KB5035942 keeps installing daily. Why?

Tester: I tried your suggestion of deleting the cache and had problems with it not being able to stop Norton and not having access to a couple of files (see attached).

It is not really an update, but does more like changing config to enable new features.

Stop norton manual, and try again.

You could also go into services.msc and manual stop te services before running:
ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
and then turn services manual on.

Ok, just stop the services then.
Then try to manual rename the SoftwareDistribution folder to SoftwareDistribution_OLD inside the folder: c:\windows\
After that start the services again.

If that is not working, do you have a program installed that can see what is locking files in use: Like a program PowerToys File Locksmith

OK, stopped the services, renamed SoftwareDistribution folder to .old and restarted the services. A new SoftwareDistribution folder appeared without the .old extension. I ran File Locksmith but it didn't find anything. What's next?

A new SoftwareDistribution folder appeared without the .old extension
Thats good, it recreated an new folder with fresh settings, and no old cached updates.
Now hope that in the next few days the update won't apear.
If all is well, then delete the SoftwareDistribution.old folder.

I'm back to this again. Every Single Day!!!!! This is ridiculous!!!!! I found 2 registry entries regarding this update (see attached). Is there any dword I can change to STOP this madness??????
I bit the bullet and deleted the whole key 2068527244 which you found in the registry (exported it first). After 2 days no more KB5035942 updates and no errors or any adverse actions. Fixed!

OK, the blasted thing ran again this morning. Once I get going, I'm going to do Garrett's thing and delete the entire key. I'll get back once that's done and see if it runs again.

The *((*^%^^%())(*(** thing ran again this morning after following Garrett's advice and deleting 2068527244 from the registry. I have 'get the latest updates' turned off, I have updates paused until 2/22 and it still ran.

If you have updates paused, does Windows still 'look for updates', because it's still checking for updates.

Haven't seen that behaivor in the past. Does it also still update the defender defintions? as those are released every 4 hours.

Well anyway delete the SoftwareDistribution.old folder maps from c:\windows\ to clean it up. and c:\windows\system32\Catroot2.old folder.

I don't have Defender turned on as I use Norton 360. Deleted the two folders as requested. Also deleted the registry key 2068527244. Did a search and no KB5035942 is on my PC.

Also, it seems you're saying that since I have paused the updates, Windows should not automatically search for updates. Is that right?

I guess it is still checking then.. thats why i asked if you have defender, as definition updates are not considered i think as updates. However if your using Norton, i don't know why it would still check. Have actually also never looked into this, as we keep windows updates mostly untoched, and let it update whenever it wants. (except on my pc's at home, where i just disable it entirely, and update manaul every month)
