Well, it's fixed.
When I spoke to the repair man he said that me updating the bios had somehow disassociated the hard drive from Windows and he would probably have to re-load Windows. Another option was to move the hard disk to another PC and then back to mine. This would link the hard drive to the new PC so that when it was moved back to mine it would see it as a foreign hard drive and rebuild the linking.
When I picked up the repaired machine, the man was reluctant to discuss the detail of what he actually did and just spoke of "specialist software".
I don't believe he reloaded Windows as all my programs are still in place as are my local user accounts.
But it is fixed now and I am very happy.
Thank you all who have tried to help me with this problem.
Chris.

That sounds like nonsense to me.

However, I'm glad that it's back.

I hope that the fee was modest.

Sorry, this repair man didn't a good job! For me it looks like he will make money. Im sure that in the bios settings ACPI was after the update on legacy. Im sure you will find here a tutorial for the different settings in the system bios.

I suspect he repaired the Master Boot Record (MBR).

It looks as though I spoke too soon!
I went to save a file to the data disk and it doesn't exist. I looked in the bios and it shows SATA port 1 as being connected to the SSD as it should but SATA port 2 is shown as not installed. There doesn't seem to be a way that I can see to change it. What can I do, please? I would take it back to the shop but 1) it is Sunday tomorrow and 2) I don't have a lot of confidence in the repair man.

That is not a windows issue. Could be a connnection problem, try unplugging and replugging the sata power and data cables on the mystery disk.

And/or try a different sata port on the motherboard.

I feel so stupid! Because of the trouble I've been having I immediately thought it was a problem with the bios. I opened the case and found that the SATA cable had not been reconnected to the drive. As they say, always check the easy things first. Sorry to have bothered you.
