UPDATE 10/8:

 Microsoft Support:

September 30, 2024 - KB5043178 (OS Build 26100.1882) Preview

For information about Windows update terminology, see the article about the types of Windows updates and the monthly quality update types.

Note Follow @WindowsUpdate to find out when new content is published to the Windows release health dashboard.

Important: Windows 11, version 24H2 targets Copilot+ PCs and devices that previously used Windows Insider 24H2 builds.

Highlights

Note: Below is a summary of the key issues that this update addresses when you install this KB. If there are new features, it lists them as well. The bold text within the brackets indicates the item or area of the change we are documenting.

Gradual rollout

These might not be available to all users because they will roll out gradually.
  • [Settings] New! There is a new energy recommendation to turn off high dynamic range (HDR). This helps to conserve energy on devices that have HDR displays. Go to Settings > Power & battery > Energy recommendations.

  • [Battery life] New! When your device's battery power is running low, a pop-up window will appear that asks you to plug in your device. This occurs when the battery level reaches 20% and while Energy Saver is set to “Always On”.

  • [Start menu] New! The "Sign out" option is now on the account manager when you open the Start menu. To change to a different user, select the ellipses (...). A list of other users appears to make it easier to switch.

  • [Taskbar] New! You can now share local files directly from the search results that appear in the Search box on the taskbar.

  • [Lock screen] New! Media controls now show in the lower part of the lock screen at its center when media is playing.

  • [Mouse] New! This update adds the option to turn off enhanced mouse pointer precision to Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Mouse. There is also a new option to change the direction in which the mouse scrolls.

Normal rollout

  • [Copilot Pro subscription] New! You can now manage your Copilot Pro subscription in Settings. Sign in to your Microsoft account and go to Settings>Accounts.
  • [Screen readers] The NonVisual Desktop Access (NVDA) app and other screen readers fail to narrate all the screen content from some apps. This occurs when those apps run with administrator privileges.

Improvements

This non-security update includes quality improvements. Below is a summary of the key issues that this update addresses when you install this KB. If there are new features, it lists them as well. The bold text within the brackets indicates the item or area of the change we are documenting.
  • [Open Source Software] This update adds attributions to credits.txt files for Rust OSS components.
  • [Input Method Editor (IME)] When a combo box has input focus, a memory leak might occur when you close that window.
  • [WebView2 apps] They do not detect input from Xbox 360 and Bluetooth controllers.
  • [Task Manager]
    • Its Settings page might have a white background when it should not.
    • It stops responding when you switch from a high contrast theme to a normal theme.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

Windows 11 servicing stack update (KB5043117) - 26100.1881

How to get this update

Before you install this update

Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system with the latest cumulative update (LCU). For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates and Servicing Stack Updates (SSU): Frequently Asked Questions.

Install this update

To install this update, use one of the following Windows and Microsoft release channels.

AvailableNext Step
Yes (Windows Update)Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. In the Optional updates available area, you will find the link to download and install the update.
Yes (MSU)Before you install this update
To get the standalone package(s) for this update, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website. This KB contains one or more MSU files that must be installed in order.

Install this update
Method 1: Install all MSU files together

Download all MSU files for KB5043178 from Microsoft Update Catalog and place them in the same folder (for example, C:/Packages). Use Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM.exe) to install the target update. DISM will use the folder specified in PackagePath to discover and install one or more prerequisite MSU files as needed.

Updating Windows PC
To apply this update to a running Windows PC, run the following command from an elevated Command Prompt:

DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:\packages\Windows11.0-KB5043178-x64.msu

Or, run the following command from an elevated Windows PowerShell prompt:

Add-WindowsPackage -Online -PackagePath "c:\packages\Windows11.0-KB5043178-x64.msu"

Updating Windows Installation media
To apply this update to Windows Installation media, see Update Windows installation media with Dynamic Update.

To add this update to a mounted image, run the following command from an elevated Command Prompt:

DISM /Image:mountdir /Add-Package /PackagePath:Windows11.0-KB5043178-x64.msu

Or, run the following command from an elevated Windows PowerShell prompt:

Add-WindowsPackage -Path "c:\offline" -PackagePath "Windows11.0-KB5043178-x64.msu" -PreventPending

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

File information

For a list of the files that are provided in this update, download the file information for cumulative update 5043178.

For a list of the files that are provided in the servicing stack update, download the file information for the SSU (KB5043117) - version 26100.1881.

It doesn't say anything about it being a preview build in the about tab of system in settings.

All it says is 26100.1882. That's it. The Experience Pack is listed as 1000.26100.23.0

A cumulative preview is what is released generally around the end of each month. You don’t have to install a cumulative preview as the contents of the preview officially get released on Patch Tuesday, the 2nd Tuesday of each month, you also usually get the security updates included on Patch Tuesday.

    …still on a horse.
A couple of observations:

1) Note from the screenshot below that the Setup Dynamic Update from yesterday is listed as a "Windows Insider Pre-Release". They released another Setup Dynamic Update today and it no longer is identified as a Pre-Release.

Image1.jpg

2) Noe also that we are officially in the new update scheme consisting of checkpoint updates and incremental updates (not sure if incremental is the correct term, but that is what I am using until I discover otherwise). You need only be concerned with this if you are manually applying updates or injecting these into Windows images. Otherwise, Windows Update will take care of this for you.

The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.

2 laptops plus tablet all updated to 24H2 .1742 (holding off from .1882 preview).

All updated 1st time using manual iso update.

All disk cleaned up to remove Windows old.

All Macrium Reflect isos/boot menu updated to reflect updated install.wim.

Did a test restore of Macrium Reflect - all worked fine. Had one minor Reflect glitch inasmuch it backed up 24H2 more slowly than 23H2 even after rebooting.

More by trial and error, I turned off VSS and the speed went up to what I expected. I turned VSS back on and all was still fine. No idea why this worked but hey "fortune favours the bold" LOL.

KB5043178 didn't work for me (via WU)... tried everything.
This is the first update to fail for me since May 2020 Win 10, and Oct 2021 Win 11.
Went back to 23H2 for now.

I did make a backup of 24H2 though, so I can play with it maybe.

Now that I've rolled back to 1742 WU is trying to push 1882 back on me.
I just upgraded a non-insider machine with MCT ISO 26100.1742, from 22631.4249 to 26100.1752.
It is offering KB5043178 as optional update, but I did not take it.
If I leave the "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available" Off,
it will not download automatically; I can decide if I want it or not. 😉
I'll wait for a fix of the outstanding bugs before I take any other update. 🤬

I just upgrade a non-insider machine with MCT ISO 26100.1742, from 22631.4249 to 26100.1752.
It is offering KB5043178 as optiona update, but I did not take it.
I'll wait for a fix of the outstanding bugs before I take any other update. 🤬

I installed KB5043178 with the sfc scan problems et all and it's running just fine. The problems don't seem to affect anything. Runs great.

I have several machines with KB5043178, they seem to function, but this SFC fiasco is still a bug they need to fix. 😂🤬🤷‍♂️

Runs clean with 26100.1742. 👌

You need to install the 24H2 update first. See here

Perhaps the easiest (although slow) way to do it is with the top option here

ps Welcome to Eleven Forum

what to do with sfc /scannow issues?
Don't run it until MS has fixed the bug.
You know, some people run Windows for years without ever running sfc /scannow!

I don't understand which file I need to install/download
isn't the update in those files I took previously?

you mean this Download Windows 11
I've already tried this (apart from installing with the ISO, but I would like to avoid it)
anything else?
If you are unable to run the in-place update, I suggest you start your own thread, because this thread relates to an update to 24h2, which is not appropriate if you have 23h2. You may get help from others who will be able to assist you further.
