Lost Photo viewer/Editor

Since having a new hard disc installed on my Windows 10 laptop it now runs on Windows 11, and I have lost the photo viewer/editor that I must have set up as a default and used succesfully for several years. I cannot remember the details and despite searching on Google I have been unable to find or identify this programme which I would like to reinstall. I still have the old disc in a caddy - can anyone tell me how to find a list of the default programme settings on it?

The simplest solution would be to look through the 'Program Files' and 'Program Files (x86)' folders on the old disk and see if you recognise the name of your viewer/editor. Then you could Google for it and reinstall.

The hardest solution requires in-depth knowledge and confidence in using Regedit. You'd need to import the SOFTWARE hive from the old machine, then look in it's Classes for one of the image file types that had your viewer as the default, such as: Classes\.jpg\OpenWithProgids. If that sounds scary, then let's hope the first solution works for you.

In the mean time, you could either get used to using the Photos app as your default, or (my personal favourite) restore the old Windows Photo Viewer. This tutorial is for W10, but works equally well in W11.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Dev, Beta, and RP 24H2 as native boot vhdx.
