All usersFollowing the installation of the October 2024 security update, some customers report that the OpenSSH (Open Secure Shell) service fails to start, preventing SSH connections. The service fails with no detailed logging, and manual intervention is required to run the sshd.exe process.

This issue is affecting both enterprise, IOT, and education customers, with a limited number of devices impacted. Microsoft is investigating whether consumer customers using Home or Pro editions of Windows are affected. 		Customers can temporarily resolve the issue by updating permissions (ACLs) on the affected directories. Follow these steps:
  1. Open PowerShell as an Administrator.
  2. Update the permissions for C:\ProgramData\ssh and C:\ProgramData\ssh\logs to allow full control for SYSTEM and the Administrators group, while allowing read access for Authenticated Users. You can restrict read access to specific users or groups by modifying the permissions string if needed.

    Use the following commands to update the permissions:
    $directoryPath = "C:\ProgramData\ssh" $acl = Get-Acl -Path $directoryPath $sddlString = "O:BAD:PAI(A;OICI;FA;;;SY)(A;OICI;FA;;;BA)(A;OICI;0x1200a9;;;AU)" $securityDescriptor = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.RawSecurityDescriptor $sddlString $acl.SetSecurityDescriptorSddlForm($securityDescriptor.GetSddlForm("All")) Set-Acl -Path $directoryPath -AclObject $acl

Microsoft is actively investigating the issue and will provide a resolution in an upcoming Windows update. Further communications will be provided when a resolution or additional workarounds are available.

Install this update
Method 1: Install all MSU files together
Download all MSU files for KB5044384 from Microsoft Update Catalog and place them in the same folder (for example, C:/Packages). DISM will use the folder specified in PackagePath to discover and install one or more prerequisite MSU files as needed.

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

b) firewall software
c) drive encryption software


Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect or AOMEI Backupper Standard

Get the Windows 11 ISO (Option #2), and save it to your desktop...


Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will "look" like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you might lose is some of your personalizations.
Your drivers, programs and data will be intact.

One thing I noted is that I can see "Downloading" up to 10%, then it goes to "Installing".

Same problem here. It actually downloads to 100% and then jumps back to 8% and then switches to install. You have to be watching to see it.

I couldn't get round 800F801F the error with retry. Also tried to install the MSU from the download catalog but that just hung too. I've had to restore my C drive from a Macrium dump taken 5 days ago, and thankfully the update then went through. Fortunately no data problems for me restoring an old C drive backup as I keep any data on D drive.

I used the offline dism cleanup posted earlier by creating a cleanup.cmd file with text below, then booting into WinPE/RE Macrium Reflect (via boot entry), entered its C drive (bottom left hand corner C:> prompt)

Worked first time and cleared quite a few GB fron windows snxs folders.

I might use this rather than the online cleanup in future!

Could be.
An In-Place upgrade for example, has to be in the same language as the installed version of Windows.

I don't know if this carries over to include "region".

I have that OFF already, and I'm on build 26100.2033.

The problem with in-place upgrade is that it will replace my Windows.old that currently has 23H2.

I'm not sure I want to do that just yet considering a simple update is already failing.

I'll research about seeing my log with errors related to secondary languages, I'm not sure if when I updated from 23H2 to 24H2 via ISO in-place upgrade it somehow screwed up.

Rename the current windows.old folder to windows.oldd

If just right clicking and choosing "rename" does not work....
I'm sure someone in here, knows the command to do that.



I don't "have" a windows.old folder to test on. :cool:

I don't keep the windows.old folders, because I use 3rd party backup software.

No I don't, Thanks Buddy, It was mostly Hibernation was turned on and I removed that plus some Other Bloatware and now I am down to 47GB which is OK. :thumbsup: :thumbsup:

26100.2161...downloading now through Windows update...

No problems on install. I did note that sfc /scannow initially returned corrected errors, but after I used dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth, I ran scannow again, and it reported no problems. As well, no problems running my usual slate of productivity and game software.
