had over a decade to make TPM work and they're still failing that. My rig cost far too much money to go completely obsolete in five years to the extent that I can't even run a legitimate copy of Win 11 on it. So, I openly salute the copy write violators because Windows sure doesn't give a flying rip about people like me. My chip has SSE, SSE-2, SSE-3, SSSE-3, SSE4.1, SSE4.2 and it is still isn't Windows 11 compliant. As if that isn't enough to put a guy off. Windows 11 features give no real advantage over the same features found in Windows 10. For the most part IMO all we're really paying for is the Windows Dressing in a pretty blue ribbon. In fact, I find the new version of PAINT to be deplorable. Microsoft Office seems really buggy now. One Drive is a constant battle. Yes, it's all about user preference but I honestly can't see any big advantage here at the end user level. I'm not whining — I'm barking. In my opinion, Windows 11 is complete B.S.

They've had ten years to "make TPM work" (whatever that means), and your expensive computer is five years old. It should have TPM 2.0 or the equivalent then.

I like it. I have just built a new computer and I've had more problems than I've ever had before but I think they were related to my hardware combination and my tinkering to try and get things "just so". I went back and started again and it installed flawlessly: I think people are expecting too much the apple style "it just works" which is really the result of the limited hardware catered to. I enjoy the degree of customisation available and I find it runs very well. If people want it to behave like Windows 10, 8, 7 or whatever well, it's just not ,it's changed more in some respects than others but generally for the better I think.

No, you probably don't. There have been many security breaches since TPM2 and there were many with TPM. They keep coming. The project, IMO, should be scrapped. When Win 11 was first released there were people with computers that were barely even three years old that didn't comply with Microsnot's standards of compliance so I'm not alone in this. I'm not happy with Win 11 and I'm not about to pretend to be.

So while I have all my PCs linked to OneDrive, I turn off backing up all of my user folders.

I haven't seen that problem with my TranslucentTB and slideshow wallpaper option using the Acrylic taskbar option. My slideshow is set to change every 60 seconds. I'm using the new TranslucentTB version put out on the MS store last month. Now for a while one machine on 24H2 with or without the TranslucentTB kept having the slideshow break anytime I put it to sleep, logged off, or rebooted. I would have to go into settings and change themes before it would start working again. One day out of the blue it just magically fixed itself and I haven't seen that problem since. Seems every machine brings its own set of quirks and adventures with the 24H2 builds.

Apart from the removal of Cortana (which was an integral part of the original Windows 10 OS) what significant advantages can you think of that Windows 11 has over Windows 10?

I use ONeDrive but don't completely understand how it works. On my computers I have the OneDrive backup turned on for my Documents and Pictures folders. What's the advantage of turning off Folder Backup compared to using Folder Backup for these two folders.

Performance for sure!
Security..., although, some of the security measures are a bit over the top...,
other than that, most everything else is workable.
They fecked up Explorer something fierce, though..., but, we won't go there!
