Miracast Fails New Laptop Old TV

All endeavours tried with Firewall off.
Tried adding the TV via > Control Panel > Devices & Printers > More Devices & Printer Settings > Add Device. 3 different items for the TV alone;
1 - Digital Media Renderer
2 - Entertainment Device
3 - TV itself (not pictured under Multimedia Devices)

When activating the WI-FI DIRECT menu on the TV. Then trying to add the TV device (after installing the other two) I finally see the menu on the tv to accept the incoming connection from the laptop. Despite accepting this request I get a notification on the laptop stating the TV quit waiting & to try again. Despite this the devices never manage to connect.




Miracast - Trying a different Transfer Connection Protocol (TCP [think I'm using the right terminology here]) via the old Control Panel menu – Casting Miracast after Windows + K = results in a failed connection as stated in the opening posts; username appears on TV; no option to accept the connection (acceptance seems default setting) only an option to decline the connection. Regardless the laptop states "Couldn't connect" & to try again.

Miracast - using the newer windows menu Bluetooth & Devices > Add A Device > Wireless Display or Dock no luck.

Regardless of the the TCP chosen; the TV appears intermittently as a possible device to connect to. None of which I am able to connect.

As bleak as it is I do feel a little progress has been made here.

Reiterating I am on the same WiFi frequency (relating to Miracast only I think here as WiFi Direct bypasses the WiFi network entirely) via Settings > Network & Internet > More Adapter Options...

It seems that the TV has a proprietary software for screen sharing. Did you install SmartShare app on your new PC?

The TV has "Screenshare – Miracast/ Intel WiDi" – though this should not really affect much. When using the other laptop the TV simply accepts the connection & software is ran implicitly (no notification to the user of the TV).



When using an Android I need to activate this proprietary software prior to making the connection.

I tried using the Smart Share app; was not at all impressed with it. Nor should it be required. The WiFi Direct should be independently between the laptop & the TV; either via Miracast or WiFi direct; two options. It should not require the use of an external app.

It's an older TV, so the connection protocol could be different and will require the app. For newer TVs, it could be different and will probably not require any app.

I would have thought backwards compatibility is usually used to maximise compatibility. I should be able to ascertain what versions are being used on the TV & change the WiFi adapter on the laptop port's/ protocol settings as per advanced settings in one of my other posts.



The LG SmartShare App does not even seem to have a Screen Share facility; it acts like a Media Server. It seems to be just for sharing files... Again LG themselves say it is not required for Screen Sharing.

Is your use case the typical play a movie on the TV or do you really need to mirror the whole PC screen? If the former, I would just get a Chromecast and plug it into an available HDMI port on the TV. I think you can also mirror the whole screen via a Chromecast using a bowser, but if that's the use case, I suppose Miracast would be best (if you can get it working). I'll try Miracast on my equipment and see if I can learn anything that will help.

Try connecting the TV to the WiFi before trying to Miracast again. I think the TV must be connected to the same WiFi as the laptop.

Thanks it is & always has been on the same WiFi network.

Need to mirror the entire PC screen & we have clarified I'm not interested in a hardwired connection.

You can also get an HDMI to Miracast dongle, connect it to an HDMI port and Miracast there, but the whole point is to make the TV work.

Well aware - but shouldn't have to & I'm not interested in getting up from the settee & damaging the physical ports...

Make sure the TV is connected to the WiFi and then open the Screen Staring app. Normally it should work at the Windows 8 or higher setting (Miracast), but you can also try the Windows 7 setting (WiDi) or the mobile device setting.

Miracast is very different than Chromecast. The former being like a wireless HDMI and the latter being a hand-off of a link to the smart TV or dongle. Chromecast may be completely useless to the OP or it may be a better experience, depending on the use case, which I don't think has been answered.

My TV show/movie playback solution is to plug a drive into my router (poor man's NAS) where I store the media files and then play them back on any smart TV (or TV with dongle) with VLC installed. My kids take a different approach. They have a spare PC connected directly to a TV via HDMI that they control with a wireless mouse and keyboard.

Anyhow, I was only suggesting an alternate approach in case the OP can't get Miracast to work and/or maybe hadn't considered other approaches. I'll shut it for now unless I come up with something specific for Miracast.

Thanks - Miracast/ WiFi Direct is desired in mirroring/ extending the entire screen. Not really interested in alternative protocols. Should be able to get this to work. Also going to client meetings I connect to a lot of different wireless displays so am bound to run across this with another device & want to be able to connect wirelessly to the display.

Screen sharing and Miracast have evolved. You may have a compatibility problem mixing old TVs with newer PCs. This is especially true with older TVs that may have an early version of Miracast or some other technology.

I can directly share the PC screen from my laptops (2018 & 2022) to my TVs (2019 & 2024) since they all support Miracast.

I have an old Samsung TV (2011) that I can't share a screen with because it doesn't support Miracast. However, I can do that indirectly using BluRay player (2015) connected to it. To use it I have to first launch a Screen Share app on the player. I can then use a laptop with Miracast to share its screen on the TV.

For older TVs without Miracast but that connect to WiFi and support DLNA, you can use an Android application such as AllCast or XCast to cast only photos and videos, not the whole screen. In Windows you have to set the network to private and enable Media Sharing. Then from TV you can access the PC and display photos and videos. Alternatively you can use Screentask on Windows to broadcast the desktop on a specific IP address and connect using the TV browser. This has very slow refresh rate, about 5-6 frames, so it is ideal for presentations or tutorials only. You cannot watch videos or play games. If however you want to use it with PowerPoint it is a perfect workaround to avoid a VGA or HDMI cable. Of course all these solutions work only when both the TV and the phone or PC are connected to the same WiFi.

As stated in post 25 it appears Miracast has not changed since 2017. I have WiFi Direct... indicating a latter version; so I think you are wrong.

Read the thread; countless times Miracast has been listed & WiFi direct as the protocol in question & required for connection as reasons previously stated.

I was just explaining how I managed to play videos on my old TV that didn't support Miracast, via DLNA.
