All usersFollowing the installation of the October 2024 security update, some customers report that the OpenSSH (Open Secure Shell) service fails to start, preventing SSH connections. The service fails with no detailed logging, and manual intervention is required to run the sshd.exe process.

This issue is affecting both enterprise, IOT, and education customers, with a limited number of devices impacted. Microsoft is investigating whether consumer customers using Home or Pro editions of Windows are affected. 		Customers can temporarily resolve the issue by updating permissions (ACLs) on the affected directories. Follow these steps:
  1. Open PowerShell as an Administrator.
  2. Update the permissions for C:\ProgramData\ssh and C:\ProgramData\ssh\logs to allow full control for SYSTEM and the Administrators group, while allowing read access for Authenticated Users. You can restrict read access to specific users or groups by modifying the permissions string if needed.

    Use the following commands to update the permissions:
    $directoryPath = "C:\ProgramData\ssh" $acl = Get-Acl -Path $directoryPath $sddlString = "O:BAD:PAI(A;OICI;FA;;;SY)(A;OICI;FA;;;BA)(A;OICI;0x1200a9;;;AU)" $securityDescriptor = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.RawSecurityDescriptor $sddlString $acl.SetSecurityDescriptorSddlForm($securityDescriptor.GetSddlForm("All")) Set-Acl -Path $directoryPath -AclObject $acl

Microsoft is actively investigating the issue and will provide a resolution in an upcoming Windows update. Further communications will be provided when a resolution or additional workarounds are available.

Method 1: Install all MSU files together

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

That link isn’t about pausing optional updates.
If you open it you’ll see my post on WAU Manager

It’s a replacement for Windows Update and nothing gets past it, Microsoft couldn’t update your build if it wanted to, not with all the tea in China, when using it.

And it was optional for me also.
I have seen people post about other optional updates that were also installed without prompt, so you’re not alone.

You probably had the "get the last updates as soon [...]" enabled, or bugged.

Or something else had an issue and triggered PARTS of the update (this KB as far as I understood has a normal rollout and gradual rollout parts, and SSU)

Maybe they pushed it for you, I have 3 machines with 24H2 non-insider, and last update showed up as optional. 😎🤷‍♂️
It installed automatically on the R.P. machines.
Where are you located?

These came down on Oct 24, because I accepted the download.
I wanted the update anyway because it fixed a couple of bugs, I had with previous build 26100.2033. 😉

I know two people who work at Microsoft. One I grew up with and he is a leading Program Manager for Australasia with Outlook & Cloud.
The other is a close friend who codes for Outlook.

Every time I ask them questions about the inner workings at Microsoft or why this or that, they both quote a line from their NDA to me. And they aren’t kidding.

Still not alone, others have posted about the same thing. If you use WAU manager, not only will it not install, it wont nag you.
I don’t update now, until I have read grievances from members in this forum.

There are 2 other options too on the MS site, but if you download the ISO directly (third option showing below) it may have an install.wim that is too big to save on a FAT32 media and you would have to split the install.wim into install.swm and install2.swm before it can be stored directly on a FAT32 media.

I did not have any of the problems you described after a clean install and the same version that was updated from the store.
The same version is installed on several machines at 26100.2161 without any issues. 🤷‍♂️
