For all the people who believe aditional Antivirus software, is not necessary..

After I installed Windows 11 on my new computer, I installed McAffee AV. (Already have a VPN.) A couple of guys at work say they only use Windows Defender. Now I'm not sure what I need in terms of AV.

Mike it’s a personal choice. Many members here just use Microsoft defender, many use Microsoft Defender along side Malwarebytes.
I couldn’t comment on McAffee as I don’t use it.

Kaspersky Premium. I find their support excellent. Others may not think so. I also find it is very attentive to anything one should be concerned about. I also get it incredibly cheap from a website I use in Australia.
The only thing with it that can get annoying is the constant notifications, but most of which can be turned off.
I am not gullible enough to take any notice of the propaganda or hidden agendas that go with warnings from some countries members here. I am not a bigot, or stupid.

My Asus laptop came with Windows 11 and McAfee antivirus. When the McAfee trial ended I switched to Microsoft Defender and I haven't had any issues. It did take a while to get the McAfee popup ads stopped telling me I wasn't protected and wanted my money

Just a note on Kaspersky in the U.S.

Yes, the United States banned Kaspersky Lab, Inc. in the spring of 2024. The ban went into effect on September 30, 2024.

Why was Kaspersky banned?

I totally understand, I hate political issues. I just copy and pasted the reason which is stated on the net if anyone googles why it was banned. I took it out of my post.

I hope that posting it was banned in the U.S. after your post isn't considered political. I'm just stating fact.

You’re using the free version? Dump it, it’s crap. You’d be better of with Defender and the free version of Malwarebytes, if you don’t want to pay any money.

system security should be in layers.
updated operating systems, protection software and malware software
hardware firewall backed up by software firewalls
browser malware protection backed up by system malware protection
isolated systems not networked systems, if networking is not required
good backups of the system data and files
and the hardest of them all, end user common sense
all of which keep a check on each

just my thoughts on system security
best of luck, Steve ..

I own too many laptops: A Dell touch screen with Windows 11 and 6 others (not counting the other four laptops I bought for this household.) Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.
I was using Kaspersky until my government said I could not. So, I went back to Webroot, I've used it on off since 2012/13 with great results! Webroot let's my computers fly at high speeds.
Sorry to learn your government is so anal retentive. I'm a big fan of Kaspersky and to the best of my knowledge they've never let me down. Even still, stuff happens. No virus scanner can detect every day zero virus no matter how good it is. That's why it's good to be able to scan the same PC from different operating systems with different scanners. Admittedly, that might seem excessive but I've managed to catch nasties that the 'other scanner' missed several times this way. This is one of many advantages associated with running a multi-boot system. Once again it's all about user preference.

After I installed Windows 11 on my new computer, I installed McAffee AV. (Already have a VPN.) A couple of guys at work say they only use Windows Defender. Now I'm not sure what I need in terms of AV.
McAfee is a resource hog. I would just use defender but keep in mind the best AV is the one found between your ears.

have you tried malwarebytes anti-exploit its free and separate from malwarebytes full install.
it defends the system against zero day malware.

there is also malwarebytes browser guard extension for most browsers which works hand in glove with malwarebytes anti-exploit.
best of luck, Steve ..

Yes, I have used Malwarebytes and it is an excellent program. Sadly, it's a little rich for my blood. Kaspersky offers a good family plan and IMO is just as good. Sooner or later, there's a zero day that will get past security. That's why it's called a zero day as it isn't in the data base yet. Some of these can be anticipated based on the way they work. Others not so easily. This is also why we keep hearing about those crazy viruses coming out of China that somehow mysteriously get past security.
