  • Build 22623.891= New features rolling out.

KB5018863 Enablement Package for Windows 11 22H2 build 22623.xxx


REMINDER: Insiders who were previously on Build 22622 will automatically get moved to Build 22623 via an enablement package. The enablement package artificially increments the build number for the update with new features getting rolled out and turned on to make it easier to differentiate from devices with the update with features off by default. This approach is being used for the Beta Channel only and is not indicative of any changes or plans for final feature rollouts.

Insiders who landed in the group with new features turned off by default (Build 22621.xxxx) can check for updates and choose to install the update that will have features rolling out (Build 22623.xxx).

Filter processes: We are bringing process filtering to Task Manager. This is the top feature request from our users to filter/search for processes. You can filter either using the binary name, PID or publisher name. The filter algorithm matches the context keyword with all possible matches and displays them on the current page. The filter is also applied as you switch between pages. You can also use the keyboard shortcut ALT + F to focus on the filter box. This is a helpful feature if you want to single out a process or a group of processes and want to take action or just monitor the performance of the filtered processes.

The new search box at the top of Task Manager allows you to filter Binary name, PID or Publisher name.


Better theme support: We have added the ability to use your preferred theme in Task Manager regardless of the active theme in Windows. You can set it in the setting page in Task Manager.

You can set your preferred theme specifically for Task Manager regardless of your chosen Windows theme.


Task Manager now also supports themes for in-app dialogs. All dialog except for “Run new task” and Properties dialog now support themes and will adhere to either app specific theme or Windows theme.

In-app dialogs such as selecting columns on the Details page will show in the selected theme for Task Manager.


Improved Efficiency mode dialog: We are making it easy for you to apply Efficiency mode and offering the ability to opt-out of the confirmation dialog. [Taskbar & System Tray]
  • When using the bottom right edge gesture to see Quick Settings, the taskbar should no longer get stuck in the expanded state (instead of dismissing to collapsed state).
  • Fixed an issue causing the do not disturb icon to disappear while in do not disturb mode.
  • The new show hidden icons flyout’s animation should now be consistent with other taskbar flyouts.
  • The show hidden icons flyout background color should now align with your accent color if “Show accent color on Start and taskbar” is enabled in Settings > Personalization > Colors.
  • Fixed multiple explorer.exe crashes impacting taskbar performance.
Fixes for BOTH Build 22621.891 & Build 22623.891
  • New! You can back up applicable settings to your Microsoft account. You can also sync these settings on any Windows device and in Microsoft Office.
  • We fixed an issue that affected File Explorer. It failed to localize folders.
  • We fixed an issue that affected the CopyFile function. It might have sometimes returned error 317: ERROR_MR_MID_NOT_FOUND.
  • We fixed an issue that affected process creation. It failed to create security audits for it and other related audit events.
  • We fixed an issue that affected printing in landscape mode in Microsoft Edge. The print output was incorrect. This issue occurred when you used Microsoft Defender Application Guard.
  • We fixed an issue that affected Microsoft Defender when it was not the primary antivirus. Microsoft Defender failed to turn off passive mode. This issue occurred when you turn off Smart App Control (SAC).
  • We added .wcx to the list of Dangerous Extensions that some app control policies do not allow.
  • We fixed an issue that affected a computer account. Use of non-standard characters can stop the cleanup of the Out of Box Experience (OOBE) accounts.
  • We fixed an issue that affected the Windows Firewall service. It did not start when you turned on the Override block rules option.
  • We fixed an issue that might have affected applications that run on the Windows Lock Down Policy (WLDP). They might have stopped working.

[General]
  • We’re looking into reports that audio stopped working for some Insiders in recent Beta Channel builds.
[Taskbar & System Tray]
  • The taskbar sometimes flashes when transitioning between desktop posture and tablet posture.
  • The taskbar takes longer than expected to transition to the touch-optimized version when switching between desktop posture and tablet posture.
[Task Manager]
  • [NEW] Filtering by publisher name does not match correctly on the Processes page.
  • [NEW] Some services may not show in the Services page after filtering is applied.
  • [NEW] If a new process is starting while a filter is set, then that process may appear for a split second in the filtered list.
  • [NEW] The delete key and tooltip are not working on the filter input box.
  • [NEW] Some dialogs may not render in the correct theme when applied from Task Manager Settings page.
  • [NEW] The data content area of the Processes page may flash once when theme changes are applied in the Task Manager Settings page.
  • [NEW] There’s an issue we’re investigating where Task Manager isn’t displaying light and dark content correctly, leading to unreadable text. This happens when you have your mode in Settings > Personalization > Colors set to Custom – as a workaround for the time being, please switch it to Light or Dark.

It apparently does. I know this isn't isolated to just me. There are others on r/Windowsinsiders that are having the same issue. They must also be on 22623. I confirmed it's still crashing and rolled back to 22623.885. I'll try again with the next update.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

Yes, I get that too. This is not the first time this bug has been seen, it was in an earlier build too. Hopefully, like last time, it wiil get fixed in the next cumulative update. In the mean time Safe mode with Command prompt still works, and you can start most apps from a command prompt - not explorer though, that will still crash.

I tried booting in safe mode with build 22623.891 and the screen keeps flashing, the taskbar is completely missing.
The only way out was Ctrl + Alt + Del and then Restart the system.
Same behavior Using F4 or F5 (without or with network)

Sure does. Suits my low level of multitasking well; pops up after I close an App that I opened from it, drops down after my next selection, whether it be from the Taskbar or elsewhere.

    This replaced my Linux Notebook. I've used Windows since V2, tried various Linux distros but Windows continues to win for me.

Same here. But can’t get out of the safe mode now because I used macrium to refresh my boot menu and it scrambled my drives and hid my boot menu And my boot dive as well. Have one of these new systems that won’t boot from dvd drive plugged into usb port—-unless you can tell it to select other Options. Don’t know what to do! Thanks beta safe mode.

I reinstalled it and my taskbar is still broken but I might leave it for a couple of hours and see if the server pushes any patches to it that correct the behavior before I uninstall it.

Safe mode is confirmed as being boinked (technical term lol). 22623.885 works perfectly. Grab it from UUPDump.net

Safe mode isn't broken, only explorer.exe when running in safe mode. If you really need to use safe mode, then the only one that works normally is F6 (Safe Mode with Command Prompt) as that doesn't run explorer. From the command prompt you can run almost anything you need - except of course explorer. So if you need an explorer-like gui, then run Notepad and use its File Open dialog like an 'explorer'.

I left my system alone and suddenly without any warning, usually I get a you need to reboot notice, I checked and my systray is working normally again and I can move icons at will plus the taskbar hides normally.

looks like MS have used the same mechanism as ViveTool does to tweak Windows features. This doesn't actually install anything, just enables/disables features, so no reboot would be required. Personally I'd trust MS to know what they're doing here rather than experimenting with ViveTool myself and possibly breaking my system ;)

For some reason my laptop says its 22623.891 and my desktop says its 22623.898 and so far my laptop systray has not corrected itself even after lots of reboots.
