Solved Macrium, Imaging the C-Drive

my 31.9 GB thumb drive has not been able to complete the creation of a "bootable Windows 11 installation USB that supports UEFI mode" after 3 hours of chugging along...

Any suggestions anyone??
Download Microsofts Media Creation Tool. Use that. It will download Windows then create the install on your USB. Anything else, I am going to state, is too complicated for you. Then start from step 2 in the tutorial you posted above.

NO! Not at all. Everyone who opts for Microsoft365 Office or a Win11 install gets OneDrive, whether they want it or not.
That is correct, that is “Opting In”

EDIT; it isnt a secret, it tells you right off the bat what you’re paying for. OneDrive can be turned off, you’ve been told this repeatedly. Tell your friends?

If you are already using Media Creation Tool. Are you sure your USB is OK?
You have a couple of choices, stop the process (which in reality could finish at any minute) check your USB and make sure it’s OK
Or
Wait.

3 hours tells me something is wrong with the USB. Even on the slowest computer this would be extreme. Unless your internet connection is Dial-Up and you’re using MCT to download and create the install.

they were charged for OneDrive despite the fact they never asked for OneDrive in the first place.
Then she paid good money unnecessarily.

FACT: There are numerous threads and DETAILED tutorials in this forum (and all over the web) regarding unlinking the account and PC from Onedrive and moving files back to the computer's system drive OR any other drive the user chooses. The owner is not FORCED to pay for additional Onedrive storage if he/she takes the initiative to do away with Onedrive.
These tutorials cannot be made any simpler. All a user has to do it follow them.

FACT: If a person has more than 5 gb of files in Onedrive, that person has to do one of 2 things: move some or all his files off of Onedrive and back onto his computer OR pay up for the additional storage in Onedrive. That's just the way it is.
.
FACT: MS owns this operating system and can do whatever the heck they want to with it. A user only owns his license to use it. No user is forced to use it. There are other options. We can gripe about changes until the cows come home but it makes more sense to become involved and informed about how to deal with the changes MS makes.

FACT: Do I agree with MS defaulting Onedrive as the location where user files are stored. No I do not. But it is the user's responsibility to take the initiative and LEARN what to do if they do not want their files in Onedrive. It's not rocket science if one can read and follow steps.

You aren’t going to see any changes to the USB until MCT has completely downloaded then configured and installed Win11 onto it.

All I see is an image that says “Downloading Windows 11 3%” So the time waiting is your internet not your USB. Unless you can tell me that it hit 100% and it’s stuck at creating the install USB?
I don’t get it, all you have to do is run MCT, click the mouse a couple of times and it’s done for you. WTH?

I follow your threads mainly for the amusement factor and to see just how complicated you can make the simplest task. Even Americans aren't that stupid to realise that once you have opted to install an OS such as Windows that they also opt in to using the features of that OS such as OneDrive, Co-Pilot and the rest UNLESS you choose to uninstall or disable those features? Do you not bother to read anything when it is being installed?

As for your 'friend' getting charged for using OneDrive, this would only happen if they have gone over their allowance AND purchased additional storage whilst providing Microsoft with payment details!! Whilst some people believe OneDrive is Satan's spawn, I personally find it invaluable and have no qualms about paying £79.99.per year for 1TB of storage as well as Microsoft 365 which I share with my wife and family so we each have 1TB of storage which I can access on all my devices.

As for installing Windows, it's so simple even a child could do it, yet you strive to make the method the most contrived and over-complicated process I've ever seen! Use the MCT to either download and create a USB drive with just a few clicks or alternatively download the ISO and use Rufus to create an install USB!! It is so simple; I struggle to comprehend how you can screw it up so badly!!

The main issue is that despite all the advice and guidance you have been given, you steadfastly refuse to follow the advice and think you know better. You are effectively the architect of your own downfall and only have yourself to blame for the situation you find yourself in.

In no particular order:

1) 1708798994603.png This answers some questions. Large wind storms are probably responsible...

This is not likely to change. It's as much a global warming issue as anything. I can't determine where our isp decides to install transmitters or repeaters (...sigh!)...

When formatting the 32GB disk earlier, I was upset that the % completed had progressed to a point (say 65%)...and then when I checked it again...was at a point prior to its previous reading (say 22%). but given the connection problems...I agree I can't proceed successfully.

2) I won't bother to defend all those people who feel Microsoft is sc****** them over ("all over the Internet"), or to rant against predatory companies that, I'm sure, have fine-printed their interests.

MCT does that during the creation process. All you need to do is start MCT and click requirements until it starts downloading. But not at 0.96Mbps. However if you want it badly enough, waiting 3 days is worth it?

You’d be better off thinking of somewhere you may be able to go and get a better speed, or buy it on a USB. But that can be pricey. Do you have a local computer store you could enquire at?

I'm surprised anyone got back onto this thread. Now things are adding up. Years ago Backup Maker installed itself as a startup program and so greets me every time I turn on the computer. It is a minor annoyance, but certainly within the rights of Ascomp, that BM asks people using their software for free to re-register. More and more often, but few times enough to not be conspicuous (terribly stated!!) Backup Maker would not accept my 'registration', proffer an excuse polite enough to convince someone who wanted to be convinced (me!), that the company might be temporarily down, and reinforce that hope by, minutes later, accepting the registration. So that wasn't enough to convince me something was askew.
A couple days ago this flashed on the screen: 1708893994233.png. I checked and noticed, at the same time, this: 1708894078155.png. That was when I did the speed test. In hindsight (remember? 20/20?) there were probably many indications, short enough to go unnoticed, that speed was at the source of this problem.

You, ants, were the only person who happened upon the problem, in an offhanded remark.

I APOLOGIZE FOR NOTHING.
- I have never shied away from apologizing for mistakes I've made (even at times, explaining why those mistakes might have been maid). You are all very fortunate. You are able to operate in an environment where you can depend on a good connection with your isp. I have gone through the rotting cornucopia of isp connections (cable that left the county); satellite connections through which streaming was impossible, and now a normally (2018-2022) reliable line-of-sight wifi system that's attached to houses, trees, towers, the local schools (in other words, it's now engrained into the community strongly enough that they can call the shots)...
- I have NEVER BERATED and have always gone overboard to compliment those who have offered interesting, detailed, and helpful problem solutions.
- Though I have asked "Why? (should I image a disk that's plainly junk)" I have never blamed any person on this board for anything they have said in the spirit of trying to solve a problem. (And even I was amused when after someone answered the question and I took steps to image the drive (which I've not yet accomplished) that one of YOU, obviously at the end of his tether posted (paraphrased): "Why? (would YOU image a disk that's plainly junk!!)"
- I've certainly been insulted and a bit beat up for any number of reasons. I prefer to think it's because you care so much you're having a hard time coming up with anything new. But I know enough about people in the computer industry and have been in a position to deal with (programmers, etc al) that they can be very impatient with anyone who isn't quite as breathtakingly competent as they are (if not as inarticulate).
- As to my opinions... I understand there are people like some of you that are very happy with your MS365/OneDrive situation. I do not know what your directory/file/shortcut structure is and it is your business if you want your computer experience to be so completely synchronized that everywhere you go and everything you do is done through the same spectacle. But my life is more nuanced and I prefer the spectacle I get on each of my computers, and phone, be different.
And I very strongly suspect that few of you (few computer users, for that matter) have: a) thousands of browser shortcuts and hundreds of programs THAT THEY USE, to manage. b) detailed databases consisting of directories/files/and shortcuts (shortcuts are important because they, and OneDrive, don't seem to get along) c) understand computers or their phones well enough to know what syncing involves. (oh, did I mention that we have no Cell Towers here and all phone services must proceed through WiFi or the signals we can pick up 'five paces from the left hand corner of certain select parking lots or driveways'.)
But what you certainly don't seem to have is the common sense to realize that everyone doesn't know what you know and that (probably) most people have a life more important to them such that they expect their computers to work FOR THEM without INTRUDING ON THEM (even, and maybe especially, when they don't understand why all those wonderful gifts MS proports to be providing might not be as innocently in their interest as they were led to believe. I think the word is empathy. I (can think of many reasons but) don't understand why OneDrive has never been able to sync and only been able to totally mess up my computer environment and experience or why even when it's been removed from my computer I have to deal with the 'ghost of OneDrive' constantly.

- The reason I am on this forum is to accomplish something on my computers (after undoing the mess they've become).

Right now I'm waiting for my isp to get back to me after the weekend. I'm gearing up to pay another $240 for someone to one-time climb the tree (I can pay an extra $24/month but that will be a lifetime rate increase) and retune the antenna (used to cost $40 but then the county decided this needed to be done by someone who not only climbs trees, but has gone through certification on how to turn a screw on a dish). And I'm trying to arm my psyche to deal with the "Well from what we see here, and now, everything's fine" or just say "It's been nice doing business with you".

I'm also considering moving. I'm actually too old to do so and if we do would want to take, along with the BC and two cats, my table saw and tools I use. (One gets used to the house one designed and built.) I am able to get email, the internet (even though it occasionally reminds me I "don't have internet" only to provide Internet) We have an urban apartment--close to the hospital I need to visit too often. But our connection there is lucky to reach 2mbps and won't improve because that apartment happens to be at the "end of their phone line". And all our friends here just say..."Why do you need the Internet?"

Finally, though I don't want to do this, I'm wondering if Elon Musk's (expen$ive) satellite service is the service provider I need to use.

Jro, this is why your threads go astray. Nobody cares about all this other stuff, stick to the problem at hand. Trust me when I say we all want to see the back of your problems with reinstalling Windows, of which, without your internet problems and erratic threads, could of been accomplished a lot earlier.

If you have so many friends in the industry, why do you have these problems? Go to one of them, get them to make a Win11 install USB for you, fix your PC, be at peace.

Win10 & unfortunately OneDrive: Can't completely rid myself of this!!
I’ve successfully downloaded (based on a Hash/Checksum check) the file Win11_23H2_English_x64v2.iso—the Windows 11 (multi-edition ISO for x64 devices). In the time I’ve been away, I’ve been repeatably unable to use this file (using the approach I would prefer to take, i.e., using Rufus and following the instructions on: How to Set Up Windows 11 Without a Microsoft Account (howtogeek.com), and How to Install Windows 11 Without a Microsoft Account | Tom's Hardware (tomshardware.com) to install Win11 using a Local Account.)

Tomorrow:
  1. hope to use this file to install Win11 the way MS would prefer.
  2. Then, (immediately) after attempting to add/remove OneDrive and Microsoft 365 (which, coincidentally, I today wasted $99 renewing for a year) I hope to correct whatever problems I just opted into, by executing the exact same procedure without a Microsoft AccountIn other words, I’m hoping that whatever happened when I reinstall Win11 (the MS way), now might allow me, to reinstall Win11 “WITHOUT A MICROSOFT ACCOUNT.”
  3. Why? Because I’m convinced that something about the current state of my computer (a situation that has repeatedly prevented me from following directions and) installing Win11 without a Microsoft Account) might allow me to do so if, as a temporary measure, I install Win11 using the MS account.
  • Is any/everything I’m doing/thinking wrong?
  • Is there still (I’ve read so much about MS repeatedly taking measures to prevent bypassing a Win11 install without a Microsoft Account) a way I can Install Win11 “Without a Microsoft Account” possible?
