Two are mine, one is stepson's gaming PC and one is his laptop. Occasionally a fifth as I have a netbook I tinker about with.

You're given the option to change name during Setup after the install completes. Also shown in step #17 of the Clean Install Windows 11 Tutorial

Earlier in this thread I asked is it necessary to have Samsung Magician installed. Well maybe it is a good idea after all:

One of ths first things I saw this morning on my phone when I woke up was a video on YouTube "Samsung 980 Pro NVMe Failure and how to stop it from happening!"

I happen to have one of these that my OS is installed on, but mine is a 1TB. The one he refers to in the video is a 2TB.

Has anyone else watched this video? Is it pure scaremongering or the real deal?

Another confusing part of the video is at this part he says you may need to update your BIOS. Did he mean firmware?

I will have to look into this later as I am not at my new PC now.

It does seem to be limited to the 2TB drive, but Magician will tell you if there is a firmware update for yours, and can install it for you. More on that in this thread.

Thanks for the link. Yes, interesting that they say it is affecting the 2TB ones. Probably a good idea to download Samsung Magician and check the status anyway to see what it says.

Didn't hear where he mentions BIOS update, but an old/outdated BIOS can also affect system performance depending on hardware.

I have a Samsung NVME 1tb - I've never bothered with programs for ssd's before but someone suggested installing Samsung magician. I assume it's helpful - it helps you see things are working ok - it recently did an update (for the Magician software) and another one for firmware so I guess it's doing its job.

Bios updates are something else. If everything's working ok I wouldn't worry about needing a bios update. Sometimes updating bios can cause issues with some machines and then it's hard getting the old bios back. If yours is a custom build I wouldn't have a clue how to find the latest bios. If it's a branded one like HP then any updates would be on their website.

Yeah looks like it's good for checking how healthy the drive is and that.

BIOS is a word that just......scares me!

I want nothing to do with it, I never ever had to do anything with BIOS as far as I can remember, except the recent Armoury Crate thing. Even the look of the word is scary hahaha.

I respect there's folk on here that fiddle around with this stuff to their hearts content who really like it and are so comfortable with it. Not for me though! Only unless something comes up that I MUST look into it.

I just installed Samsung Magician there and all is OK. I didn't need to update any firmware.

I will keep it installed to throw my eye on the two drives every now and then!

I just leave it installed and it pops up to tell you if an update is needed. I tend to ignore that for a bit and then do it. Just to make sure the update is not too new! I think I've only ever had one firmware upgrade (which is just for the ssd of course - not the computer itself).

You know this Controlled folder access in Windows Security. Do you use that?

Also I'd like to hear if other people who have read this thread use it or not. @Ghot do you use this?

Is it much of a risk to keep off?

Controlled Folder Access is also known as Ransomware Protection. It protects your user data folders from unauthorised access or changes. The downside is that some 3rd-party apps may be blocked from saving to your user folders until you have added then to the list of allowed apps. It is easy enough to add an allowed app, and once you have added all those you use then you won't notice it is on, it doesn't get in your way.

I have it enabled on all my machines.

Hi again,

More Computers 101 questions from me.

I have most of my programs up and running, but when I went to add one that is configured with a .cmd file, it didn't work.

After some digging online, I found that the maximum number of characters in the PC name has to be 15. Of course, mine is 16

After my earlier posts in here about renaming the PC, I had gone back to my initial Macrium backup, renamed the PC (with these 16 characters), did another backup, then proceeded ahead customising Windows, installing programs etc.

Although the person who gave me this cmd script said that the PC name doesn't matter, surely the fact it is recommended to have a max of 15 characters will have had an issue when I installed all of my programs?

If I simply rename it now to not have 16 characters, then continue as normal, will that have a negative affect? Or, should I go all the way back to my base install with just my drivers and WIndows Updates and start all of this again?
