Solved Do you have an PC upgrade plans??

I'm starting to give serious thoughts about updating to a newer laptop. I have an Acer Spin with a 6th gen i7 CPU. The two I'm looking at have the AMD Eight-core Ryzen 7 4700u CPU. If I'm an Intel person so I don't know how these compare to the Intel CPUs. These are the two I'm looking at. Micro Center - Computers, Electronics, Computer Parts, Networking, Gaming, Software, and more! Are either one worth buying to replace my old Acer Spin? My Acer will be donated to a family member.

General opinions are that Rysen still beats Intel I7/9 generally results can vary based on multi threading opposed to single core
But you are best off checking benchmarks for the devices you are considering and then running the same Benchmark on your current system. It's fine looking at random systems that you have no experience with but a comparison with your current system is something that you should better relate to given that you know how your current system does the things you use it for

Planning on a new build for the first time since 2017. Have the PSU and RAM. And just going to move over my RTX 2060 KO. I don't game much so GPU is overkill.

If I do buy a new laptop the Acer Spin is going to go to our son. He is using his mom's old HP All-in-One desktop.
Edit: Even though it is a i7 the Acer was slow as molasses until I replaced the HDD with an SSD.

I have a laptop with Ryzen 7 4700U. Ask anything you want. It's a small portable version (14" ASUS Vivobook), but it's really powerful. Surprisingly.

Please post again your choices, so others can give comments. Processor can behave quite different, depending on thermal solutions of laptop.

And one more thing to know. Ryzen 7 series 4 for laptops is 8 cores/8 thread chip. New Ryzen 7 5700U is 8cores/16 thread chip.

I have been wanting to upgrade all year so Windows 11 had nothing to do, initially, with the upgrade I did about three weeks ago. Six year itch gets me every time as that is about the time between builds for me. Looking now for a new home for the "old" Skylake system and think it will be in a Fractal Design Meshify 2; need that and a PSU and it's done.

I'm not sure why the link isn't working. It works for me in the Canary build of Edge. The laptops are on the Micro Center's Saint Davids Pa. site. They are in store only so they won't be listed on the Micro Center online site. The laptops are;

I just tried and the link doesn't work in Firefox.
I tried it again in Edge and it doesn't work, yet it works for me in the Canary build.

The new Macbook Pro (m1) is really fast. And it is based on Darwin Linux kernel to boot so you get a full linux shell.

Just sayin LOL.

both models are very similar, only battery is different. Looking good to me, if the price is right. Comparing to Lenovo (Yoga) and ASUS, HP Envy is a bit slower, if online reviews are correct.
To be clear: CPU for laptops, that is comparable to top desktop processors (only five years old) is amazing.

The batteries are different and the 15m is slightly smaller. Unless the 15m is newer than the 15ds I'm not sure of why the $50.00 difference. I've been very pleased with all the refurbished laptops I have purchased from Micro Center. Way better the new laptops my wife has purchased from our local big chain department store.

I just upgraded the CPU and added a Corsair liquid cooler. But it was for my recording studio apps. My desktop was TPM and CPU compatible before upgrading.

i built my most recent desktop in December of 2020, so no plans to upgrade anything. Might add another NVMe drive down the road...but that's it.

I may build a new PC for my daughter as she has an older hand me down Core i5-6500 with an EVGA 1060. But obviously with shortages on parts, this isn't planned anytime soon.

I'm still exhausted from my hunt to get my Ryzen 5900X and 3080 as well as my wife's 3060. (Got the 3060 via New Egg Shuffle).

RAM is eternal. My motherboard, CPU and disc will last at least another 5 years, but I really need a new GPU.
But considering that our civilization is ending and we have limited resources, there are only $2000 GPUs available.

I hear you on the GPU. I've been looking for one of these for awhile: XFX Speedster MERC 319 Radeon RX 6900 XT, and I see it's "finally" in stock, but at $1,700 dollars (originally $899) they can keep it. The most I "was" willing to pay for one of those was 1200, but 1700 is a rip-off.

Guess I'll be holding on to my Radeon VII a bit longer.

I ordered my new laptop. I decided to go with the HP ENVY x360 Convertible 15-ds1083cl 15.6" 2-in-1 Laptop Computer Refurbished. After comparing both laptops I couldn't see paying the extra $50.00 for the HP ENVY x360 15m-ee0023dx 15.6" 2-in-1 Laptop Computer Factory Refurbished. I'll pick it up tomorrow morning.

I'm curious If I'm going to like straying from an Intel CPU. I was going to wait to buy a new laptop until I got talking to my wife. We both decided that with our son taking courses at the community college he could get more use from a laptop then with a desktop. It's a win win situation. I get a newer laptop and he get a laptop that is newer and better than the old desktop he is using now.
