All usersFollowing the installation of the October 2024 security update, some customers report that the OpenSSH (Open Secure Shell) service fails to start, preventing SSH connections. The service fails with no detailed logging, and manual intervention is required to run the sshd.exe process.

This issue is affecting both enterprise, IOT, and education customers, with a limited number of devices impacted. Microsoft is investigating whether consumer customers using Home or Pro editions of Windows are affected. 		Customers can temporarily resolve the issue by updating permissions (ACLs) on the affected directories. Follow these steps:
  1. Open PowerShell as an Administrator.
  2. Update the permissions for C:\ProgramData\ssh and C:\ProgramData\ssh\logs to allow full control for SYSTEM and the Administrators group, while allowing read access for Authenticated Users. You can restrict read access to specific users or groups by modifying the permissions string if needed.

    Use the following commands to update the permissions:
    $directoryPath = "C:\ProgramData\ssh" $acl = Get-Acl -Path $directoryPath $sddlString = "O:BAD:PAI(A;OICI;FA;;;SY)(A;OICI;FA;;;BA)(A;OICI;0x1200a9;;;AU)" $securityDescriptor = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.RawSecurityDescriptor $sddlString $acl.SetSecurityDescriptorSddlForm($securityDescriptor.GetSddlForm("All")) Set-Acl -Path $directoryPath -AclObject $acl

Microsoft is actively investigating the issue and will provide a resolution in an upcoming Windows update. Further communications will be provided when a resolution or additional workarounds are available.

Install this update
Method 1: Install all MSU files together
Download all MSU files for KB5044384 from Microsoft Update Catalog and place them in the same folder (for example, C:/Packages). If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

I removed my secondary language and changed the region to United States, cleared everything with disk cleanup / sfc / dism, even ran the .bat from this forum to clear WU cache (it does run but I do have some Access Denied while it's ruinning)

The WU ran different, the download took more time, went to 100%, installation also took more time, got to 100% then

I would try the In-Place upgrade before you give up on 24H2.
If it doesn't help, you can always revert to 23H2.

A lot of folks use the In-Place to go from 23H2 to 24H2 for example.

But it can also be used to go from 24H2 to a "repaired" 24H2. ^^

I had a problem with this update. It screwed up a program that I use. So I did a Macrium backup to restore my c: drive. Now, Macrium will not boot the computer, saying I have no C drive. It will not let me boot, except to the K drive (my external CD drive that has the Macrium disk in it.) I have tried to edit the drive letters in Macrium, and it tells me there is no C drive. Any ideas?

Yes, that is part of the problem. It will not allow me to change the drive letter, saying C drive is not on the hard disk. When it restores drive C it relabels it as drive K. I cannot change the letter from within Macrium.

I think MS broke something fixing the Windows Update cleanup in storage.

Did you check afterward with:

Code: 
DISM /Image:C:\ /cleanup-image /AnalyzeComponentStore

Or once you were back in Windows input:

Code: 
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /AnalyzeComponentStore

I rebooted windows into WinRE (Hold Shift while selecting restart) and once in RE I selected command prompt then input:

Code: 
DISM /Image:C:\ /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

It succeeded so afterward I ran:

Code: 
DISM /Image:C:\ /cleanup-image /AnalyzeComponentStore

It still said this:
Number of Reclaimable Packages : 2
Component Store Cleanup Recommended : Yes

So then I ran this command:

Code: 
DISM /Image:C:\ /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup /resetbase

It succeeded so next I once again input:

Code: 
DISM /Image:C:\ /cleanup-image /AnalyzeComponentStore

Result was still:
Number of Reclaimable Packages : 2
Component Store Cleanup Recommended : Yes

I then rebooted back into Windows and Input:
Code: 
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /AnalyzeComponentStore

It still said:
Number of Reclaimable Packages : 2
Component Store Cleanup Recommended : Yes

Normally after cleaning up the Component Store if you analyze again it will say:
Number of Reclaimable Packages : 0
Component Store Cleanup Recommended : No

Removed the preview and Component Store cleaning works as expected.

I made a fresh backup after updating to 26100.2161
I just restored that backup, using the Macrium bootable media... and it worked.

I don't know how your drives are set up... but the one time Macrium couldn't do a restore (about 1.5 years ago)...
I ran Macrium's bootable media, and "deleted" all the partitions on my Windows drive, and then did the restore to the newly unallocated drive. That worked.


How far back (in time), was the Macrium backup made?

I had removed my Recovery partition long ago on Win 11. I noticed that the upgrade from 23H2 to 24H2, created a new Recovery partition.
That's why I asked... how far back was the backup you made?

Where Y is the Windows drive.

That was the error I was getting till I ran DISM with the resetbase flag.

Maybe you need to try the method in post #93. It's worked for some.

for some reason unknown to me, the C becomes K when it restores -- the other partitions containing Dev and Canary stay intact with correct drive letters.

When you upgraded to 24H2... did you use WU, or clean install or In-Place Upgrade?
