How to get off Canary updates and get on Dev Channel in Windows Insider Program?

If you think about it, that's true for any version of Windows. Even on the release builds there have been updates that have caused some users major problems. IMHO, the only ones at risk are the ones who don't make backups. :-)

You can never go backwards.

Leaving Insider and waiting is pointless.

You can clone Host OS if release version and upgrade to Release Preview, Beta, Dev or Canary.

If you are running Canary as your only installation, then you failed to listen to MS who make it clear you should never run Insider Versions as your main version.

All experienced Insiders run them as dual boot or as virtual machines.

I rarely backup my dual boot versions as I can easily clone my Host OS and reupgrade.

I went backwords maybe 4 or 5 months ago when they lined up. Canary and Dev I HIGHLY doubt will ever, But Dev and Beta atleast used to( Again maybe a few times a year if that).

Sure but key difference is the hassle factor with Canary as you may end up doing it more often. W11 release is pretty rock solid apart from a few minor niggles.

That is a possibility but I bet I have a better change of recovering then the average computer users that don't even know about making backups.

Does anybody know if an intune policy that has preview builds set to Dev, will that force Computers that are running canary to switch to Dev and if that happens will it Force a reimage on the next update?? We recently changed this policy and I don't want to lose All the data on our test computer if I can avoid it.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

You can do it for a short time as long as both channels are on the same build. If you want to downgrade from Canary to Dev later, you'll have to do a clean install.
