All usersFollowing the installation of the October 2024 security update, some customers report that the OpenSSH (Open Secure Shell) service fails to start, preventing SSH connections. The service fails with no detailed logging, and manual intervention is required to run the sshd.exe process.

This issue is affecting both enterprise, IOT, and education customers, with a limited number of devices impacted. Microsoft is investigating whether consumer customers using Home or Pro editions of Windows are affected. 		Customers can temporarily resolve the issue by updating permissions (ACLs) on the affected directories. Follow these steps:
  1. Open PowerShell as an Administrator.
  2. Update the permissions for C:\ProgramData\ssh and C:\ProgramData\ssh\logs to allow full control for SYSTEM and the Administrators group, while allowing read access for Authenticated Users. You can restrict read access to specific users or groups by modifying the permissions string if needed.

    Use the following commands to update the permissions:
    $directoryPath = "C:\ProgramData\ssh" $acl = Get-Acl -Path $directoryPath $sddlString = "O:BAD:PAI(A;OICI;FA;;;SY)(A;OICI;FA;;;BA)(A;OICI;0x1200a9;;;AU)" $securityDescriptor = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.RawSecurityDescriptor $sddlString $acl.SetSecurityDescriptorSddlForm($securityDescriptor.GetSddlForm("All")) Set-Acl -Path $directoryPath -AclObject $acl

Microsoft is actively investigating the issue and will provide a resolution in an upcoming Windows update. Further communications will be provided when a resolution or additional workarounds are available.

Install this update
Method 1: Install all MSU files together
Download all MSU files for KB5044384 from Microsoft Update Catalog and place them in the same folder (for example, C:/Packages). Use Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM.exe) to install the target update. DISM will use the folder specified in PackagePath to discover and install one or more prerequisite MSU files as needed.

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

Use the official MS ISO 26100.1742 and then update.
Your WebExperience pack is a much higher version than what I had on clean install of 26100.1742. They may have a specific bug on that version.
I cannot reproduce your problem with the version I have. 😎🤷‍♂️

It is a script, which works using the PC.

Many times uudump failed to create ISO on my PC, because of damaged DISM.
Using uudump ISO created by someone else might be fine, but I always choose ISO.

I did a clean install with the MS ISO 26100.1742 and windows came up with the update already at 26100.2033.
At that point the Widgets version was lower but the 1st update from MS Store got the same version that you have.
Seems to work fine at this point with Build 26100.2033. I'll update next to 26100.2161 and see what happens. 😎🤷‍♂️

Looks like I cannot reproduce your problem even with a clean install and the same version of Widgets (Web Experience pack)
Light mode or Dark mode. Still fine after getting up to 26100.2161. 😂🤷‍♂️
Same version as yours. I used the official Microsoft 24H2 MCT ISO 26100.1742 to do the initial clean install.
During the clean install it was updated already to 26100.2033. Then Windows Web Experience was updated from the MS Store. and went up to the same version that you have.
After that Windows Update downloaded and installed the optional preview update to 26100.2161.
No other changes to Web Experience pack that was already up to 524.24900.130.0. 🤷‍♂️

Perhaps the installation ISOs that you are using from a third-party have some other bug that cause your problem.
Sorry, I cannot reproduce your issue. Everything works fine for me here. 🤞

Totally agree with you - too many people blame MS only doing superficial troubleshooting at best.

I solved it by reinstalling the same version but from AppxBundle file
But the problem that appeared is that I cannot log in with a Microsoft account through it,
but that does not matter as long as it works in the rest of the programs.
Note: Some old versions work well and without login problems, especially version number 423.5500.

In fact, I do not know where the problem lies, as it only appeared in this build 26100.2161 or the update to it.
I was previously on build 26100.2033 and I updated successively until I reached build 26100.2152 without any problem.
After downloading 26100.2161, I Fresh installed Windows from iso and the problem appeared.

There is way too much people not willing to learn and understand how things work, then blame the system and say "just format it, that's Windows"...

I'm from a time where having to format your Windows was only if you really didn't had any other option, we ran from having to do it like it was the devil 😄

The only difference is the ISO you used for the clean install. 😎🤷‍♂️
Or perhaps you did not check for updates in MS Store?
I can sign in fine with the same exact version of Widgets and Build 26100.2161.

That's the meme of pre-10, even more so with NT5 and earlier, usually had to wipe and reinstall.

Since 10, I avoid that, when I can.

I only do clean installs for testing purposes.
All my Windows 11 working systems are upgraded from previous Windows 7 and Windows 10.
I hate reinstalling all programs and Apps after a clean install, I avoid that as long as I can. 🤐😉🤷‍♂️

I did another clean install offline with 26100.1742 and I saw this showing up only the 1st time I tried to open widgets.
Then it opened fine the second time, and I never saw that again regardless of anything I tried for reproducing it. 🤣🤷‍♂️

It was not fun on the XP era when we decided to change hardware but REALLY didn't want to do a clean install and lose everything, it was something really sketchy and risky to do 😅

But I learned a lot, I carry some habits from that era to this day - like doing a full critical / drivers' removal via Device Manager on Safe Mode before changing the MB / CPU, even tho since W10 SysPrep became waay smarter.

Same here, if I want to test something, I plug in some old SSD and do the install.

Main system last clean install was original W7, since then all official upgrades, 2 full system MB/CPU changes, plus 3 OS migrations when I wanted to upgrade the primary driver.

Back then, ironically, you were more likely to be forced to reinstall with any corruption, despite the Draconian WPA policies of back then!
I swore those were the dark days of WPA! If Windows XP wasn't corrupted at all, then good for y'all.
Also, the dark days of Windows getting hacked when just connecting to the internet with dial-up! (if you forgot to install a third-party firewall)

It was too easy to get hacked back in 2003! :ffs:
