All usersFollowing the installation of the October 2024 security update, some customers report that the OpenSSH (Open Secure Shell) service fails to start, preventing SSH connections. The service fails with no detailed logging, and manual intervention is required to run the sshd.exe process.

This issue is affecting both enterprise, IOT, and education customers, with a limited number of devices impacted. Microsoft is investigating whether consumer customers using Home or Pro editions of Windows are affected. 		Customers can temporarily resolve the issue by updating permissions (ACLs) on the affected directories. Follow these steps:
  1. Open PowerShell as an Administrator.
  2. Update the permissions for C:\ProgramData\ssh and C:\ProgramData\ssh\logs to allow full control for SYSTEM and the Administrators group, while allowing read access for Authenticated Users. You can restrict read access to specific users or groups by modifying the permissions string if needed.

    Use the following commands to update the permissions:
    $directoryPath = "C:\ProgramData\ssh" $acl = Get-Acl -Path $directoryPath $sddlString = "O:BAD:PAI(A;OICI;FA;;;SY)(A;OICI;FA;;;BA)(A;OICI;0x1200a9;;;AU)" $securityDescriptor = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.RawSecurityDescriptor $sddlString $acl.SetSecurityDescriptorSddlForm($securityDescriptor.GetSddlForm("All")) Set-Acl -Path $directoryPath -AclObject $acl

Microsoft is actively investigating the issue and will provide a resolution in an upcoming Windows update. Further communications will be provided when a resolution or additional workarounds are available.

Method 1: Install all MSU files together
Download all MSU files for KB5044384 from Microsoft Update Catalog and place them in the same folder (for example, C:/Packages). If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

For me that task was failing with 6824 error even after running offline cleaning manually.
Did repair install with 2161 ISO and now it succeeds.

The offline command worked fine for me; it eliminated the 6824 problems on 5 different machines.
I did not need a repair install.
Typical MS insider testing inconsistency, different users and different results. 🤣🤣🤣🤷‍♂️

It is disabled now, probably ran when the upgrade to 24H2 was done on 10/19/2024. 🤷‍♂️

In this other machine it has a date 5/22/2024. This one was probably upgraded to 24H2 back in May. 😂😂🤷‍♂️
That is the exact date when this machine was upgraded to 24H2. 😉

You need to see if the raw values have an integer for bad blocks, media errors and the like.

Symptom of the SFC screenshot, is like an SSD I was using that is faulty. The SSD SMART, of the faulty SSD I was using, seemed to indicate bad blocks as well!

A bad SSD is likely, if it hardly has any writes and Windows seems to be having silent corruption syndrome.

I noticed something with the Task Manager Processes reporting bug. I opened Task manager and swore I saw the Apps and Background
processes numbers but only for a split second. So I started switching between Processes and Performance and sure enough the numbers
are there but only for a split second before they turn into zeros. Here's a still from a video I recorded.

I'll stand by my comments that I posted elsewhere on this forum. KB5044384 has been a nightmare for many people. Yes, I know that some people haven't suffered at all. Why some people suffer badly with this update and others don't is beyond me.

If you don't believe me, then why is this thread 22 pages and counting?

After this update, if I schedule chkdsk to run at the next reboot, it instantly ends and brings me to the login page.

It's 22 pages long because of so many people frothing about the sfc /scannow, disk cleanup and component store issues. None of these in any way prevent PCs with 24H2 functioning normally. Plus this version (2161) and the previous (2152) are both preview releases: current version is 2033. If you install preview software, don't expect it be bug-free, especially if you force-installed the software rather than waiting for WU to offer it to you.

I have 4 PCs on 24H2 in our household - 3 desktops and a laptop, and the desktops got 24H2 in May/June on Release Preview. The only issue is the FE 3 dots problem, which to me is a niggle not a stopper. Plus the changes to networking security required me to change a couple of things.

I had a prowl around the Feedback Hub app for 24H2 Cumulative Update (KB5044384) 26100.2161 to see what problems users are reporting. A vast majority of user submissions relating to KB5004384 are reporting problems with installing/upgrading to this CU. There are other issues reported but only a few.

As has been pointed out this CU is a preview version it hasn't currently been cleared for general release.

If anyone is having issues, they should consider submitting a report using the Feedback Hub. MS do read submissions.

I discover that when I run DISM /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase for the first time it cleans 100%
when I run it for the second time it flips back from 100% to 70% I think that's because everything has already been cleaned.
I always reset windows updates by deleting the SoftwareDistribution directory, after stopping windows update in services, the folder is then recreated after restart, which also solves many problems.

I also think we have to wait for the November 12th patch tuesday, this are all preview updates.

At the end of the day users have to make their own decisions whether or not to use beta/prerelease versions of operating systems and other software. This isn't meant to read like a backhanded remark aimed at anyone here, but prerelease versions of Windows aren't for everyone.

I'm happy to use the release preview versions of Windows 11 because for me they've been nearly 100% stable with no major issues over a long period. I do not use insider channel beta, dev or canary versions of Windows because they aren't always stable on my PC, and are often buggy.

The same applies to AMD Radeon software and drivers. I only install the official release versions and NEVER use the preview versions or those that AMD and MS try and force onto users via Windows Update. Why? because they're usually not stable with my GPU.

3 of my 4 PCs (2 desktops and the laptop) have just installed KB5044384 again via WU, even though all were already on 2161 level. After downloading I then got the message saying update successful. However no reboot requested and level remains 2161. I assume some correction has been made?
