New Build - Seeking Feedback

No side. You have Top, Front, Rear.

You don’t need to spend a fortune on fans if you don’t want to, they don’t have to be fancy. Just get the fans with LED for where you want them and standard fans for everywhere else.

But as I said, fill every spot.

The case I spec'd is Thermaltake V100 ATX Perforated with a side vent.thermal.webp

Go full gangbusters. Fill every spot. Back fan for exhaust, 3 front fans and the top for intake
I don't think most people need that many fans. People go way overboard.
Yeah, I don't need a fancy case. Just a standard ATX enclosed case fine. Most of them have tempered glass and I don't need/want that. More interested in functionality than display.

Do you all think that 1 intake fan on the side and 1 rear exhaust fan would be enough. Front fans aren't my thing.
Front fans are great. Who cares what position they are in. As long as they work.

So as far as case cooling goes... 1 intake in front, 1 intake on the side, and 1 exhaust in the rear? I did up the PS to 850W. Config now runs at about 65% of PSU rating. Any other input? I think I am going to proceed with this build as config'd above (but with more fans and the 850W supply).

Thanks to all for your input!!

The V100 may be a nice case, but it's an old design.

If it was me, it'd drive me nuts that it lacks a connector for the USB 3.2 Gen2X2 header on the motherboard. There may be adapters to go in one of the front slots, I admit.

The Hyper 212 cooler is also a vintage design. Should be OK, but I might prefer a Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 Evo, which may be cheaper. I'd have to check RAM clearance, though.

Thermal paste gets more discussion than it merits. I've used Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut. The newer Noctua NT-H2 is supposed to require repasting less often, though.

In my case I wanted a filtered system so no dust can get in, and in order to accomplish that the case needs to be pressurized or else unfiltered air will be drawn in around ports, buttons, and any small opening in the case. Since I have a radiator at the top exhausting air out with 2 fans, then I need 3 fans blowing air in, otherwise there would be a vacuum on the inside. I wanted a glass door so I could inspect for dust without having to open the case.

My configuration was pretty much carved in stone because of the 2 CPU radiator fans.

If you want to model the same thing, then 2 radiator fans blowing out, and the other 3 blowing in.

Ensure you check the CPU fan will clear the VRM heatsinks which can be quite tall on some motherboards.

Not sure if one of these is applicable to AMD or not Amazon.com

Seems like keeping the cpu in contact with the heatsink is a bigger deal than which paste to use.

Hi Duane,

Glad to see you're sticking with AMD. On the memory front I would just make sure that it's specified as AMD EXPO compatible, otherwise you won't be able to run it at the full clock speeds. Please note that AMD EXPO will only work if you have just two of the four RAM slots filled - if you fill all four you can kiss AMD EXPO goodbye. For cooling you may want to consider the Noctua NH-U12A. It's not cheap, but it's the best. It is an asymmetrical 2-fan push/pull setup, and will not overhang your RAM modules, so you're not limited as to module height.

Good luck with the build!

Non sequitur: I have a Windows 95 VM set up *exactly* the way my long-departed Pentium 120 machine had been in 1995, complete with 1024 x 768 screen resolution, Doom, Encarta 95, Office 95 and Netscape Navigator. It tickles me pink. Have magnanimously decided to run with 512MB of RAM instead of the measly 32MB of the original. The little things in life do matter.

The RAM listed supports EXPO.

But the motherboard also is supposed to support XMP. (Which isn't standard for AMD systems.)

Noctua is a safe choice, if an expensive one.

Happy to report that the build is done and I am on the new machine! System is running stable. I though I had a power problem intially as I didn't hear any fans come on. Man, fans are quite nowadays! Just doing the inevitable tweaks and customization stuff.

Yes indeedy. They have come a long way with fans. Give us a picture of your build with the side panel off. You want a fairly fast exhaust fan at the back — especially if you're not venting through the top of your case. Intake is usually through the front and side. You want both good circulation and air flow out of the case. AMD - Ryzen 7 9700X Granite Ridge AM5 3.80GHz 8-Core is a high performer so it will get hot under load. The Thermaltake V100 is a good entry level case, but it's a bit like dropping a BOSS 302 engine into the family station wagon. Myself, I would have went for the Versa H21 for the extra front bay (but that's me). ThermalTake makes pretty decent cases. Glad to see it worked out for you! Looking forward to seeing some pix. :-)

I own too many laptops: A Dell touch screen with Windows 11 and 6 others (not counting the other four laptops I bought for this household.) Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.
Interesting. The enthusiast pastes I'm familiar with didn't test the best, as regards thermal conductivity. I'm not sure that's the appropriate criterion for the best paste. (A thin coating is wanted.)

Using the viscous ones may require caution. I forget which one I used that was more glue-like than I was accustomed to. Ripped the CPU right out of its socket when I was changing heatsinks. Didn't do nice things to the AMD CPU's pins.

Reminds me of the old days when thermal paste behaved like paste. It would crystalize and bond to the lid of the CPU. I still see that on some of the old desk top PCs that I revive but it's rare now. I'm not familiar with those brand names either. I'll either use Arctic Silver or MX2 , whatever's handy. I suppose I could be fussier but one or two degrees difference doesn't mean that much to me anymore.

I'm running 3 fans on the front, one in the back, & CPU. The top of the case is vented and the side is perforated. Doesn't seem to be generating any excess heat but I'm not running any heavy loads. Any suggestions for load test?

2-pass video conversion on avidemux set to highest quality. Will max every core and hold it there.

Since you're not using liquid cooling I would recommend putting some fans in the top of your case. Make sure the air is moving out through the top. Passive venting isn't as preferable when you're running an 8 core CPU. Since the case doesn't seem to draw a whole lot through the front you may wish to have an intake fan on the side panel.

If you do a video conversion, then only do a short video since the 1st pass doesn't stress the cpu as much as the 2nd, so you'll be waiting too long to get to the actual test. Also you'll need to keep the video software on the forefront or windows will consider it a background process and slow it down, so you can't have temp software or anything else on top of it.

But unlike a benchmark, video conversion is something you might actually do, so it makes more sense to tweak the pc around that activity.

I try to keep my cores right around 80 degrees max, so I had to tweak down from 5.7 to 5.5 ghz. When it gets too hot avidemux will announce a memory error and abort. If it's really bad then a blue screen will result.

On my system doing a video conversion is like turning on a 350 watt space heater. The hot air blowing out the top is just like a space heater.
