All usersFollowing the installation of the October 2024 security update, some customers report that the OpenSSH (Open Secure Shell) service fails to start, preventing SSH connections. The service fails with no detailed logging, and manual intervention is required to run the sshd.exe process.

This issue is affecting both enterprise, IOT, and education customers, with a limited number of devices impacted. Microsoft is investigating whether consumer customers using Home or Pro editions of Windows are affected. 		Customers can temporarily resolve the issue by updating permissions (ACLs) on the affected directories. Follow these steps:
  1. Open PowerShell as an Administrator.
  2. Update the permissions for C:\ProgramData\ssh and C:\ProgramData\ssh\logs to allow full control for SYSTEM and the Administrators group, while allowing read access for Authenticated Users. You can restrict read access to specific users or groups by modifying the permissions string if needed.

    Use the following commands to update the permissions:
    $directoryPath = "C:\ProgramData\ssh" $acl = Get-Acl -Path $directoryPath $sddlString = "O:BAD:PAI(A;OICI;FA;;;SY)(A;OICI;FA;;;BA)(A;OICI;0x1200a9;;;AU)" $securityDescriptor = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.RawSecurityDescriptor $sddlString $acl.SetSecurityDescriptorSddlForm($securityDescriptor.GetSddlForm("All")) Set-Acl -Path $directoryPath -AclObject $acl

Microsoft is actively investigating the issue and will provide a resolution in an upcoming Windows update. Further communications will be provided when a resolution or additional workarounds are available.

Install this update
Method 1: Install all MSU files together
Download all MSU files for KB5044384 from Microsoft Update Catalog and place them in the same folder (for example, C:/Packages). DISM will use the folder specified in PackagePath to discover and install one or more prerequisite MSU files as needed.

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

Sure there are some minor OS bugs to be smoothed out, but like you I have not found a single bug that prevents any of my main programs, email, surfing, videos etc. from working.

People have short memories (or were not there at start) forgetting all the issues for a couple of years with Windows 10 when it first came out, especially freezing and microlags. In the early days BSODs happened moderately frequently e.g one a month. By comparison, Windows 24 H2 is pretty rock solid - I cannot remember last time I had a BSOD with Win 11.

People have short memories (or were not there at start) forgetting all the issues for a couple of years with Windows 10 when it first came out, especially freezing and microlags. I've had very few issues directly related to 24H2 and I've been using it for a while now. Had some GPU issues, but that is AMD's software not MS doing. This is a significant update to Windows so there will be issues for some. Cannot think of a new version/upgrade to Windows going back 30 years that hasn't had initial bugs and issues.

Now that, I can agree with.
Yes, there are some very minor bugs. But I've had no major issues on any version of Windows 11.
No freezes, no BSODs... etc.

But that doesn't mean that I won't complain to the high heavens about the minor bugs... :D

If you are waiting for perfect software, it will never happen. Trust me, you are only seeing the surface. I have seen the Windows bug database and at any given time there are hundreds upon hundreds of bugs (not an exaggeration). Most are so minor that they get marked as "will not fix". The point is that there are way more bugs even in the best builds. You just happen to have noticed a couple that may be a little more obvious.

I'm not trying to say that you shouldn't wait if you encounter a bug that is bothersome, but just be aware that there will always be bugs hidden that you don't even know about.

SFC and DISM passed with flying colours, not even so much as the "CBS Bluetooth file bug" when sfc /scannow ran.

That only happens for a very few people.

Mine went "down" up until .2161

Now it goes up. I guess MS had to work extra hard to break that on "everyone's" device. :D

Well, if you redid it with the ResetBase flag... then it truly is broken. No real surprise there.


If you used that command... exactly, well it has an error.
There should be a space between Cleanup and /ResetBase.

Like this...

What I find amusing is the first build of 24H2 1742 which is still the iso build on Win 11 download page does not have any of the sfc, windows update cleanup 8.63 issue or dism issue.
Every build since 1742 Microsoft have fixed something then break something else.

I think it is a reporting bug as the size of the component store went from 14GB to 9GB after cleanup.

I do not know if this is an artifact of my Dell tablet that I have only had a few weeks with a clean install of 23H2 upggrade to 24H2 with the two cumulative updates but found over 200,000 files in the software\distribution folder!

The files only occupied around 5 GB but took ages to delete.

Still big... but not 5GB. :-)


I only have "one" OS on this drive.

I'm on Solus and waiting for weekly update. I only boot into Win 11 to update on patch Tuesday.

Actually I don't use my 3700X very much. It probably doesn't even know what a workload is... :D
