I am going to build a new machine to replace my aging out win7/win10 machine. This is what I am considering. I am not a gamer and that is why no monster GPU is spec'd. The most intensive graphics will be MS Flight Sim and stand alone War Thunder. The system drive will dedicated as I will be cannibalizing my SSD's out of my existing machine for apps/backup/storage. I'd like to get some feedback on this configuration. I've calculated cost at about $1300-$1500 depending upon supplier. Thanks in advance!!

CPU:
AMD - Ryzen 7 9700X Granite Ridge AM5 3.80GHz 8-Core

MB:
Gigabyte - B650 AORUS ELITE AX ICE AMD AM5 ATX MB

RAM:

GPU:
ASUS - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Dual V2 Dual-Fan 12GB GDDR6 PCIe 4.0

SYSTEM DRIVE:

Samsung - 990 EVO Plus 1TB Internal SSD

CASE:
Thermaltake - V100 ATX Mid-Tower

CASE COOLING:

It looks good. I'm not that familiar with the newer hardware so I can't rightly say much in the way of the system board, CPU, and memory you have chosen. I would agree with antspants that 1 fan is not adequate cooling for a case. You want to have both good intake and good exhaust with conventional air cooling.

I own too many laptops: A Dell touch screen with Windows 11 and 6 others (not counting the other four laptops I bought for this household.) Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.
It looks like that case has 1 fan in the back, exhausting. I would probably put 2 x 140mm in the front to help pull air into the case (intake) and see how things work out there. With the perforation at the top of the case, the hot air should naturally escape out the top from warm air rising and air pressure inside of the case.

Questions:

Is the G.Skill RAM you've selected on the supported list for the motherboard? (There are a number of Flare X5 series models, with different latencies.)

It may not matter, but if you wish to play it safe, get one of the models on the list.

The Thermaltake case is a fairly old design. The motherboard has a header for a USB 3.2 Gen2X2 Type C front panel connector. Do you care if you can't access that? (I admit that I have no idea whether an accessory that could use that is available for one of the 5.25" front drive bays.)

The Hyper 212 is an old design. It may be adequate. But something like a Thermalright Phantom Spirit (dual tower) may be quieter, and with better performance. It's not much more expensive.

For a non-gaming system, the RTX 3060 is a pretty good card. The 12GB version is the one to get, if only because its VRAM bus is 1.5X the width of the 8GB one. I don't know whether the forthcoming release of the RTX 5000 series will have any effect on the price or availability of the older cards.

The mb/cpu combo is actually a bundled offering from Microcenter. I just listed them out separately. I will look at the case and probably spec a different case that will support more cooling fans. Same with the CPU cooling. Anything else? This is exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for.

PS: I will check out their Powerspec line. I thought about that but wanted to configure my own machine first to make sure I got all the stuff I wanted. Have not looked at the Powerspec machines that closely.

The case is fine, it only sells with one fan, you need to purchase more

Looks good specs-wise except maybe get a better looking case just for kicks.
My next build will be using a 5Liter case (mini-ITX). Not necessarily flashy but tiny enough to make a conversation piece. :giggle:

What would be recommended? Do new machines really generate that much heat?

Go full gangbusters. Fill every spot. Back fan for exhaust, 3 front fans and the top for intake

Looks good specs-wise except maybe get a better looking case just for kicks.
My next build will be using a 5Liter case (mini-ITX). Not necessarily flashy but tiny enough to make a conversation piece. :giggle:

Yeah, I don't need a fancy case. Just a standard ATX enclosed case fine. Most of them have tempered glass and I don't need/want that. More interested in functionality than display.

Do you all think that 1 intake fan on the side and 1 rear exhaust fan would be enough. Front fans aren't my thing.

Don't think about your "thing". Just be proactive and get as much cooling you can get out of the case. By keeping components cool, you prevent thermal throttling, where the CPU or GPU automatically reduces performance to avoid overheating. Front fans are not for display.

Thermaltake makes a great case. They design for fans for a reason. It’s not what you’re into it is what works. But sure, it’s ultimately up to you. Even if you not being into front fans doesn’t make sense.

Just put a fan for exhaust at the back and 3 x 120mm or 2 x 140mm top fans for intake.

However, I recomend my original comment. Front and top for intake, rear for exhause.

No side. You have Top, Front, Rear.

You don’t need to spend a fortune on fans if you don’t want to, they don’t have to be fancy. Just get the fans with LED for where you want them and standard fans for everywhere else.

But as I said, fill every spot.

If you want to save money, put two LED’s at the top so they show when looking at the case, standard fans everywhere else.

Also, the front bottom fan seems to offer intake to cool the power supply section. Good idea.
