  • [Widgets Board] We are rolling out an update to the Widgets Board to improve security and the APIs for creating widgets and feeds for users in EEA regions. This non-security update includes quality improvements. Below is a summary of the key issues that this update addresses when you install this KB. If there are new features, it lists them as well. The bold text within the brackets indicates the item or area of the change we are documenting.
  • [FrameShutdownDelay] The browser ignores its value in the “HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main” registry key.
  • [Domain Name System (DNS)] A deadlock occurs in the domain controller (DC) when it starts up in the DNS client.
  • [OpenSSH] This update adds a prompt that asks you to confirm when you turn on OpenSSH using the Server Manager UI.
  • [Unified Write Filter (UWF) and Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM)] An SCCM task to re-enable UWF fails because of a deadlock in UWF. This stops the device from restarting when you expect it.
  • [vmswitches] They fail to enumerate using Get-VMSwitch command.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

Windows 11 servicing stack update (KB5042114) - 26100.1591​

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

While this update installed fine for me, I've now opted out of the Release Preview and the Windows Insider programme completely for now following issues with Star Wars: Outlaws and Avatar: Frontier of Pandora on Windows 11 24H2. Granted, those are the only two games affected by being on a release preview build but it is still annoying to discover that I cannot play a game properly that I paid for because it crashes every 10-20 minutes.

Hopefully, whatever it is with Windows 11 24H2 that is causing these crashes will be addressed before the official release otherwise more people are going to be experiencing this. Not sure if this is a specific problem with the games themselves (since both use the Snowdrop engine and have RT features that cannot be disabled) or with Windows 11 24H2 itself. Hopefully, it is the former because Microsoft don't have a very good track record in my opinion for fixing issues like this...

Anyway, I am going to be sticking with stable release builds of Windows going forward.

I recently reformatted my pc, and installed this build, some older games that used to work on my previous install of Windows which was not a clean install but updated over time to 24H2 never had issues. Same hardware, its odd. Another odd issue is the directX installer that many of these older games run during the install seems to have issues installing, even manually running the dxsetup program will not work. Wasn't expecting a clean install to have more issues than and upgraded version. On the plus side the OS is very snappy.

Nope, most of these older games don't use any real copy protection other than Steam. Even tired the GOG versions with similar results.

DirectX is now part of the Windows install process - you don't have to install it separately on 24H2,

Who knows? It is said that MS are targeting a September/October release date. More likely to be October than September, I'd expect. There's nothing to suggest they won't meet their target. I doubt it will be released before the next Patch Tuesday update on 10th September, so I expect there to be at least one more update before release.

No. You should be able to Leave the Insider Release Preview channel and still get the public release updates, those are the Patch Tuesday updates and the non-security Preview updates like this one.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).
