All usersFollowing the installation of the October 2024 security update, some customers report that the OpenSSH (Open Secure Shell) service fails to start, preventing SSH connections. The service fails with no detailed logging, and manual intervention is required to run the sshd.exe process.

This issue is affecting both enterprise, IOT, and education customers, with a limited number of devices impacted. Microsoft is investigating whether consumer customers using Home or Pro editions of Windows are affected. 		Customers can temporarily resolve the issue by updating permissions (ACLs) on the affected directories. Follow these steps:
  1. Open PowerShell as an Administrator.
  2. Update the permissions for C:\ProgramData\ssh and C:\ProgramData\ssh\logs to allow full control for SYSTEM and the Administrators group, while allowing read access for Authenticated Users. You can restrict read access to specific users or groups by modifying the permissions string if needed.

    Use the following commands to update the permissions:

Microsoft is actively investigating the issue and will provide a resolution in an upcoming Windows update. Further communications will be provided when a resolution or additional workarounds are available.

Install this update
Method 1: Install all MSU files together
Download all MSU files for KB5044384 from Microsoft Update Catalog and place them in the same folder (for example, C:/Packages). Use Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM.exe) to install the target update. DISM will use the folder specified in PackagePath to discover and install one or more prerequisite MSU files as needed.

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

You are correct in that KB5044384 did fix some issues but introduced more. None were serious though, for me at least.

On balance I decided I preferred to live with the old issues rather than the new ones and successfully uninstalled KB5044384, then I turned off 'Get the latest updates....' so it wouldn't come back. Hopefully the next Patch Tuesday CU will be an improvement on this Preview CU.

I'm happy to use the release preview versions of Windows 11 because for me they've been nearly 100% stable with no major issues over a long period. I do not use insider channel beta, dev or canary versions of Windows because they aren't always stable on my PC, and are often buggy.

The same applies to AMD Radeon software and drivers. I only install the official release versions and NEVER use the preview versions or those that AMD and MS try and force onto users via Windows Update. Why? because they're usually not stable with my GPU.

Correct. These Preview releases are supposed to be 'production-quality updates', usually they are safe to install. This one may have fallen short of the mark though.... :wink:

Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Dev, Beta, and RP 24H2 as native boot vhdx.

when I run it for the second time it flips back from 100% to 70% I think that's because everything has already been cleaned.
I always reset windows updates by deleting the SoftwareDistribution directory, after stopping windows update in services, the folder is then recreated after restart, which also solves many problems.

I also think we have to wait for the November 12th patch tuesday, this are all preview updates.

No, there was no correction.
My update history shows installed on 10/24/2024 and that is the only time I got it. 😎🤷‍♂️

One should never assume that any new release of software as complex as Windows is going to be 'production quality'. That includes the general release builds. There is always going to some builds that slip through that have issues.

That is why having proper system image backups is critical.

Windows update history shows it having been installed on 21st and 29th October, and Reliability Monitor also confirms the update on the 24th.

Yes .2033 was pretty bad.
After updating to 26100.2161 on R.P. I installed the same update on all my non-insider public build machines, there are still a couple of problems that I reported with FBH, but 26100.2161 works much better than 26100.2033. 😉🤷‍♂️

If you have macrium in the boot windows, boot to macrium and use the MSDOS prompt in the interface and do chkdsk c: from there.

According to the MS Blog, KB5044384 was released on Oct 24, 2024.
You show one installed on Oct 21st. How did you get that?
Perhaps that was the same KB# to update to Build 26100.2152.
I got it just once on 5 different machines on Oct 24, 2024. 😉

They reuse the same KB# when they release the update to both Insider and Public and they bump up the Build #.
In this case:
From 26100.2152 to 26100.2161 in R.P.
From 26100.2033 to 26100.2161 for non-insider public build.
So, in the public build you see it just once, while in R.P. channel you see it twice. 😂😂
Nothing unusual, happens quite often. 🤷‍♂️


This first screenshot is what it shows on my Release Preview channel and the second one is on my public Build.
That is the typical behavior when they reuse the same KB # even if the updates are not really the same.

R.P. channel, same KB# twice one for 26100.2152 and the last one for 26100.2161

Could you show the exact command that you used?

I just tried this here and the behavior seems normal.

This showed when I restarted, it completed the chkdsk and then came up to the login screen. 😉🤷‍♂️

Just discovered why this happened. My ISP's router has a USB slot which allows you to attach a thumb drive to enable simple sharing. I have a 4GB one plugged into it. However it uses basic sharing with SMB1 which has been deprecated in 24H2 so I lost access to the drive. Activating SMB1 via adding the feature re-enables access. It requires a restart, and immediately afterwards Windows Update starts and downloads KB5044384 again. However nothing appears to be installed (or if there is it's dpne very quickly), as no reboot is required and it completes.

What I don't understand is that I've had 24H2 installed on the desktops using Insider Preview since May, yet this problem only arose when this update was applied.

Hello,
I just verified the same case you reported.
Looks like adding SMB1 causes the behavior you described. Here is downloading again the KB5044384 on the R.P. channel right after installing SMB1.
This machine was already at 26100.2161. 😂😂🤷‍♂️
Note that the update history shows KB5044384 installed today 10/30/2024, the one that was installed on 10/24/2024 is no longer in the history.
Perhaps they add back something that is needed for SMB1, and it is completed without the need for another restart. 🤷‍♂️
Anyway, I'll remove SMB1 because I don't need it. This was just a test to reproduce the behavior you describe. 😉
This unusual behavior seems easy to reproduce. 👌

You solved the puzzle. Easy to reproduce. Probably normal with this Build when adding or removing SMB1. 😵‍💫🤷‍♂️

This is also interesting, after these 2 reinstalls SFC failed again for the notorious BT files. Ran fine on second pass. 😂🤷‍♂️
